biman slowly getting right...the DC-10s will be gone by end of next year (2011).
looks like they will be using a fleet of 4 B777s, two of them -200ERs, other two are plain -200s. not bad. i have a feeling the 200s will be "leased to own" since they are already pretty old.
so by 2013 biman may have a feet that looks like this:
2 B777-200ER (on lease - should be for EU routes, London/Rome)
2 B777-200 (on lease, may be purchased at some point in future - should be for ME/SE Asia/Far East routes)
4 B777-300ER (owned - should be for New York JFK, Toronto/LAX???)

Doesn't make sense to me. Brother watering the top of a plant while its root is cut doesn't do any good. Biman is the most corrupted and unprofessional airline in the world. Unless you change it from the root, nothing will happen.

yes, but outsiders will just see the leaves of plant.
right now those leaves are DC-10s which are embarassing. now at least we will have some decent planes, even if its not the A380.
new planes will also make service better even if the front office is corrupt and skims money off the top, which eventually won't or shouldn't matter to the immediate customer who just wants to get from point A to point B on time.
newer planes will cut delays due to technical reasons and mechanical problems. not to mention be safer and add some improvement in in flight entertainment.
other problems notwithstanding, i'd still prefer to fly on Biman as long as their service isn't totally shitty. if the board is embezzling money, who cares, our entire nation is built on corruption, why should the flag carrier be any different?

mix...leased planes are old but not DC-10 old.
10 brand new planes are coming in from next year to 2020

according to this post...Biman has reapplied for resuming their New York JFK service via Manchester. wouldn't it make more sense to run it via LHR instead?
also apparently Biman wants to start a Dhaka-Sydney nonstop route...if no other South Asian carrier has jumped on it, this could be a prime market to take over.

^^ Sydney-Dhaka could be one of the most profitable route for Biman/Virgin.
Wish they had it few years earlier.

My last experience with them was horrible.
Lucky it was only for two hours.

I hate travelling with Biman, the food is horrible, the service is terrible... Frikkin delays every 2 seconds, and my dad pays £250 more for 1st class, and it's like I'm on easy jet...

In my opinion only reason people travel from LHR to ZYL using Biman is because flight to ZYL via DXB with Biman. And even if you do stop at Dhaka you dont have to wait long before you get connected flight to ZYL.
Problem is with your return flight. You would fly from ZYL the day before stop at Dhaka for you flight next morning which is not guaranteed. I am not going tell you about my last experience......
But now you dont have to travel via DAC. Flight now leaves very early morning from ZYL and flies to LHR via DXB. No more staying at the hotel. Only Biman provides that services 3 times a day. And if they continue this service InshAllah I will go to Bangladesh twice a year instead of once every 2 year.

all in all good words, praying to God Almighty it comes through, the reasons to hope despite Biman's track record of being unable to obtain new/modern aircraft are the following:
1) JP Morgan has "committed" to loaning the initial $280m for two B777-300s
2) above papers have already been "signed" with final papers to be signed in September
3) Biman engineers are already in Seattle's Boeing facility being trained on the new a/c
4) Biman will not immediately retire the DC-10s (will wait until 2013 when all four 777s arrive)
5) no word on exact configurations but each 777 will have 419 seats - which is the densest config i've ever seen on a 773. my guess is it will be something like C12, Y407 or something like that.
Also the anticipated DAC-MAN-JFK route is to be restarted using the new 777s, while retaining DAC-LHR-DAC service. Any ideas on why its not a DAC-LHR-JFK service?
Also DAC-SYD-DAC route is planned. That sounds good.

^^ DAC-SYD-DAC would be great for Biman.
Wish it was there few years earlier.
Back in the days when I had to travel that route regularly, only 3 airlines would offer the service,
SQ, TG and MH. It used to be unreasonably expensive, but I had little choice.

I flew Malaysian Airlines always. It was tad bit cheaper than Thai, Cathy and Singapore.

Its very sad to see Qantas going through such technical difficulties. Qantas has always been a brand name for safety traveling and was among top 3 airlines in the world. But ever since they have moved from their "in house" strategies to "outsourcing" strategies, things are getting messy for them.
I had a bad experience with Biman traveling from Dhaka to Jessore. It was my first and probably the last journey by Biman.
