‘কক্ষে ঢুকেই পেছন থেকে হামলা চালায় ও। চুলের মুঠি ধরে দুই চোখে আঙুল ঢুকিয়ে দেয়। কামড়ে নাক-মুখ ক্ষত-বিক্ষত করে। রক্তে পুরো শরীর ভরে যায়। একপর্যায়ে মেঝেতে পিছলে পড়ি নিজের রক্তের ওপর। এরপর...জ্ঞান ফিরলে দেখি, হাসপাতালের বিছানায়।’

এই বর্ণনা একজন নারীর, একজন মায়ের, একজন স্ত্রীর। তিনি রুমানা মনজুর। দেশের সর্বোচ্চ বিদ্যাপীঠ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক। ৫ জুন রাজধানীর ধানমন্ডিতে বাবার বাড়িতে স্বামী হাসান সাইদের হাতে নির্মমভাবে নির্যাতিত হন তিনি। পারিবারিক এই নির্যাতনের খবর সভ্য সমাজকে চরমভাবে নাড়া দেয়।

গতকাল ল্যাবএইড হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন রুমানা সাংবাদিকদের মাধ্যমে তাঁর একমাত্র কন্যা আনুশাসহ পরিবারের নিরাপত্তার দাবি করেন। কারণ স্বামী হাসান সাইদ তাঁকে গুলি করে হত্যা অথবা গায়ে এসিড নিক্ষেপের হুমকি দিয়েছেন।

২০০১ সালে হাসান সাইদের সঙ্গে বিয়ে হয় রুমানার। তাঁদের একমাত্র কন্যার বয়স সাড়ে পাঁচ বছর। রুমানা জানান, বিয়ের পর থেকেই সাইদ তাঁকে নির্যাতন করে আসছিলেন। সন্তানের দিকে তাকিয়ে সব কষ্ট সয়ে গেছেন। সর্বশেষ উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য কানাডা যাওয়া নিয়ে মনোমালিন্য শুরু হয়। তারপর এই চরম নির্যাতন।

রুমানা বলেন, ‘গত ১০ বছর আমি অনেক কষ্ট করে সংসার করেছি। হাসাননের চোখের সমস্যা থাকায় সে হীনম্মন্যতায় ভুগত। সব সময় আমাকে মানসিক নির্যাতন করত। সন্তানের ভবিষ্যতের কথা ভেবে পরিবারের কাউকেও এসব বিষয় জানাতাম না।’

রুমানার বাবা অবসরপ্রাপ্ত সেনা কর্মকর্তা মনজুর হোসেন এ সময় কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়েন। তিনি বলেন, ‘আমার মেয়েটা খুব নম্র স্বভাবের। ১০ বছর ধরে সংসার করছে, আমাদের কখনো স্বামীর নির্যাতনের বিষয়ে কিছু বলেনি।’

মনজুর হোসেন বলেন, ‘সাইদ আমার মেয়ের দুই চোখ উপড়ে ফেলতে চেয়েছিল। ডাক্তার বলেছেন, মেয়ের বাঁ চোখ সম্পূর্ণ নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। ডান চোখে দেখতে পারবে কি না, তা-ও অনিশ্চিত।’ তিনি মেয়ের সুস্থতার জন্য সবার দোয়া কামনা করেন।

নির্যাতনের এ ঘটনায় রুমানার বাবা বাদী হয়ে ধানমন্ডি থানায় মামলা করেছেন। ঘটনার পর থেকে সাইদ পলাতক। সাইদ বাংলাদেশ প্রকৌশল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় (বুয়েট) থেকে পাস করা প্রকৌশলী। একসময় ব্যবসা করলেও তিনি এখন বেকার। থাকতেন শ্বশুরের বাসায়। সেখানেই চলত স্ত্রীর ওপর নির্যাতন। সাইদের মা-বাবা দুজনই যুক্তরাষ্ট্র-প্রবাসী।

এই নির্যাতনের প্রতিবাদে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শিক্ষক সমিতি আজ মঙ্গলবার অপরাজেয় বাংলার পাদদেশে মানববন্ধন ও প্রতিবাদ সমাবেশের আয়োজন করেছে।

“He pushed his fingers into my eyes,” a battered wife told newsmen yesterday how her sadistic husband made her suffer beyond belief, “And dragged me by my hair on the floor.”


Rumana Manjur was talking to the reporters at the city's LabAid Hospital for the first time since she was injured in the torture at her father's Dhanmondi residence on June 5.


Rumana, an assistant professor of Dhaka University, added the husband at one stage repeatedly gnawed her nose, face and throat. Now undergoing treatment at LabAid, she is set to leave for India in a day or two for better treatment. Her father Manjur Hossain told The Daily Star that they will leave the capital on completion of visa procedure.


Meanwhile, doctors have confirmed that Rumana's left eye has been completely damaged.
“Doctors are now trying to save the other eye,” said Manjur, a retired army officer.


Rumana, teacher of international relations department, was doing Master of Science (MS) in Colombia University, Canada, on Fulbright Scholarship, her father said.


