Unhappy Habits of Our Players

I heard in the match thread someone saying that Mashrafe, Shahadat, and couple of other players smoke cigarettes . My heart was broken upon hearing this as they are my idols.
Does anyone know if this is true or not because they shouldn't allow smokers to play cricket or any other sport?

Smoking cigarette isn't illegal. so why shouldn't they be allowed to play sports? its a personal choice, if he can smoke and still play up to his potential then who are we to say anything.

Maybe its impacts their performance. I think any sportsmen would preform a lot better if they didnt smoke

Well I saw Mash smoke with my own eyes :S but .... he doesn't do it in front of everyone. Like i was the first to walk in and he took a quick few puffs and chucked it away as soon as the younger fans started walking in... so....
It isn't illegal so, he can do it...and what if he smokes illegally =P that's non of our business?
Yes its bad for his health and I rather him not..I personally don't like the idea of smoking.

Its a personal decision; then again many smokers are stuck in the "smoking is cool" age.

Hmm didn't know that. But they do like to drink though. I agree it's their personal choice but I think when they are on tour with the team the management should put a ban on these activities.

yeah, except that he was a spinner. He had such natural talent at spinning the ball that he could have been unfit and still played.
But Mash is struggling to stay fit and lost his form yet he smokes. He is wasting his talent. Now I know why he is always out of breath after bowling a couple of overs

You are reading too much in to it. Every half-decent fast bowler is out of breath after couple of overs. Some are better at masking it than others.

As for mashrafee's fitness, it has nothing to do with his smoking and has everything to with his knee caps being nuked. Quoting:

"....three operations on his left knee, one on the right, many stress fractures of his back, shoulder problems and two torn ankle ligaments. He has spent agonising days in hospitals - injury after injury, operation after operation."

The fact that he still plays cricket, in itself is quite a miracle. Smoking is least of his problems, if a problem at all.

Smoking doesn't automatically cause decreased performance, you need to be a long-term, chronic smoker to have significant decrease in performance. There are a lot of casual social smokers out there - you don't know if masrafee is a casual smoker (most likely - or he would be taking smoke breaks during a game).

the kind of problem with lungs happen when one is a chain smoker. 3-4 cigs a week is not a problem.

I'm sure mash is not a chain smoker.

You'd be surprised that many "educated" people like Carl Sagan used to copiously take marijuana. Although I don't for a least bit promote the usage of harder drugs, but guys like Piccasso, Coleridge, Erdos, Nietzsche are to name a few who experimented with some real hardcore drugs.

This is the part of growing up bro where you get to discover many of your idols were homosexuals or drug addicts or polygamous, etcetera. Tolstoy was a compulsive gambler before he had his epiphany and became all spiritual and stuff.

I am sure Asifda was joking cuz as much creativity as marijuana brings into people it has long term debilitating effect that may result in serious psychological disorder like depression if not lethargy.

But, It's commendable that young members like you, Antora and others don't glorify the players consumption of tobacco. You guys will go far.
