If 40 people posted and stated how wrong I was then i would seriously think about my view points and what message i am conveying to the community through my post. I would think about how i perceive the world itself and worry about the clear disconnect between my view point and the online community comprised of various individuals from various backgrounds who seemingly all agree that i was way out of line.
I would be more concerned about the negativity my post generated than the hurt it caused because I would know that BC is usually a very friendly community and there are no other instances where 40 people are jumping against one person's opinion.

Then, perhaps you can explain why none of the MODs did anything to any of the ruder posts or locked the thread before 40 people joined in ?

there was nothing that was more rude than the opening post. The reaction to that opening post was completely justified and in a way necessary to demonstrate that the BC community in general is not sympathetic to ignorant, sexist, misogynistic views under the guise of "personal opinion".

My mother was promoted today from being an Associate Professor of the University of Dhaka, to being a Professor She teaches English Literature.
I am now in a dilemma over what to get her as a present....

For once Crisis's suggestion is better and unique than the nerdy one suggested by Rifat.
Please pass my congrats to your mom Navo.

Congrats to your mother Navo!! If she's a fan of Shaw, maybe get her some of his collections? Or maybe books like Les Miserables/Tess of the D'ubervilles/Anna Karenina or maybe an ipad full of apps on the world library or harvard library collections...

Key is to spend more time here (Forget Cricket) than on Bangladesh Cricket. Try not to watch more than an hour or so per day When BD is playing test matches. There's always going to be a highlights thread to get caught up on what you missed.
Who am I kidding? Even after a good night's sleep, just reading day 3 report is making me depressed!

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. I definitely prefer your ideas to the generic ones proposed by my relatives i.e Jamdani sari/'hirar tops'....
My mother doesn't like gadgets and doesn't wear flashy jewelry. I'm also not sure if she'd really need the 'classic' English Lit. books as she has most of them already and teaches them in her classes. Maybe a painting or a charitable donation in her name may be more appreciated...
@Poorfan, I wish I could spend some time with either of my parents! I hope to go visit them soon.

Congrats to your mom Navo !!! I graduated from Dhaka University and knew Manzurul Islam Sir and Serajul Islam Chowdhury sir from English dept. Went there to meet them quite a few times and who knows may be have met your mom as well .
You can buy her an Ipad maybe. I got one for my mom and she loves reading books on it.

sometimes generic ideas are best instead of trying to be too creative.
Even though she doesn't like flashy jewelry, i would still consider buying a nice and classy piece..
see the thing is she is a professor, everyone is gonna be looking at her for a good 1 hour, noticing EVERY SINGLE THING.
Some of the things that I notice when there is a female speaker in front of me.. Ring, what kind, how big.
clothes you can't wear too many times... but a nice jewelry you can. Unfortunately a ring (has to be a diamond ring) to your mother is inappropriate. Should come from your father... but an expensive watch, necklace (not gold, but classy maybe pearls) is what she deserves... classy gift for classy professional woman.
you simply can not buy professional women cheap gifts. Give less but give quality.
Ipad is not a bad idea either if she is into computers....and technologically saavyy.....
btw Gold churis look gorgeous on bangali women.

And you are a lawyer right? or not yet? You simply can't buy cheap gifts.... simply CAN NOT.... it's sometimes better not to give anything than giving a cheap gift. No matter who says otherwise, I strongly believe in this.