Rumana claimed her husband Syeed Hasan Sumon frequently assaulted her during their 10-year conjugal life. He beat her up several times on her return from Canada on May 12.

The man was furious when she decided to continue her study in Canada. "But I tolerated all sorts of torture considering the future of my only daughter," she said. Before fleeing, Sumon had threatened Rumana with throwing acid or shooting her if she takes legal action, she said.

Sumon, a graduate from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), has been living at his father-in-law's house since Rumana got pregnant, said Zobaida Nasreen, a teacher of DU anthropology department and a friend of Rumana.

Sumon used to quarrel with his wife over trifles and at times beat her up, said another DU teacher preferring anonymity. But Rumana did not tell her parents about her torment as she married him without their consent. Sumon, former student of Faujdarhat Cadet College, has never engaged himself in any kind of job or business, the teacher added.


However, Rumana's family members have demanded quick arrest and exemplary punishment of Sumon who went into hiding after a case was filed against him with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 6. They alleged Sumon's cousin Kamal Uddin, a public prosecutor of Chittagong, is lobbying to protect the accused. Contacted over the phone, Kamal told The Daily Star he is not in good terms with Sumon although they are relatives.

Sub-Inspector Mokbul Hossain, investigation officer of the case, said police have raided the accused's Paribagh residence in the city and would continue the hunt.


Also yesterday, Dhaka University Teachers' Association condemned the brutal attack on Rumana.
In a press release, the association leaders expressed grave concern as the accused has not been arrested even in a week of the incident. They urged the university administration as well as the government to take steps ensuring the victim gets proper treatment.

The saddest part is, this happened in a very well educated, well off middle class family living in a affluent suburb of the capital. This is the group that are supposed to be the torch bearer of the moral, norms and value of our progressive society.

তাকে চেন্নাইয়ের একটি চক্ষু হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হবে বলে জানা দেলোয়ার।

সকাল ১২টায় ল্যাবএইড বিশেষায়িত হাসপাতাল থেকে রুমানাকে ছাড়পত্র দেওয়া হয় বলে জানান হাসপাতালটির মিডিয়া ম্যানেজার কামাল হোসাইন।

ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সহকারী অধ্যাপক রুমানা মনজুরকে নির্যাতনের ঘটনায় তাঁর স্বামী হাসান সাইদকে কেন গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়নি, তা জানতে চেয়েছেন হাইকোর্ট। আজ বুধবার বিচারপতি এ এইচ এম শামসুদ্দীন চৌধুরী ও বিচারপতি গোবিন্দ চন্দ্র ঠাকুরের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত হাইকোর্ট বেঞ্চ এ বিষয়ে রুল জারি করেছেন।

কাল বৃহস্পতিবার সকাল সাড়ে ১০টায় মামলার তদন্তকারী কর্মকর্তা, ধানমন্ডি থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা ও ধানমন্ডি সার্কেলের সহকারী কমিশনারকে আদালতে হাজির হয়ে এ বিষয়ে ব্যাখ্যা দিতে বলা হয়েছে। ‘উন্নত চিকিত্সার জন্য ভারতে রুমানা, সাইদের গ্রেপ্তার দাবি’—এ শিরোনামে দৈনিক প্রথম আলোতে আজ একটি প্রতিবেদনে প্রকাশিত হয়। এ ছাড়া আসামিরা গ্রেপ্তারের বাইরে এ-সংক্রান্ত প্রতিবেদন বিভিন্ন জাতীয় দৈনিকে প্রকাশিত হয়। বিষয়টি নজরে এলে আজ সকালে আদালত স্বতঃপ্রণোদিত হয়ে এই রুল জারি করেন।

গত ৫ জুন ধানমন্ডির বাসায় স্বামী হাসান সাইদের নির্যাতনের শিকার হন আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক রুমানা মনজুর। পরদিন তাঁর বাবা মনজুর হোসেন বাদী হয়ে ধানমন্ডি থানায় মামলা করেন। তবে এখন পর্যন্ত পুলিশ সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে পারেনি।

গুরুতর আহত রুমানা আট দিন রাজধানী ল্যাবএইড হাসপাতালে চিকিত্সাধীন ছিলেন। গতকাল মঙ্গলবার তাঁকে উন্নত চিকিত্সার জন্য ভারতে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়েছে। নির্যাতনে রুমানার বাঁ-চোখ নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে এবং ডান চোখের অবস্থাও আশঙ্কাজনক বলে এখানকার চিকিত্সকেরা জানিয়েছেন।

I saw this on the news and was so shocked. Can a person really do this? it disgusts me! But my thing is , She ( Rumana) is a teacher and well educated, if your husband is abusive then divorce. What's the point in keeping an abusive relationship? I understand that divorce is looked down upon in our culture, but really? No wife deserves to liver her life like that. A man who abuses his wife is no man at all.

I guess she couldn't think that the guy could be this much offensive and dangerous for her. What ever, that guy should get hanged in public or like bujheekom brother said "The scumbag should be burnt alive".

