Default Bangladesh would have to play a qualification tournament for 2015 World Cup

The ICC Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) meeting began the ICC Annual Conference week in Hong Kong and concluded today.

The key recommendation it has made to the ICC Executive Board is that there should be a qualification process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but did not make a recommendation to the ICC Executive Board on the number of teams that should compete in the event to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

The ICC Executive Board meets tomorrow and Wednesday, when they will announce if they have accepted and agreed the recommendation, and what format any qualification system will take.

There is still a strong desire amongst the top ranked Full Members to have a ten team tournament, so the most likely scenario is that Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will be put into a tournament with the top six ranked Associate sides.

There will probably be a parachute for the two countries in that their participation money will be guaranteed from the 2015 event, even if they fail to make it through to the final stages.

One further concession which is thought to being negotiated is the venue for any qualification event. Scotland was originally down to host the qualifying competition in 2013, but Bangladesh and Zimbawe will resist strongly having to play in conditions which don't traditionally suit them.

They would rather host the event, or at least have it in the UAE, where ICC are based.

It promises to be an eventful few days in Hong Kong, with the future of Associates and Affiliates cricket very much at stake.

The ICC Chief Executives' Committee has revived the World Cup hopes of the Associate nations by recommending a qualification process for the 2015 tournament, though it has not specified the format or the number of teams that would take part in the event.

The recommendation backtracks on the ICC's earlier decision to limit the tournament to only the 10 Full-Member teams, thereby excluding the Associates without giving them a chance. That announcement, made immediately after the final of the 2011 edition, met with widespread criticism, forcing the ICC to revisit the decision during the ongoing Hong Kong summit.

"The CEC recommended that there should be a qualification process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but did not make a recommendation to the ICC Executive Board on the number of teams that should compete in the event to be held in Australia and New Zealand," the ICC statement read.

The details of the tournament will be worked out when the full council meets on Thursday.

What if we rise above the West Indies in the rankings before the cut-off date?

Very likely that WI could fall in the tables below us, and it may take longer but NZ could fall as well. With all the series we play against ZIM, we gain easy points and in a few years time that will take us above NZ if all they do is lose outside of the world cup.

I welcome a qualifying tournament if we have not gone up in the rankings. We _SHOULD_ beat the likes of Ireland & Scotlant on an extended tourney. Quit the belly aching peeps. BTW I also believe that if Law maintains Jamie's trajectory, this will be a moot point in 2 years time.

I am surprised at the capitulation of our leadership to BCCI's pressure and ICC's whims. I wonder if some money changed hand! Not only we do not play test on Indian soil but also we play a lot fewer ODIs. These too happened even without a whimper from BCB honchos attending the meeting. If BCCI is going to backstab us then we have no reason to endure the pain in the privacy of the boardroom. We should scream load and clear for the rest to hear. It's shame that we have become a lackey of the BCCI. I smell something rotten here.

but the question is, West Indies and heck even England should go through qualifiers too. They had the same winning % as us in the WC. We will leave out other ODIs because they are yet to take place.......

This is injustice but yea, if Allah is with us, we will be in the top 8 soon..
question guys, can we be at the top 8 by beating Zim in all 5 matches??

Now is the time to improve our domestic cricket. BCB should take it to another level and show the whole world how much we love cricket.

India accepts 'UDRS'
Minnows to have their shot at WC
Afp, Hong Kong

India agreed Monday to a modified version of the controversial Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), bringing to an end a damaging row which threatened to tear apart international cricket.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said its chief executives' committee (CEC) had unanimously agreed at its Hong Kong conference to make UDRS mandatory in all international Tests and one-day matches, India's cricket authorities announced.

"The agreed standards will include infrared cameras and audio-tracking devices," the ICC said in a statement on its website.

"The CEC also agreed that further independent and expert research will be carried out into ball-tracking technology and its accuracy and reliability.

"The continued use of ball-tracking technology as a decision-making aid will depend on bilateral agreement between the participating members."

The ground-breaking deal means that India will, for the first time, agree to using the UDRS in a Test series when they tour England from July. But the world champions released a statement after the meeting insisting that the Hawkeye ball-tracking system remained "unacceptable".

"The BCCI has always expressed its willingness to embrace technology, for the betterment of the game," said Narayanaswami Srinivasan, the president-elect of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, in a statement posted on its website.

Hot Spot, the "thermal imaging" technology now available and made mandatory in the UDRS, will mostly be used for close catches and edges.

But the committee decided that the use of Hawkeye, which tracks the trajectory of the delivery, would continue to depend on agreement between both teams in any match.

Lbw decisions will continue to be governed by the on-field umpires.

Under the agreement, teams will be allowed to make one incorrect challenge to an on-field umpire's decision before all their referrals for that innings are used up.

Meanwhile, the ICC also opened the door Monday for non-Test playing nations to compete in the next World Cup, reversing a bar that had outraged "minnows" such as Ireland and Holland.

The ICC in a statement said the CEC had recommended a qualifying process for the 2015 tournament, without specifying how many teams it wanted to see taking part.

The recommendation rows back on the ICC's unpopular decision to limit the 2015 World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand, to the 10 full-member teams -- excluding Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada, Kenya and other countries.

Officials are believed to be in favour of retaining a 10-team limit but a qualifying tournament would give minor nations a chance of reaching the event.

The committee approved recommendations to continue research into the use of different colour balls in day/night Test matches and the directive that batsmen can be given out for obstructing the field if they change their direction when running between the wicket to block a run-out chance.

We will never be in 8 beating Zim alone. We need to beat 8 on a regular basis and some other top ranking team once a while.

BFD!

I think this is only fair. If we cannot beat a bunch of associates, we should not be playing in WC. There was a stage when we needed the peace of mind so players can concentrate on their game and not worry about whether they can play or not. But after so many years with the big boys, we really should be good enough that we don't care about the associates anymore. If we can't, that is our problem, not theirs.

Now, I don't support a 10 team world cup and I think the associates should be playing, but if we must have 10 team world cup, there has to be a qualifying round for the last 2/3 positions.

we should beat the associates in any conditions, home or away. we should also expect to always lose one or even two matches, especially if the conditions don't suit us. that being said, a proper tournament will probably see us playing either 3-4 matches and then a SF and Final or 5-6 matches and then a direct Final. I don't see any teams out-playing us over the course of 5-6 games no matter what the playing conditions.

I can easily see Zimbabwe missing out at Ireland or even maybe Afghanistan's benefit.

This is basically a return to the ICC Trophy days and essentially makes the World Cup the Champions Trophy. It Should really have been 12 teams and not 10. They need to stick to a goddamn format instead of changing it at whim of the powers that be.
