Default The Strategy and Tactics Thread

Bangladesh team lacks big in two department.
  1. Strategy: proper team selection, how to pace scoring, etc.
  2. Tactics: field placement, bowling rotation, etc.
How would you have approached it for a given series or match?

For example, for today's match's strategy, I probably would have kept Rubel out and brought in Al-Amin. Anamul looked like a fish out of water as an opener, but I don't know we have a better option with Tamim out.

For tactics, I would have gone all out after the 5th wicket fell.

If you don't know strategy, and you don't know tactics, what else is there?

Well for starters Al Amin should have been chosen in place of Rubel. After the fifth wicket fell, Mushifiq should have gone all out instead of dropping back fielders and bowling part timers.Should have gone for the kill.

I would have given the captaincy to Rubel! In fact, anyone will do other than Mushy.
Comparing Anamul and Shamsur's recent scores, Anamul seems better than Shamsur. So, I would have tried Imrul instead of Shamsur.
I would have replaced Nasir with Zia, Razzak with Arafat, Sohag with Al-Amin.
And, get another batsman in like .. ... .. doesn't matter who.

If shakib comes back razzak should be out. Imrul can play opener and anam should bat at middle order in place of nasir. Nasir is completely out of form out of self confidance.

What is the point of this thread? The captain has to make decision on the field, and our leader clearly lacks the capacity to do so..

I am sure BD team has quite a few analysts outside of the coach who gives regular feedback to the team and captain. But unfortunately, we don't have someone smart enough to implement those tips/recommendations in the field.

make two changes for next game:

Rubel in for Shafiul
Arafat Sunny in for Razzak

Death bowling Strategy(when defending a total):

use the bowler who has been most economical and most effective with the ball. one bad over, take him out.

Rubel should finish his quota before or during powerplay overs.

when going for the kill:

keep attacking with strike bowlers. do not take strike bowlers off unless they are really really tired(like a fast bowler who bowled 6+ overs on the trott)

in the middle overs, use as many options as you can.

The sad reality:

None or most of our bowlers can handle bowling in clutch or crucial situations, sometimes it is not at all Mushfiqur's fault, the bowlers get nervous for some reason. This is quite obviously a big problem. This is what costing us many games from winning -> Losing.

Its all about psychology, otherwise how can we lose to a team like Afghanistan (not taking away from their win) but we are far far far better team than them.

2 centuries, highest total ever - yet we lose!!

If we have already lost the match in our head even before the match starts or ends, no strategy will ever help.

For the next match, get Razzak and Shafiul out of the team. Keep Zia and Al-Amin as the only pacers.

For tactics, hire a few good cricket brains to sit on the sideline. Send instructions to Mushfiqur through fielders.

Oh man. You really are in the doldrums. Can you fall further or you think you cannot go any lower. If the latter, look at the bright side. You can only go up. The team may yet surprise you. They can. Just look at 2013.

If a reporter dare and ask the quesion about strategy and tactics to the captain (and the coach), most likely he would get the following response..

" We're talking about strategy & tactics. I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about strategy & tactics, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about strategy & tactics. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last but we're talking about strategy & tactics man."

Sorry Iverson for stealing your quote and fudging a little bit.

I can bet you cannot stay away from our cricket. I promised myself many times, "enough is enough!" But, when the game comes, I am glued.

What should be the strategy and tactics for that?

Apples to oranges Fazal. Cricket, even T20, is a lot more sedentary and not played at the frenetic pace of the NBA. At the NBA it's all speed, skill, and technique. You don't have time for strategy or techniques - all you're doing us executing choreographed movements. Only time tactics might come into play is in deciding whether to foul and give up a free throw.

Iverson was wrong. Please look around the NBA and you'll find coaches with good strategy and tactics win. You need a good team, but that alone does not do it. I don't like Phil Jackson, but look at the success he has had.

If Mushfiqur tries to give this response, he will be double wrong!

The strategy for tomorrow's game is simple! Someone in Bangladesh please take Sanga and Jaya out for clubbing. Get them hammered and hopefully they will throw their wickets away tomorrow due to a massive hangover!
