Default Spinner Razzak suspended

Masud Parvez, from Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg, Dec 1 (bdnews24.com) – Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has been suspended from international cricket for illegal bowling action by the International Cricket Council, Bangladesh cricket team manager Shafiqul Haq Heera told bdnews24.com on Monday in South Africa.

"Razzak has been found guilty of bowling faults and cannot bowl in any form of cricket until his action is corrected," Heera told bdnews24.com correspondent Masud Parvez in the largest South African city.

Bangladesh Cricket Board's newly-elected director Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu told bdnews24.com coach Salahuddin Ahmed would work with Razzak to rectify his 'faulty' action.

The former national captain said they would apply for a reassessment of the bowling action once the spinner modifies his stance.

"At this point, I really don't know the details of the report. But I am confident that I will be able correct whatever faults I have," said a gloomy Razzak in Johannesburg while packing the bag to return home with the rest of the squad.

Razzak travelled to Canberra in November for an independent analysis of his bowling action after he was reported for a suspect bowling action by Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva during the second and final Test of the two Tests series against New Zealand at home in October.

The analysis report, revealed by the ICC on Monday, showed that the amount of elbow extension in Razzak's bowling action for both his stock delivery and the faster ball exceeded the 15 degree level of tolerance.

The elbow extension ranged from 22 to 28 degrees and averaged 25 degrees while his quicker ball showed results in the 22 to 28-degree range with an average of 24 degrees.

Lipu also said Razzak would not be eligible to bowl even in domestic cricket due to the degrees of his elbow bending, but could play as a batsman.

Umpires Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva reported that they had concerns over the 26-year-old spinner's faster ball and hence requested the ICC to review his action.

Razzak has taken seven wickets in five test matches and claimed 110 victims in 79 one-day internationals.

Razzak was assessed by Marc Portusa, a member of the ICC panel of human movement specialists, appointed in consultation with the BCB, at the Australian Institute of Sports on Nov. 17.

This is the second time Razzak has been reported for the same offence in his career. The first instance was during an Asia Cup match against Pakistan in Colombo in 2004 in what was only his second one-day international.

Can razzak challenge this decision? I really hope he gets to appeal this decision...

this is a horrible blow to our ODI team I don't think back-up spinners are ready for international cricket... and shakib will be overburdened. Enamul jnr needs to step up and the BCB needs to do everything possible to bring back rafique to the national fold.

That is ridiculous. Why the hell ca Murali keep bowling? Every one of his deliveries are chucks, not just the doosra. Can't he just not bowl the faster ball?

This really is unfair to Razzak. I don't mind as long as the likes of Murali is banned with him.

Razzak found to have suspect action
Cricinfo staff
December 1, 2008

According to a report Razzak's elbow extension ranged from 22 to 28 degrees and averaged 25 degree © Tigercricket.com
Abdur Razzak, the Bangladesh left-arm spinner, has been suspended from bowling in international cricket after independent analysis confirmed his action was suspect under current ICC regulations.
Razzak was initially reported for a suspect bowling action by umpires Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva after Bangladesh's home series against New Zealand. He subsequently went to Australia to be analysed by Marc Portus, a member of the ICC panel of human movement specialists at the Australian Institute of Sports, as per ICC recommendations.
Portus' analysis showed Razzak bent his arm more than the 15 degrees allowed by the ICC. Razzak retains the right to appeal against the report though he must send a written notification to the ICC within 14 days of receiving it.
According to Portus' report, Razzak's elbow extension ranged between 22 to 28 degrees, averaging 25 degrees; his quicker ball ranged from 22 to 28 degrees with an average of 24 degrees.
If his appeal fails, Razzak can apply for a reassessment once he modifies his action. According to ICC's rules and regulations he can play domestic cricket under supervision and with the consent of the Bangladesh board.
This is the second time Razzak has been reported for the same offence in his career. The first instance was during an Asia Cup match against Pakistan in Colombo in 2004 in what was only his second one-day international.

READ THAT, HIS ACTION IS WAY OVER 15 DEGREES, Murali and Shoaib have been tested to show their elbow doesnt bend by more than 15 degree.

Razzak has been shown to bowl over 25 degrees, how CAN HE challenge? That is a massive margin of error, his career is finished, i cannot see him remoddeling this action to within 15 degree.

Murali has been shown by the SAME test facilities to bowl within 15 degrees. Murali shows an optical illusion as clarified by the same test centre, but anyway he BOWLS with 15 degrees/ Razzak has been shown over 22-28 degrees.

lol in your dreams, he has been shown to bowl over the limit and your saying to take them to court WTF? You have to abide by regulations you cannot change them for one bowler who bowls over 10 degrees more than the minimum. It was already changed from 5degrees to 15 for Murali as he was chucking before this.

If murali can change so can Razzaq..he can modify his action, what makes you think he can't??
and why did the ICC ban him straight away?? did they ban shoaib or murali straight away?? murali and shoaib was given chance to modify their actions.
Same should be given to razzaq why the bloody double standards???

Same will happen. I am sure he can correct his action and get back provided he satisfies ICC's requirement. However not sure if he will still be as effective.

But good time to try out some of the bowlers in the pipeline. This could actually be a blessing in disguise. You never know by the time he corrects his action you might find a replacement bowler is even better.

Dude, Razzak has the right to appeal... even if the appeal fails then razzak will get some time to modify his actions and can take these tests again to show that his extension is below 15 degree.

Stop bashing murali, he has proved that his extension is below 15 degree on these tests. So leave him alone.

25 degree is a very high average... why didn't anyone say anything sooner? Was the tests perfect? I don't know if he'll be the same bowler after reducing the bend by 10-15 degrees (since 28 degrees was the highest). Razzak was worried about just the quicker ball..I guess this means he chucks the other balls too. Man, the guy was so good in ODIs. Oh well, guess naeem's gonna take his spot.

I am literally shocked after reading this and I am disturbed how people are just saying move on. How can it all end just like that? BCB should take immediate action, arrange a rehabilitation program with Kalpage and get him to meet Murali on how to deal with this situation.

ICC certainly has different standards for different people of different countries. The old rule of chucking was much more strict; but they made bowling flexible with the 15° rule.

I am sorry for Razzak; but I hate chuckers. I have seen many people, who are quite capable of bowling leagally; still they tend to bend their elbows. This was the second time for Razzak. Seems, he did not learn from the first incident.
