Default New Zealand Match Fixing Scandal

NZ's biggest sporting scandal: NZ stars targeted in cricket cheating probe

A global anti-corruption unit investigating cricket match-fixing is poised to blow the lid off the biggest sporting scandal in New Zealand's history.
The International Cricket Council's anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) has been in New Zealand during the past four months as part of an investigation into match- and spot-fixing.
It is believed up to three former New Zealand cricketers are involved in fixing that allegedly occurred in more than one country.
"It's a difficult situation," New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said. "New Zealand Cricket is aware the ICC is investigating some former New Zealand cricketers.

NZ's biggest sporting scandal: Law change to stop the frauds

Sports Minister Murray McCully announced plans late last week to make match-fixing a criminal offence.
He said the issue would be monitored by nine government agencies to preserve the integrity of elite sports in New Zealand.
This followed a report into links between organised crime and drugs in New Zealand sport after an Australian Crime Commission investigation found "no evidence of systemic use of performance-enhancing substances or the involvement of organised crime" in the country.

NZ's biggest sporting scandal: Evidence reveals fixing spectre casts a long shadow

It is often assumed the spectre of spot- and match-fixing is confined to the Indian subcontinent, but there is plenty of evidence to the contrary.
In March last year, Britain's Sunday Times published a story about match-fixing and said two New Zealanders, whose names the paper claimed to know but chose not to print, were offered to bookmakers as players who could help manipulate games.
New Zealand Cricket said the allegations were not credible.
"We are not interested in unsubstantiated rumour or speculation," said NZC chief executive David White at the time. "The integrity and reputation of the game is paramount and NZC has absolute confidence that our players share these ideals."
Recent cricket is littered with tales of money changing hands between bookmakers and players.