Dhaka, June 15 (bdnews24.com) — Detectives have arrested the husband of tortured Dhaka University teacher Romana Manjoor, nine days after the brutal incident.

Deputy commissioner of Detective Branch (south) Munirul Islam told bdnews24.com that Hassan Syed was arrested around 2:15pm on Wednesday from one of his relatives' residence at Mugdha in the city.

Romana Manjoor, assistant professor of the International Relations department, was severely assaulted allegedly by her husband on June 5 at her father's residence at Dhanmondi.

She was later admitted to LabAid Hospital.

Syed had been on the run since then.

Father of the victim Manjur Hossain, a retired army personnel, filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station the following day.

Earlier in the day, a High Court bench asked the government why the lone accused in the case was not arrested yet. It also ordered the investigation officer in the case, officer in-charge and Dhanmondi circle assistant commissioner to appear before it on Thursday.

Romana was taken to Chennai, India for better treatment on Tuesday afternoon after she was released from LabAid Specialised Hospital at noon.

On Tuesday, Dhaka University Teachers' Association gave the government a 24-hour ultimatum for the arrest of Hassan. Teachers and students of Romana's department also demonstrated protesting the incident.

বুধবার তাকে রাজধানীর মুগদা এলাকা থেকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয় বলে জানিয়েছেন মহানগর ডিবি দক্ষিণের উপ কমিশনার (ডিসি) মো. মনিরুল ইসলাম।
ডিবি সূত্রে জানা গেছে, হাসান সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তারের জন্য নগর গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের সিনিয়র সহকারী কমিশনার শহীদুল্লাহার নেতৃত্বে একটি দল চট্টগ্রামে এবং সহকারী কমিশনার আহাদের নেতৃত্বে আরেকটি দল রাজধানীর বিভিন্ন স্থানে অভিযান চালায়।
বুধবার বেলা সোয়া ২টার দিকে উত্তর মুগদার এক আত্মীয়ের বাসা থেকে ডিবির সহকারী কমিশনার আহাদের নেতৃত্বে সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। গ্রেপ্তারের পর জানা যায়, আজ সকালেই তিনি ওই আত্মীয়ের বাসায় উঠেছেন।


উপ কমিশনার (ডিসি) মো. মনিরুল ইসলাম আরও জানান, সাইদকে আজ বিকেল ৪টায় মিন্টো রোডের ডিবি কার্যালয়ে সাংবাদিকদের সামনে হাজির করা হবে।


এর আগে হাসান সাইদকে কেন গ্রেপ্তার করা হচ্ছে না, তার ব্যাখ্যা চেয়ে বুধবার সকাল সাড়ে ১০টায় রুল জারি করেন হাইকোর্ট।


রুলে ধানমণ্ডি সার্কেলের সহকারী কমিশনার (এসি), ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) এবং তদন্ত কর্মকর্তাকে তিন পুলিশ কর্মকর্তাকে বৃহস্পতিবার সকাল সাড়ে ১০টায় আদালতে হাজির হয়ে এ বিষয়ে ব্যাখ্যা দিতে নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়।
আদালতের রুল জারির প্রায় ৪ ঘণ্টার মধ্যেই তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করল ডিবি।


উল্লেখ্য, এমন একটি নৃশংস পৈশাচিক ঘটনার পরও সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তারের ব্যাপারে পুলিশের গা-ছাড়া ভাব লক্ষ্য করা যাচ্ছিল। এরপর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীরা মঙ্গলবার অপরাজেয় বাংলার পাদদেশে পৃথক কমসূচি থেকে ২৪ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তারের জন্য পুলিশকে সময় বেঁধে দেন। কিন্ত পুলিশের তরফ থেকে তৎপরতা দেখা যায়নি।


বুধবার দুপুর ১২টায় সে আলটিমেটামের সময় পেরিয়ে যায়। এদিকে বুধবার সকাল সাড়ে ১০টায় হাইকোর্ট সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তারের জন্য রুল জারি করার পর দুপুর ২টা মিনিটের মধ্যেই গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের একটি দল সাইদকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে সক্ষম হয়।



গত ৫ জুন ধানমণ্ডির বাসায় স্বামী হাসান সাইদের নির্যাতনের শিকার হন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক রুমানা মনজুর। তাকে ল্যাবএইড হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসা দেওয়া হচ্ছে। উন্নত চিকিৎসার জন্য মঙ্গলবার তাকে ভারতের চেন্নাইয়ে নেওয়া হয়েছে।


ঘটনার পরদিন রুমানার বাবা মঞ্জুর হোসেন ধানমণ্ডি থানায় হাসান সাইদকে আসামি করে মামলা করেন। ঘটনার পর থেকে সাইদ পলাতক ছিলেন।।

BTW I don't think the report was fair to the police. how could they see activity of police? like all the police should run all the time and that would show they are very active? Cannot comprehend this. Worse than any other assaults I've heard of. Can't even think of what pain she went through. No comments on this a**hole. There's no way justice can be served in this case - although, making him go through the same $hit, and completing the process with pure lynching will probably help ease the pain.
