ESPN article

Pietersen retires from one-day cricket

Kevin Pietersen has retired from all international limited overs cricket with immediate effect. He will remain available for consideration as a specialist Test match player only. The news comes four months before England defend their World T20 title in Sri Lanka.

"With the intensity of the international schedule and the increasing demands on my body, I think it is the right time to step aside and let the next generation of players come through to gain experience for the World Cup in 2015," Pietersen said. "I am immensely proud of my achievements in the one-day game but still wish to be considered for selection for England in Test cricket.

The terms of ECB central contracts state that any player who makes themselves unavailable for either format of one-day cricket is automatically ruled out of selection for both ODIs and T20s.

"For the record, were the selection criteria not in place, I would have readily played for England in the upcoming World Twenty20," Pietersen said.

He has no plans to retire from the IPL, which will further increase tensions between IPL and international cricket and heighten the debate over whether a window is becoming increasingly necessary to seek accommodation between the tournament and the international circuit.

Pietersen, 31, has played 127 ODIs and 36 international T20s for England, making his international debut in 2004 against Zimbabwe in Harare. Pietersen has scored 4,184 runs at an average of 41.84 in one-day internationals and averages 37.93 in international T20 cricket.

He should've just retired after the WT20 if he wanted to quit. English are gonna struggle now for the WC, I guess considering the form he was in during the IPL.

I am too surprised at his decision but he had a very rough time with board officials. KP got few warnings and fine for tweeting and attacking English commies. I wonder its anything got to do with his decision.

He is being a pr!ck as usual. This is his way of saying ODIs should die. Great player but too big of an ego.

I was thinking the same. Sad to see him retire because he is an exciting player to watch. I hope he does an afridi and returns to limited format again in the future

Shows he never cared for England, why should he? afterall he is Sounth African.

A player with passion for their country will play as long as they stay fit but for him its not the case ...

I think he retired from T20 as well..correction: he'll play T-20. Now I agree with you..

Like Naimul bhai said he may retire because of some off the field Incidents. Hope he doesn't do another Afridi..

He didn't volunatarily retire from T20Is. According to ECB rules, being ineligible for selection for ODIs means you are automatically ineligible for selection for T20Is as well. He'll still be playing the IPL.

Oh come on KP. You are only 32 man, he could have easily played for another 3 years. I think he is pissed at ECB. Huge loss for England.

Too big of an ego right. Also seems like he doesn't care for English cricket but why should he be nonetheless that's not in his blood. If he did care for English cricket then atleast he would see off T20 WC which is just around the corner. Those West Indians and this KP are of same similar kind of egoistic mindset but ECB also played a reluctant role in reconditioning him.

From all of these situations, I hope our Bd players stay away from getting conflicts with board as was the case with Tamim and vice versa Board officials also need to be careful in treating certain players.

I think KP gave enough time ahead of the tournament for the selectors to workout new combinations. If he wanted to be a prick he would have done a Rockibul which would have been to announce retirement just days before the World T-20.

Those who are criticising kp they should know that Kp didnot retire from t20 but its policy of ecb that eventually ruling him out of playing anymore t20 as he choose to retire from odi.. Its ecb's decision that kp wont play t20 anymore not kp's..
Check this Kevin Pietersen impasse demands ECB rethink..

Andy Flower backs Ian Bell to fill Kevin Pietersen void

Ian Bell was recalled to the England squad on Monday for their upcoming three-match one-day international series against the West Indies.

Warwickshire batsman Bell returns to the limited overs set-up after being left out of England's 4-0 one-day win against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in February, having struggled in the preceding Tests.

However, with Kevin Pietersen having retired from one-day internationals last week, England have a vacancy at the top of the order that Bell, who made an unbeaten 76 in the drawn third Test against the West Indies concluded at Edgbaston on Monday, is set to fill alongside one-day skipper Alastair Cook.

The 30-year-old Bell averages just over 34 in 108 one-day internationals and has scored just the one hundred.

"We don't want him to do a similar job to Pietersen, we want him to be Ian Bell and play great international cricket.

With regard to England limited overs matches, Pietersen -- who remains a Test player -- had just wanted to appear in Twenty20 fixtures while opting out of 50-over clashes.

But that was against the terms of his England central contract and Flower said: "It's important to make policy in the best interests of English cricket. You've got to be careful when setting precedents."

Flower also said it was important 50-over one-day internationals remained respected by cricket's leading teams.

"It's a matter of principle and of supporting one-day international cricket. Protecting the integrity of one-day cricket is important.

"There is a danger, not of a mass exodus, but of players wanting to pick and chose. With the finances involved, there is a danger they might just pick Twenty20 cricket and this could denigrate the status of 50-over cricket.

"England have never won a 50-over ICC competition and we are very eager to do so," Flower said.
