Dhaka 2nd worst city for living
Quote:
Dhaka 2nd worst city for living
Star Online Report
Dhaka has been identified as the second worst city to live for the second consecutive time, according to a survey of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) affiliated with the UK-based weekly Economist.
Zimbabwe's capital Harare scored the least, making it the worst city to live for the second consecutive year.
The listing was based on 30 factors across five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
The result of the survey titled “The Liveabililty Ranking and Overview, February 2011” was released on Monday.
Canadian city of Vancouver scored 98 points out of 100 to secure the top position as most liveable city in the world.
Melbourne has been voted as second most liveable city.
The survey factor were rated as accepted, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable in a system that "allows for direct comparison between locations," according to the report.

Kind of expected, especially with the lack of clean water, no road infrastructure, constant traffic jams and power issues.....
They really need to decentralize and reduce the burden on Dhaka...
BTW for those of us in Canada, we got 3 out of the top 5 (Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary).

I would still not compare Detroit with Dhaka. Lived in one and live 30 miles from another. Beside crime rate, nothing else compares.
BTW, do you/did you live in Detroit?

What number is Chittagong? Chittagong should be one of the highest!
And this report, survey I don't often understand or can not visualize or even find logic in it....Yes Dhaka can be and most often is a miserable city...but second to last???...where is Lagos? Port Au Prince, Luanda...I am not defending Dhaka out of some childish biased argument for the sake of nothing, Dhaka's problems is where I grew up...it's just that there are so so many worse cities than Dhaka! But I wish my city Dhaka well and I hope and I know in my heart someday Inshallah, it will again be that great city it was once in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Of all my friends living in dhanmondi, everybody got mugged at at least once, so there are plenty of horror stories about Dhaka as well. So beside crime rate, nothing in Detroit is comparable to Dhaka.

I think a total of 30 or so elements from air quality, price index vs income, supply of was/electricity/water, education and many more things. Detroit is worse in crime do doubt, but for the other 29 elements, I think it will beat Dhaka hands down.

I think the lack of any competent infrastructure really hurts the city.... I mean clean water, electricity are basics... Plus there is a lot of poverty which also doesn't help the numbers...
Personally I'd rather live in Dhaka than Detroit, but then again I am from BD, and others would say differently....

I'm so proud - I'm related to the top in both ends of the spectrum. Best city to live in, and worst city that I've lived in!

Life in Melbourne is boring (which came 2nd most live-able city). Only old people can enjoy their retirement life there. Rather Dhaka is one of the liveliest cities in the world. The city that never sleeps. Love live DHAKA !

Other than us Old Dhaka-Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara-Dhanmandi-Uttara folks, not including places like T&T Bosti in our areas, Dhaka sucks for most who live here. Most people living here, easily the overwhelming majority of the city's population, are forced to live here in order to make a bare-minimum living for themselves and their families. Life for most Dhakaites is far worse than anything we can imagine. Besides, the number 2 is quite appropriate for the most Dui-nombori city in the world.
That being said:
The current population is close to 20 million with 65-70% unemployment including endemic underemployment and not counting government/defense jobs. You'll have riots in any other city under these conditions but not here. Not because we're complacent, but because we're genuinely peaceful, patient, resilient, know how to make sacrifices for our families and accept the good.
Dhaka may one of the LEAST LIVABLE, but her people make her one of the MOST LOVABLE cities in the world, and that's the whole truth.
