প্রথম আলো:

তামিম ইকবাল: খুবই হতাশ হয়েছিলাম। বিশেষ করে, যখন শুনলাম নিউজিল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে দুটি টেস্ট ম্যাচও হবে না। হলে হয়তো বছরে এক হাজার টেস্ট রান হয়ে যেত। এটা আমার একটা লক্ষ্য বলতে পারেন। সেই সুযোগটা হারিয়ে কষ্ট পেয়েছি।
 মাঝখানে যত দিনই যাক, এখানে সেঞ্চুরি হলে তো টানা তিন টেস্টেই হবে। এটা মাথায় আছে?
তামিম: এত দিন আগের কথা...আমি তো ভুলেই গিয়েছিলাম। বাসার কে যেন মনে করিয়ে দিয়েছে। তবে আমি এমন কিছু অর্জনের চেয়ে পারফরম্যান্সটাকে� � বেশি গুরুত্ব দিই। এমন পারফরম্যান্স করতে চাই, যা টিমকে সাহায্য করে। তবে হ্যাঁ, টানা তিন টেস্টে সেঞ্চুরি করতে পারলে সেটি বড় অ্যাচিভমেন্টই হবে।
 ওল্ড ট্র্যাফোর্ড টেস্টের পর তো বড় দৈর্ঘ্যের ম্যাচই খেলেননি। প্রথম টেস্টের কথা বাদ দিলে এই টেস্টেই কি সবচেয়ে অপ্রস্তুত অবস্থায় নামছেন?
তামিম: এটা দুভাবে দেখা যায়। একটা হলো, তামিম ইকবাল লাস্ট টেস্ট খেলেছে ১৪ মাস আগে। মাঝখানে লংগার ভার্সন খেলেনি, এখানে এসে প্র্যাকটিস ম্যাচও না। এটা হবে নেগেটিভ চিন্তা। পজিটিভভাবে দেখলে তামিম আগের টেস্টেই সেঞ্চুরি করেছে। সবচেয়ে বড় কথা হলো, আমি টেস্টের মাইন্ডসেটটা পরিষ্কার মনে করতে পারি।
 টেস্টের যে মাইন্ডসেটটার কথা বললেন, ওয়ানডে বা টি-টোয়েন্টি থেকে সেটি কতটা ভিন্ন? সাধারণ ধারণা তো টেস্ট-ওয়ানডে-টি-টোয়েন্টি তিনটিতেই তামিম ইকবাল একইভাবে ব্যাটিং করেন...
তামিম: আমি যেভাবে দেখি তা হলো, ওয়ানডে ও টি-টোয়েন্টিতে খুব অ্যাগ্রেসিভ থাকব, কিছু রিস্কও নিতে হবে। টেস্টেও অ্যাগ্রেসিভ থাকব, তবে রিস্কটা একটু কম নিতে হবে। আমার কাছে সেট হওয়ার সংজ্ঞাটাও আলাদা। টেস্টে ১৫ ওভারে ১৫ করলে মনে হয় সেট না। ৪ ওভারে ৩০ রান দেখলেও মনে হয় আমি সেট। তবে আমি এখনো টেস্টে একটা পুরো দিন ব্যাটিং করতে পারিনি। এটা আমার একটা লক্ষ্য। তবে সবকিছুর পর সময়ের চেয়ে রান কত করলাম, এটাই আমার কাছে ইমপর্ট্যান্ট।
 নির্দিষ্ট করে এমন কিছু বলবেন, যা ওয়ানডে বা টি-টোয়েন্টিতে করেন, কিন্তু টেস্টে করেন না...
তামিম: ওডিআইতে আমি সব সময় থ্রি কোয়ার্টার লেংথের জন্য অপেক্ষা করি। থ্রি কোয়ার্টার পেলেই সোজা ওভার দ্য টপ মারি। টেস্টে এটা করি না। কাটের জন্য অপেক্ষা করি, পায়ের ওপর বলের জন্য। সোজা মারি শুধু ফুল বল পেলে। ওডিআইতে একটা-দুটা স্লিপ থাকে। অফ স্টাম্পের বাইরে ফ্ল্যাশ করা যায়। টেস্টে করা যায় না। তবে আমি এটাও ভাবি, ওয়ানডেতে যদি আমি অফ স্টাম্পের বাইরের বলে ফ্ল্যাশ করে চার মারতে পারি, তাহলে টেস্টে স্লিপে ক্যাচ যাবে কেন? অনেকের এটা হয়, এটা টেস্ট ম্যাচ, মারা যাবে না—এমন উনিশ-বিশ করতে করতে স্লিপে ক্যাচ দিয়ে দেয়।
 বিরতিটা আসার আগে ৬ টেস্টে আপনার ৩টি সেঞ্চুরি, ৯ টেস্টে ৪টি সেঞ্চুরি ও ৬টি ফিফটি—এটা নিশ্চয়ই নিজের সামর্থ্য সম্পর্কে আত্মবিশ্বাস দিয়েছে?
