Posted this somewhere else but here's a scenario:

SA is the only team who has set a QF birth. The other four are in jeopardy. How so? Check this math:
Eng beat WI heavy
BD beats SA
WI does a BD 2.0 on India (at this point, a must win for both if the above two results come to fruition)

Pts Table:
WI 8
SA 8
BD 8
Eng 7 (run rate)
Ind 7

Since SA is the only team that went though, I suggest they rest Dumini, AB, Steyn, Smith, and Peterson.

If we can beat RSA that would be a super power level confidence boost currently which is at a very strong level. That confidence can take you anywhere and the BC owner's sig may become true.

i am praying for NZ to beat Sl and Aus to beat pak..that way if we make it to the qf we can be sure of either facing Aus or Nz..i dont want to face SL in the qf coz that way we'll have to play in SL..and i dont want pak..our spin isnt good enough for them

I think we can handle SL, AUS at home. NZ we might even be favorites although their form is peaking right now.
but pakistan scares me...we haven't come close to beating them since the 99 cup.
If pak beats aus and sl beats nz,then group rankimg will be:
A1 PAK
A2 AUS/sl (run rate)
A3 AUS/sl (run rate)
A4 NZ

I want New Zealand !!!

So far we beat all three lands (Ireland, England and Netherland) and lost to non-land countries.

New Zealand is the only other land that we haven't played yet in this WC.

All the scenarios for us (assuming no ties or washouts):

1. WI beats ENG, we qualify. If not we HAVE TO beat SA to qualify.
2. If we qualify with 6 points we are B4
3a. If we qualify with 8 points we will be B3 if
3a1. WI beats IND or
3a2. WI loses both matches to ENG and IND
3b. We can still be B4 with 8 points if
3b1. WI defeats ENG and loses to IND

For group A (assuming no massive NRR swings):

1. If NZ beats SL
1a. AUS beats PAK : AUS A1, NZ A2, PAK A3, SL A4
1b. PAK beats AUS : NZ A1, PAK A2, AUS A3, SL A4
2. If SL beats NZ
2a. AUS beats PAK : AUS A1, SL A2, NZ A3, PAK A4
2b. PAK beats AUS : PAK A1, SL A2, AUS A3, NZ A4

based on that you can root how you wish.

Default A win would be a tremendous moral boost

Based on the above 'roadmap' Bangladesh would be the Cinderella team this World Cup if they stay true to grit and determination. Upcoming match against South Africa would be crucial in many ways.

Law of Transitivity does not apply in cricket or any sport for that matter. England beat South Africa. Bangladesh beat England. Ergo, Bangladesh beats South Africa. How fascinating a rub would this faulty train of thought would be otherwise! But reality is unfair. Logic goes through the window; emotion takes over.

Advantage: Bangladesh. For Bangladesh to beat South Africa on their own turf will not only mean they have slayed the top ranking team in their Group B, but also would mean that they are showing consistency after beating England. Remember it's not about having to beat any team. Because Bangladesh have surely accomplish that menial task. Having catapulted to the next level, what they have to prove is can they do so on consistent basis. And with numer of games compactified in a small frame of time for Bangladesh to beat South Africa would be a huge psychological boost.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2010/11 / Points table

Group A
Teams Mat Won Lost Tied N/R Pts Net RR For Against
Australia 5 4 0 0 1 9 +1.693 1005/168.5 852/200.0
New Zealand 5 4 1 0 0 8 +1.957 1104/191.3 891/234.0
Pakistan 5 4 1 0 0 8 +0.729 1134/234.1 979/238.0
Sri Lanka 5 3 1 0 1 7 +2.705 1071/168.4 729/200.0
Zimbabwe 5 1 4 0 0 2 -0.669 980/238.0 1042/217.4
Canada 6 1 5 0 0 2 -1.987 1054/295.3 1582/284.5
Kenya 5 0 5 0 0 0 -3.005 785/250.0 1058/172.1
Group B
Teams Mat Won Lost Tied N/R Pts Net RR For Against
South Africa 5 4 1 0 0 8 +1.606 1311/242.3 950/250.0
India 5 3 1 1 0 7 +0.768 1405/232.3 1317/249.4
West Indies 4 3 1 0 0 6 +2.206 886/162.2 627/192.5
Bangladesh 5 3 2 0 0 6 -0.765 939/240.2 992/212.2
England 5 2 2 1 0 5 +0.013 1357/248.4 1351/248.1
Ireland 5 1 4 0 0 2 -0.881 1086/249.1 1289/246.0
Netherlands 5 0 5 0 0 0 -2.386 876/250.0 1334/226.3
http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cric...ew=pointstable

It'd also highlight the fact that they are also on equal footing with the high canons of Group A, the first four racking in 7-9 points whereas in Group B it ranges from 6-8. If Bangladesh beats South Africa, then they would go on to have 8 points and even if India wins the next match getting 9 points, it would show that in terms of points and win/loss ratio Bangladesh is not far behind. And that is a crucial factor.

Because while the race ends of dilly-dallying and getting away with losses, beating South Africa and moving ahead to next stage, they cannot afford to do rest their guards....proverbially speaking of course. But, on the flip side to it, these are the facts they would be looking at:

  • Bangladesh has beaten England and South Africa two top ranked team in a very short amount of time.
  • Bangladesh will be playing two quarter matches at home.
  • Bangladesh now will only need to win 3 more matches only for the cup and they can focus their energy by isolating each match and taking them in piecemeal.
Thus, it should not be and will not be "just another match" even if West Indies knocks out England. Because the way the infant behaves now against the big dogs will be difference between a prodigious streak or....a naked one.

Thus mantra is one and simple: Bangladesh: #winning.

QF = 1 Match. Not 2.

BD need to win 2 more games to move to SF.

Even India is not safe yet. If WI beats them by big margin and England beat WI + BD beat SA then India will be eliminated. At this point only SA is through to QF from this group.

I stand corrected. In Cricinfo it states, "with two quarters to be played.." which I read as two quarterfinal matches.

Will edit it. Thanks.

Isn't it with points and not NRR? How exactly is India's spot threatened?

SA=8 points(assuming they will lose to BD)
BD=8
WI=currently on 6 points. One win against India will put them to 8 points
England=currently 5, win against WI will take them to 7 points
India=currently 7 points. They will remain same if lose against WI in last match.
NRR will then come to in effect to determine from India and England.
