Default Lara is greater than Sachin: ponting

"You always found a way to restrict Sachin if you needed to. Lara could turn it on in half an hour and take a game away
from you," Ponting said.

LONDON: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has rated Brian Lara ahead of Sachin Tendulkar as he feels the West Indian batsman
enabled his team win more matches.

lara was a great batsman but if you look closer at his record you find that he struggled against quality fast bowlers. sachin is over hyped though, sure he's broken a lot of records, but a lot of them are due to longevity, which in it's own way is very special but we don't rate courtney walsh one of the best fast bowlers ever just because he took 500+ test wickets.

as far as winning more matches for the team, one also has to consider that sachin had some other great batsmen around him e.g. dravid, laxman, sehwag and even guys like ganguly. lara didn't have quite as much back-up as sachin has had.

Hater says why sachin can't play long innings like lara (i.e 300+)
bcoz lara opens for wi & sachin play at no 4.so sachin rarely get a chance to play long innings & india has too many greats like dravid laxman etc.so they make most of run .
But lara was main batsman of wi.

Lara was the better batsman to watch for me...I know longevity is a huge plus for Tendulkar and his records speak for themselves, but if I had to choose between them...I'd pay to watch Lara...so much more explosive, that shimmy when he came down the wicket and those square cuts/drives.

what is this?

Lara opened for the WI? What a handful of times in his career? Oh and I like how Sachin batting with such a strong lineup is a perceived negative, but Lara being the main attraction of a weak lineup isn't...

sorry lara used to bat @ no3 and no 4
but he get many over to play.
In case of sachin india always have a great opening pair & then wall so sachin rarely get a opportunity to bat at early

If Sachin had retired at least 2-3 years ago then many people may have argued with Ponting's statement. But now playing more and more he is only damaging his reputation. Lara did the right thing retiring early. Now whenever people make comparison between two, they only consider Lara's high time and Sachin's low time now.

Personally, i have always loved watching Lara and Sachin's batting when they were at their peak. Both of them were such a treat to watch. Lara was exciting and aggressive whereas Sachin is calm and calculative.

in all fairness it works both ways, sachin at times had less opportunity to score because he had less overs and most of the runs had already been scored but at the same time he had more opportunity at times because he had better partners and therefore got more overs and got on top of the bowling with the help of his partner giving him the advantage to score runs.

lara in turn, at times got lots of overs and didn't have many runs on the board when he batted which was an advantage at times, but at the same time he had poor partners so they got out quicker than the likes of dravid and laxman and therefore he had less opportunity to score.

they're both capable of scoring runs and there were plus and minus at different times for each of them due to their weak or strong line-ups.

same can be said for ponting, had he retired 2-3 years earlier he would have been seen in a better light and when it comes to future generations looking back, the ones who never saw ponting play, they will just look at his average and stats and say he was great but was he right at the top? probably not. on the other hand those of us who watch his entire career can remember when he was scoring a ton almost every test match (back when he averaged almost 60).

It'd be difficult for me to get into an argument without being somewhat biased, so I won't even try. But both are legends to the game, and legends can't be compared. There is a faction who believes Lara is better, and another faction who believes Sachin is. Everybody has their all time best, and they're all right in their own way, since greatness is subjective and it can't be measured. We can always throw in statistics but there're many things that are not reflected in the score sheet. Its impossible to get a consensus when talking about all time greats, and that's why the word 'great' is used in plural.

Which one is better? The Shawshank Redemption or The Godfather?

and that's why i rate guys like graeme pollock, barry richards and mike procter so highly. they don't win a statistics argument but if you consider ex-player/umpire/cricket expert accounts plus what people did see of them (even if not much in test cricket) you'd be hard pressed to find higher praise for any other players in history.

when it comes to the all time greats they're of such a high and equal quality that it's generally something other than stats which makes someone say so and so was the better.

I think Ponting is just jealous of Shochin's success , so he said that.

Stats dont completely tell the truth. Lara played in what most likely was the worse WI team of that era. Carrying the team on his back. Look at the situations Lara made most of his match winning knocks under extreme pressure with sometimes little or no help from others.

In ODI sachin is better. But Lara is the Test King. Played spin bowling like no other.

Greatest Innings of Brian Lara.

If we are talking about enabling team to win matches I reckon Inzamam will be right up there! Probably won most of the matches that Pakistan won by himself during his era!
