Question Ideal first inings total?

So, we are @ 95-1 after end of day 2, and trail by 294 runs.

What would be the ideal first innings total?

IMHO, we should be looking to WIN this match, so if we bat whole day tomorrow (possible given that we still have 3 of our main batsman to bat), we will score another 315 (90*3.5) without losing more than 5 wickets by end of day 3. That will give us about 100+ runs lead. Then come out on day 4 and bat another 30 overs at least to take the lead to 180+ by 4th day Lunch. So ideally I would be happy, in fact WE SHOULD score 500+ on this track. No venom on this bowling attack unless we gift our wickets away.

We have enough spinners to put Zim under pressure on of day 4 it will assist them.

What you say?

I would say anything over 450 is an ideal score. It all depends on how our batsmen do in the first session.

If Ash doesn't play like Ash, we have a good chance to reach there.

Your numbers are a little off. If we score 315 tomorrow, we'll only lead by about 20-25 runs not 100+.

We should look to score 330-350 tomorrow, even if we get all out, no harm done since we'd have to declare anyways. We should look to bowl around 75 overs on Day 4 and pick up 6-7 wickets, meaning we need to end our innings in the first hour of Day 4, not lunch. ZIM bat slow, and if they bat the whole 75 overs, they will score around 180-200 runs. We need to run through the tail quick, and that will leave us around 200 to chase in about 2.5 sessions on Day 5.

We need to get a significant lead. 300 runs tomorrow will have us sitting at 400 by EOD. Another 200 by tea on day 4 will mean we'll be at 600 with 4 sessions to go. Cutting it close. Plus, I'm not sure our batsmen can score at 3.3/over consistently for 5 sessions. This might just end in a draw, thanks to the Zimbabwean slow pokes.

We must bat once to win this match. I don't know whether we are capable of doing that, but if we bat till tea on 4th day, we will probably win the match comfortably.

Any result is still possible in this match.

Yep 650+ first innings total.

Bat till just after lunch and declare with 260+ lead should be good. With 4 and half session with attacking field we should look for a win.

650

Let's see if we are capable of scoring that many runs. I feel we will probably score around 450 in the first innings.

I would say we need to score 500+ if we're thinking about winning the match. We're batting last, so we need 100-150 run lead then try and bundle them out for 250 and chase 100-150 in the 4th innings.

If we score 400 then we a win is still possible but our bowlers will have to bowl well to bowl them out for less than 250. Chasing 250+ in the 4th innings will be tough.

If we score 300 or less, than we'll have to bat ourselves to a draw.

If we are to have any chance to win, we need to score at least 600. However, we need to concentrate on not losing wickets. If we can bat until tea of Day 4, ZIM will be on the back foot.

Jahirul, Ash, Mushy, Shakib, Riyad, Nasir. Is this batting order capable of scoring another 400? yea I think so. Need about 2-3 big partnerships. They should proceed session by session. If they can score 600 + against a Lankan bowling attack. They should be able to score 500+ against a Zimbabwe attack.. The wicket had something for the bowlers but right now, there is very little. If they can see off that "very little", they can enjoy the rest. I liked the approach yesterday and it should be similar after the first few overs. Push the fielders back a little and play with ease.

I don't care about the total. You can't put a tag on it. Just bat, bat, bat. And then bat some more. Tire these African ducks!
