Thumbs up BCB to reactivate the "HP" unit.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to reactivate the high performance (HP) unit and appoint a foreign coach to run the show again in an effort to bolster development of the players and also of those in the pipeline.

The decision came after BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal and other board high-ups had a meeting with the national team management yesterday at its Mirpur headquarters after the Tigers' 4-1 series victory over Zimbabwe.

Previously, this programme, especially under the guidance of Australian coach Richard McInnes, produced players like current national team captain Shakib Al Hasan and his deputy Mushfiqur Rahim and the programme got special attention when the teen-heavy national side stunned India in the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

But suddenly the game's governing body discontinued the programme, citing that it had been incorporated in the National Cricket Academy (NCA), a claim that raised many eyebrows.

"It was our main demand [to reactive the HP unit] when the officials welcomed the suggestions from the national team management during the meeting. Look at the current squad, almost all of the players came from this programme. The tough training at the unit helped us a lot to cope with the intensity of international cricket," said Shakib, who also attended the meeting.

"But we must ensure one thing that it is run in a proper way like we had earlier and not in a way the NCA is running from where we hardly got anything in the last two and a half years," he added.

The HP project was initiated by former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury with a goal to produce international standard players. The subsequent BNP-led government also took further steps to strengthen the project and reaped the benefits. But the departure of McInnes in 2005 brought a grinding halt to this programme, without anyone's notice.

"It was unanimously decided that the programme would be reactivated very soon. We will try to bring a coach from Australia for the HP programme within a very short time. Actually everybody could understand how important the programme was for us," said BCB's media committee chairman Jalal Yunus, who was also present in the meeting.

He also informed that the national team representatives requested the BCB president to consider reactivating the HP unit, which had been the backbone of international selections like the A Team, Under-19 and Age Groups etc., under the BCB with highly-skilled foreign and local coaches imparting comprehensive cricket and life-related training to the up and coming talent

*****************************

I say, its a good decision to reactivate the program. We are getting nothing from the Cricket Academy. I hope they hire a good coach like Mckiness for the program.

what are the basic differences between NCA and HP programs other than one had foreign coach and other has local coach. If this is the only difference why don't bring a foreign coach for the NCA!

the major difference seems to me that the NCA has achieved nothing whereas HP brought us some excellent additions

A good decision indeed. Hopefully HP would produce a bunch of new Ice Men in near future.

HP program got the first generation of young talents after we got the test status. Those players were some what professional from the very early age and got good training from the very beginning. These players very easily got into national team in place of the players who started playing in pre-test era. Though the current (age group, NCA) players are also getting good training and BCB is organising tours for them similar to HP program did but it will not be easy for them to replace current national players (both groups have proper training from very early age). I still do not understand the difference except of having a foreign coach.

I heard Mark Waugh is looking for a serious job as a coach. Bangladesh may go after him.
I would love to McInnes come back, but he is currently with the womens' national team and is unlikely to leave his job

HP program is like Cadet college and NCA is like just another Secondary school and college.
HP program's rules and regulations are very strict compare to NCA

So far so good. Looks like Lotus Kamal is hitting right the button.

We need kids mentally prepared to fight the war, and HP was doing that part very well.

The HP unit was an intensive training system that not only included 'Academy age' players but also the best U/19 players like Musfhiq, Tamim etc. as well as players like Talha Jubair who had received caps but still needed coaching and development.

It'll help us fine-tune the games of players like Mehrab etc. who are too old/too established for the academy but still need coaching and development. Since they abolished the HP system we've not had anything in place to develop players like that. It will also hopefully focus on the best Academy age players and U/19s players.

I might be wrong though.

Infact NCA should be the place for HP training; or else we will see the death of NCA. If NCA isn't producing players, we must try to make it efficient instead of an isolated make shift program.

Ya, I am kind of agree with it. Now NCA going to suffer or NCA may just conver to HP and result will be the same. They should be thinking to make NCA more efficient.

Anyway, as the decision is already taken, they should keep on eye that other sources of players does not suffer because of special concentration on HP. If it's done, then it will add value.

I second that.

So NCA is a failure? Also just look at the NCA coaching panels, there is no specialist coach in the academy rather they go for average coaches. Also academy's overseas and home performances against other academies has gone down. BCB should take academy seriously and this HP unit should consists only best of the bests.
