Sundarban came from the sundari tree (a long leaves tree used to make houses).
gong (ganj, gonj or any other variation) means a river port (compare seaport). so any thing with the same -ganj will mean it is next to a river and the city was built because of the river port.

That has a history Kabir bhai. It means New Canal.

The ancient name of Noakhali was Bhulua. Once the agricultural activities of the north-eastern region of Bhulua were seriously affected by floodwater of the Dakatia River flowing from the Tripura hills. To save the situation a canal was excavated in 1660 running from the Dakatia through Ramganj, Sonaimudi and Chaumuhani to divert water flow to the junction of the rivers Meghna and Feni. After excavating this long canal, Bhulua was renamed "Noakhali" after "Noa" (new) and "khal" (canal) in 1668. Noakhali district was created in 1821. It originally consisted of two sub-divisions, Noakhali Sadar and Feni. In 1984, Noakhali was split into three districts, Noakhali, Feni and Lakshmipur.

Its not pronounced as "bag"-erhaat; rather "baagerhaat". Probably got modified from "baagherhaat" বাঘেরহাট - Tiger's Market!

Never been to Shundorbon, or for that matter never been to any of the southern part of Bangladesh. Considering polybags being banned in BD; I wouldn't bet on finding too many of those in Sundorbon

add "sagol-naiya", "vera-mara" and "Chapainawabganj" to that... what might be the root of such names? !!!

Man, that was an easy one and meaningful as well.
The king of vawal ( Vawal er Raja) had many elephants. Those elephants were kept in “Hati-shal” near Shahabag. Everyday “mahut (aka hatir rakhal)” used to make those elephants walk through “elephant road” via “hatir pool” to “hatir jhil” so that these elephants can drink water.
