Default And he takes no prisoners

STEVE Waugh wasn't born to the MCG any more than the MCG was purpose-built for him. But they could have been made for each other.

While the outgoing Test captain doesn't rate it as his favourite Australian ground - Adelaide is, he says in a recent book devoted to the great cricket stadiums of the world - he does have an affinity for it that reaches well beyond the respect and even awe that it engenders in the average cricketer.

There is every reason to believe that this is all to do with the psychology of the man and the place.

Waugh is, famously, the most combative cricketer of his time, perhaps ever. He comes not merely to play the game but to fight the battle, and he takes no prisoners.
