Question What's Your "Official" Nickname?

We in Bangladesh have a wonderful tradition of having "official" Bangla or Banglicized nicknames often unrelated the actual "official" name.

Mine is Shubho. My father's was Bachchu. My mom's is Lucky (pronounced Lakee by most), given to her by my grandmother nicknamed Rozi. She nicknamed her other kids Bobby, Jolly and Joy! The irony is, my late grandmother was a Bangla professor educated in an English medium Islamic institution in Kolkata before her MA at the DU.

I have biracial (Irish American) cousins named Onindo, Ornob and Osheem all born and raised in Staten Island. All three are fluent in shundor Bangla, and can read Bangla newspapers.

Since we are having discussions about the "rightness" of nicknames. Well I always found it distasteful among gatherings when Bangali uncle-aunty openly discusses their naak-shitkani racism: Badhua? Chirolata? Mahua? Bhabi egula to "Hindu" naam.....

Enter chachamia/ a cleric to give 'fatwa': Keyamat er din Allah shei cheleke dakbe jei Musolmaan namee mayer kache chele porichito. Yes, Snigdha falls under that blacklisted category of "hindu" naam

Probably it's my upbringing but having cousins with "christian" names or "foreign" names it doesn't bother me. As much as I love Bangla (which btw I dont have to justify to anyone anyway) I will not exactly torture myself in front of the altar of linguistic aesthetics or poetry.

^Wow! During my time it was simpler names like Shubho, Shumon, Shobhon, Partho, Titash, Shujon, Monju, Mintu and Khoka. Only Munier Chacha (RIP) and his family gave his kids really unusual names like Bhashon, Mishuk and Tonmoy. Goes to show how far Bangla has come after liberation MashAllah.

While I agree with the first para snipped portion of the your post - I don't see a way to reconcile the "not my way or the highway" assertion with the smug and snide "English medium hipness" remark.

This is so simple: you know when you do Akikah,(this is a festival for Muslims after the birth of a newborn to name the child) the official name you get is that name that it will be called in the day of judgement. As we grow up, we tend to pick up many nicknames from school, family etc...and there is nothing "unislamic" about that!

you know, our Prophet Mohammad(May Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) also had a nickname. it was called Al-Amin aka the Trustworthy one. I guess this is more of a Title than a nickname...

With that being said, In Islam it is not from the sunnah to make fun of others through Deragotary nicknames. here is my evidence:

Sahih International
Quote:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
Al-quran Surah Hujurat, verse 11(chapter 49, verse 11)

That's the nickname given to me by fellow BC members, and I love my 2nd nick as much as বিজয় loves his.

Snigdha (not Snigdho) means softie, modhur... chaader Snigdha, komol hashi. Kinun jui chanachur tel.

My Dadu (may GOD bless her soul in peace and grant her jannah) used to call me "siddho" as in siddho dim.

Little must be said that I found the soft nature of the name -for a lack of better term 'Orpheus'- so I prefer Zeeshan as common as it is.

My dad's first choice was Zico. And even Socrates.

My nickname is Nasif, not to be confused with our BC admin Nasif bhai. Actually I'm more known as Nasif than Razi by the people surrounding me.

We have people on BC with various names such as Nazmul and Shubho. We should make a BC playing XI which composes of members on BC who have the same (or similar) names to BD cricketers in the national team.

For starters Nadim bhais name is Nazmul so he can be our pace bowler Nazmul Hossain and Sohel bhai being "Shubho" can be our Suhrawardi "Shuvo" (aka spin bowler). So we already have 2 players in the BanglaCricket Team

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9. Sohel; Shubho (Suhrawardi Shuvo)
10. nadim 98; Nazmul (Nazmul Hossain)
11.

Any other BC members who have the same (or similar) names to any other BD cricketers? I think this will be fun.
