Default Poll 3: Really?

Most of you do not want shomman jonok porajoy yet you want a higher ranking? Those two do go together.

You have no clue how ranking is done, do you?

Before the WC we were higher than WI in ranking. From ICC Website:
FEBRUARY 2011
Team Rating
8 Bangladesh 67
9 West Indies 66
Last Updated: Fri, Mar 25, 2011

Then we played both the same opponents in the WC: Lost to Ind, SA.
BD beat England, Ireland and Holland.
WI beat Banglandesh, Ireland and Holland.

BD should have remained in #8 because of the opponents ranking. But that wasn't the case. Current ranking shows from ICC website:

Rank Team Matches Points Ranking
8 West Indies 27 1831 68
9 Bangladesh 38 2573 68
by David Kendix Fri, Mar 25, 2011

The only major reason BD and WI switched places because of margin of loss. Now you like Shomman jonok porajoy? (if you did vote #8 is better than #9 or #1 dreamer in Poll 2.)

Another factor: Bangladesh lost to a lower ranked team (WI). WI didn't.

Bagher chokh - the formula for rating changes are clearly defined and is what has also been used in the one we implemented. The margin of loss DOES NOT factor in the computation - only the fact that it was a win, loss or tie. It matters little how you lose, for the rating calculation, if you lose then you're a loser. It's like you can't be almost pregnant.

Ranking is complicated.

If we win the first match against Aussie and lost the other 2 we will be on 70 points but if we win one of the 2nd or 3rd odi we will be on 69.

But I want to see big gap between us and the windies at least there is a chance I may see a game or two in England

ranking doesn't take in how u lose...look at the ranking predictor..it just takes in who wins and who loses and makes calculation

i look at all this, this way.

if we didnt crash down to 58 and 78, ppl wudnt complain abt bd's ranking. windies also won 3 matches, 6 points. sommanjonok har er sufole they went through. if we had sommanjonok hars, we might have gone through in run rate.

It is good to let Shakib off captaincy, it will relieve some pressure. He will be offered captaincy again in a few years when he will be more than ready, Bangladesh will voyage into a new horizon then

We weren't going to have a chance at NRR. The team was built to score 220-240 to begin with. There was also very little confidence to even thrash IRE or NED to secure a large margin of victory.

If we played for shommanjonok har, we would have had 2 points because then we could've simply dialed it in and lost to ire and eng

Ratings/Rankings have nothing to do with the margin of defeat.

In that case, wouldn't we have gained a lot more beating England? The Difference between BD-WI and the difference between BD-England is far less.

That was my understanding too. However, I can't understand how could WI overtake BD. WI even lost more games counting Pakistan loss.

Nothing else makes sense unless we think of margin of victory and defeat. Certainly head-to-head is not a factor.

Can anyone explain why BD had a drop of ranking?

7. What principles are the ratings based on?
The Reliance ODI Championship table is based on the following seven principles:
i. It is based on individual matches, not on series of matches. While the result of an ODI series will
remain important for the competing countries, the ratings treat each match as an entirely separate
event. Therefore every ODI will count (apart from No Results) and there is no need for a
stipulated minimum series length.
ii. All ODIs are treated equally. Although the ICC Cricket World Cup final will have more at stake
than any other match, every ODI is subject to the same formula for ratings purposes.
iii. No account is taken of venue. Whether a side wins an ODI at home, away or at a neutral venue
will not affect the ratings.
iv. No account is taken of margin of victory. The rating system records only whether a team has won,
drawn or tied each match.
v. More recent results have a greater impact than older matches. To ensure the ratings fairly reflect
current form, the weighting given to a particular match reduces as times passes.

Remember, the Poll 1 put a scenario on when we lose bunch of wickets (within first 10-12 overs) and almost hopeless situations.
