Angry Eggs and abuse hurled at Murali in Australia

Eggs and abuse hurled at Murali and officials

Members of the Sri Lankan camp in Australia for the CB series were the target of verbal abuse and had eggs thrown at them on Thursday night in Hobart. Muttiah Muralitharan and a team selector were part of a group walking from a restaurant to the team hotel and the selector was hit on the back by an egg. As a result, the Sri Lankan board has asked Cricket Australia (CA) to tighten security around the team.

"Muralitharan, along with one of the selectors and the team masseur, were walking on the street in Hobart when suddenly from nowhere a car passed them and the guy starts abusing," a source close to the team confirmed to Cricinfo. "He then came back a few more times and repeated this and suddenly he started throwing eggs in their direction. One landed on the back of the selector. The team management has lodged a protest with the cops but fortunately nothing untoward happened on the ground."

Reacting to the incident, Sri Lanka Cricket chairman Arjuna Ranatunga said the team should look ahead and focus on the CB Series, which kicks off with a match between Australia and India on Sunday. "I have spoken to Murali and team manager Shriyan Samararatne and they told me that they are not upset by what had happened. I have asked for a full report on the incident from the manager," Ranatunga said. "Samararatne told me that he was not sure whether the team members were the target. I told him that the team should not lose focus on what they have come to achieve in Australia - to win the tri-series."

Muralitharan's presence is bound to complicate matters. The spinner, who is the world's leading Test wicket-taker, has had a difficult time in Australia in the past. His action was no-balled early in his career in 1995-96, since when crowds have often heckled him at various venues. The reaction was so hostile Muralitharan refused to tour Australia in 2004, but he returned for Sri Lanka's series last November when the heckling seemed to have eased off.

K Mathivanan, the SLC secretary, said the board had informed CA about the matter and had asked for security for the team to be enhanced. "We have drawn the attention of Cricket Australia to this incident yesterday," Mathivanan told PTI. "They have already given the team security. But we have asked the authorities whether this can be beefed up further."

Sri Lanka play their first match of the tri-series against India in Brisbane on Tuesday.

Why the question of India come? You are looking for Indian ghost everywhere. I am a proud Bangladeshi who is fighting Indian aggression (physical aka BSF, cultural AKA Indian Cable Channels) in Bangladesh.

LOL its funny how India has cropped up on this particular thread. That Murali incident leaving a bitter taste in some aussie mouths is it?
In fairness Indians ARE no angels themselves, but why have you bought that up? "because he is indian - nobody"

That is borderline racism. No indians are "nobodys". No humans are "nobodys"

What a complete and utter stupid thing to say

eggs being hurled at one is not a major insult really! last week had pancake day here. there is always much egg throwing in this part of the world. i was walking back from the library around ten in the evening carrying a huge rucksack that contained my laptop and a number of books. it was really heavy and naturally i was walking slowly. as i went past the woody a girl i knew shouted my name so i went over to speak to her and her friends. there were a number of people smoking outside of the pub. suddenly a car speeded past hurling something at the gathered people. of course, it managed to miss everyone but my rucksack! thats how i got covered in eggs.. since i didn't take it as a personal insult, the better cricketers should not either!

ICC has done a number of test on Murali in the past all of which he passed.
something about not bending the arm any more than 15*

However i dont know wether i can comfortably say that all of his balls are legal deliveries. when your bending your arm a certain amount theres no way in hell you can tell exactly how much your bending it.
In fact i think that some of his wickets have probably come from no-ball deliveries.

Take nothing away from him though, fantastic bowler, wouldnt go so far to call him a chucker.

ICC has. There is no need of repeating that.

As he is drinking, the Cyclops demands to know Odysseus’ name. The wily hero says that it is “Nobody” (outis in the Greek). When the giant passes out, the Greeks immediately seize their opportunity and grind the lance into the Cyclops’ single eye, blinding him. The monster screams with pain and cries for help, but when other Cyclops arrive outside and ask who is harming him, Polyphemus can only answer, “Nobody, … Nobody’s killing me now by fraud and not by force!” (9.454–55). The next morning, when Polyphemus, blind, lets his rams out in the morning, Odysseus and his men ride out with them, tucked under their bellies and using the animals as shields.
