Hodge is known as an arrogant and selfish person in Aus cricket. Thats why he could never find a permanent place even after being such a good batsmen. Aus fans have high hope on khawaja. Although he has been known as lazy and casual, he has always scored in difficult conditions where most others failed.
Going by the comments on Cricinfo and Twitter, most Austraians believe this is the best team selectors could come up with at the moment with but they also believe this team is one of the weakest that have ever traveled to England based on the number of games the players played and their averages.

thought hodge was retired from FC cricket and/or international cricket? it is a weak team, pacers are good but otherwise it's not very strong.

Love the Ashes. So much history. Such rivalry between the two countries.

Chris Rogers is a selection waiting to be made. He should have had more chances a long time ago and i feel that if he can click alongside Clarkey then Australia's batting will be strengthened immensely. Jackson Bird is a very good bowler and i hope he plays in this series. I'm not too sure where to slot Watson has he is in poor form, also the Aussie team seem short of a middle order batsmen. I hope the team selection is changed up a bit to rejuvenate the team.

1. Dave Warner
2. Shane Watson
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Chris Rogers
5. Michael Clarke
6. Matthew Wade
7. James Faulkner
8. Peter Siddle
9. James Pattinson
10. Nathan Lyon
11. Mitchell Starc/Jackson Bird

If the top order can click then it will be much better then the top order of...
1. Dave Warner
2. Ed Cowan
3. Phillip Hughes

reckon david hussey would have strengthened this squad, he may not of had a great FC season but he's done very very well in county cricket over the years. his experience in english conditions would have been very helpful imo.

England will win this one as well as the one in Australia. They are ahead in every department.

Good performance by the Australians to beat Somerset. Finally some decent scores by Phil Hughes in both innings.

About time Uzzie made some runs.

Ed Cowan will definitely be dropped for the first test

Great stuff from watto. Rodgers also look set. So openers are set but #3 is crucial position, i have never liked hughes, has a pathetic technique and he gets exposed everytime against good bowlers.

My X1

Watson
Rodgers
Warner
Clarke
Khawaja
Haddin
Faulkner
Pattinson
Bird
Harris
Ahmed

I dont think they will pick Warner because he had no match preperation leading upto the Ashes.

yeah doesn't seem like they'll pick warner, though i'd prefer him over cowan.

i was a big supporter of hughes, now i'm finding it hard to back him. tbh i do like all of hughes, warner and cowan. cowan i seem to like the look of the more i see him bat, warner is always exciting but he's been quite consistent in tests, hughes was a run machine but has fallen away (in the longer format). at this level consistency is a big thing warner has then same amount of test centuries and one extra half century to his name than hughes does and warner has played quite a few less test innings.

Out of Hughes, Warner and Cowan i would pick Warner. He has been pretty good in tests and is also a game changer. I would like Hughes to be given another chance but ultimately this is probably Australia's best batting lineup.

1. Shane Watson
2. Dave Warner
3. Chris Rogers
4. Michael Clarke
5. Dave Hussey/Callum Ferguson
6. Steve Smith
7. Brad Haddin

Since Warner isn't playing in the first test then Roger will slot in as opener and Hughes would be at #3.

Steve Smith will definitely be picked for the 1st Ashes test. Made 68*(96) against Worcest.

Jackson Bird wil definitely play Ashes. He has peformed everywhere he has bowled and i'm glad he is making a statement. Bird has a nice easy action and is a genuine wicket taker who always bowls in the right channels. Excited for him.
