Default The pre-WC January 2011 Siddons Poll

With each and every news item, our opinions about Siddons are getting more an dmore polarized. This has made me curious and I'd like to track Siddons's popularity here on BC by a sequence of polls I through the end of the WC. It'll be interesting to see how our opinion on Siddons changes with on-field happenings and off-field news.

Do look at Spitfire's October 2010 poll as a benchmark:

This will close in a week. The next one will be just before the big game.

Oh, also made this private so that people can vote in confidence and not be vilified as a flip-flopper.

You, don't - but I do. Doing an experiment. Consider this the beginning of the Gallup 2.0 - The Kazi Org.

I think Siddons has value as a test batting advisor but overall want him removed from head coaching job. So chalk me up as anti.

I think Siddons would be good as an accademy coach teaching pupils the basics or at best an assisstant coach of a national team helping cricketers on sepcific areas. As the head coach of a national team he sucks. He is a poor tactician and does not have the guts to do experiments.

I have always generally been pro Siddons (although I have had some moments of doubt) mainly due to the fact that he has a had a positive influence on Bangladesh's Test performance.
However I feel the jury is still out on his achievements in the limited overs version of the sport. The World Cup performance of the team will be the "acid test" for me to decide on his ODI achievements with the the team.
In particular I want to see if he has improved on the team's powerplay struggles. This has been a major flaw that Bangladesh has not been able overcome and has cost them, by losing games that were winnable at one point.
He has had plenty of time to work on this and would have had a say if he wanted to try new players in the number 6 and 7 batting positions, but he has chosen to stick with the same players that seem to struggle in this role. If these players fail and Bangladesh lose games because of them then it would be hard to maintain the support to Siddons.

I've pretty much always been on the fence with siddons even though in spitfires poll once I put that I was anti siddons. I think he's done a good job with the boys technique and seems to have a very good relationship with the boys. Especially in tests he's taught the boys to focus more on occupying the crease and try not to play loose shots. In ODIs also the team has been able to hold on to their wickets more often.

The biggest problem with siddons obviously is his strategies on PPs. 1st of all there shouldn't be any excuse on taking it in the 45th over. With wickets in hand and with your top order batsmen at the crease its better to just take it in 35th-40th overs. 45-50 overs is when you go for boundaries anyways. So why not just go for it before? Also players like riyad and naeem still just block despite batting at the end of the innings. Especially for them they have to steadily increase the RR. Its also not about hitting. They just need to take singles and occasionally hit boundaries. I just wish siddons paid more attention to this because it could really make our team a lot better.

This is no "yes/no" argument. While Siddons has done great to improve the team's batting skills and dedicated his everything to the team's well being (while undergoing treatment for cancer...or was it something else?), he has hurt the players' confidence in every occasion he could possibly do it.

I'm hoping he did all this to turn the players into real performers rather than "jhore boke" performer. If that's what he's aiming for, I guess it may work...but have to wait and see how well he does that.

I'm still "sitting on the fence".

We will kill WI and the minnows on our own condition. So, all credit goes to Siddons for developing such a wonderful spin attack. Going for the Pro-Siddons option.

after some thought...i voted for "sitting on the fence" because that most closely summarizes how i feel he's doing.

he's making us more competitive in the Test arena, but we are also performing at below or potential in ODIs. While his static batting lineup is fine for the grind of 5-day cricket, in ODIs we need a lot more dynamism based on oppositions, conditions, and form of players.

i just hope sakib will force mushy in at 4 and keep at ash at 6-8 regardless of what Sid might say.

Third options have no place in a Siddons poll. I demand a new, "proper" poll

Ditto. I was looking for neither but had to settle for "Sitting on the fence".

I think he's done an admirable job so far. The most important thing he's done is getting rid of the "one step in front, two steps back" quagmire we were in for quite a while. We (our batting at least) are continuously improving, and that's all I need in order to believe. Thats something I couldn't say for the longest time...

Yes, he's not the most well-rounded coach (he knows squat about bowling it appears), but those coaches aren't as common as you might think. Its hard to know more about bowling than lifelong professionals when you never were one yourself. And guess what? Most coaches were specialist batsmen in their playing days. Thats why we have Ian Pont after all. If we're to blame anyone for our lack of progress in the bowling department, blame Ramanayeke...

The one gripe I have about Siddons is his inability to take advantage of the Powerplays. We've lost multiple games because of that area alone, and I'm not sure he puts enough thought into it even now...

Recently seeing all these threads on "Rahim batting at 4, Ash at 6/7 down the order as a finisher", I started to think that he's finally got his head out of his hole. But after finding out about his "New Solution", I can only bang my head on the wall, next to ATMR, and say 'oh whyy!'

ANTI JS - Only a SUPER WC can change my mind.

I was the first person to vote in the poll. Anti-Siddons that is as always.

He is a good batting coach but sucks as head-coach.