তামিম: আমি নিজেকে এমন ভাবতে না পারলে এটি হতো না। নিজেকে কিছু মনে করতে হবে। নিজেকে যদি ছোট মনে করেন, আপনি ভাববেন, বাবা রে বাবা, ব্রড-অ্যান্ডারসন বল করছে। নিজেকে কিছু মনে করলে ভাববেন, ও ব্রড, তাতে কী, আমি তামিম ইকবাল। শচীন টেন্ডুলকার নিজেকে টেন্ডুলকার মনে না করলে টেন্ডুলকার হতে পারত না।
 তার পরও তো কথা থাকে। নিজেকে একটা কিছু মনে করলেন, কিন্তু পারফরম্যান্সে সেটি প্রমাণ না করা পর্যন্ত তো আর বিশ্বাসটা আসে না...
তামিম: আমি যা বুঝি, ওই ১১ মাসে আমি অনেক বেটার ক্রিকেটার হয়েছি। রান করার চেয়েও বড় ব্যাপার, এই সময়ে আমি আমার খেলাটা বুঝতে পেরেছি। আমার ক্যারিয়ারের গ্রাফ দেখলে দেখবেন, প্রথম টেস্টে রান করার পর অনেক দিন আমি আর ফিফটিও করতে পারিনি। কারণ, ওই সময়টায় আমি কনফিউজড ছিলাম। ফাস্ট খেলব, না স্লো খেলব...বেশি বল ছাড়ি, ডিফেন্স করি। ওয়ানডেতে সাকসেস পাওয়ার পর জেমির (কোচ জেমি সিডন্স) সঙ্গে টেস্টের ব্যাটিং নিয়ে কথা বলি। ও আমাকে বলে, ওয়ানডেতে যেভাবে খেলো, সেভাবেই খেলো, শুধু একটু সাবধান থেকো। এর পর থেকেই আমি সাকসেস পেতে শুরু করি। এখন আমি অনেক আত্মবিশ্বাসী। সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, আমি নিজেই নিজের স্ট্যান্ডার্ডটা অনেক ওপরে নিয়ে গেছি। এখন আর ত্রিশ-চল্লিশে খুশি হই না। পুরো দুনিয়া যা-ই বলুক, আমার কাছে নিজেকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে পারাটাই বড় ব্যাপার।
 পুরো দুনিয়া তো বলবে, তামিম ইকবাল ইংল্যান্ডের এই বোলিংয়ের বিপক্ষে টানা দুই টেস্টে সেঞ্চুরি করেছে। জিম্বাবুয়ের এই বোলিং তো কোনো ব্যাপারই না...
তামিম: যেকোনো ব্যাটসম্যানকে আউট করতে একটা ভালো বল লাগে। সেটি শচীন টেন্ডুলকার হলেও। আমি কেমন খেলছি, এটাই ব্যাপার। আমি ঠিকমতো খেললে রান হবে। স্টুপিডের মতো কিছু করলে আউট হয়ে যাব। আমি যেভাবে খেলি, তাতে এটা মেনে নিয়েছি যে কখনো খুব দুর্দান্ত লাগবে, কখনো খুব কুৎসিত। আমি এটাকে পাত্তা দিই না। আমি এভাবে খেলেই রান করেছি। এভাবেই খেলব।
 তার পরও জিম্বাবুয়ের কোনো বোলার নিয়ে বাড়তি চিন্তা কি আছে?
তামিম: আমি বিশ্বের সেরা বোলারদের খেলেছি, এদের নিয়ে আমি চিন্তা করি না। ভালো বল হলে ভালো বল। খারাপ বল হলে দেখবেন সেটি কই যায়!
 সর্বশেষ টেস্ট খেলার মাইন্ডসেটটার কথা বলছিলেন। আবহাওয়াও তো একটু সাহায্য করছে তাতে। এখানেও তো প্রায় ইংলিশ কন্ডিশন...
তামিম: হ্যাঁ, একটা মিল তো আছেই। সকালেই ভাবছিলাম, ওখানেও ফুলহাতা পরে ব্যাটিং করেছিলাম। এখানেও তা-ই। ওখানে শীত ছিল, এখানেও শীত।

Very well said, this should shut him up for a while and let his bat do the talking to gain a bit of respect.

I read Taylor's response and that was all class. Note he didn't call TI ordinary. He referred to Big Mouth as a quality player whose performance was ordinary. Dishing it out but keeping to the high road. Respect.
