Default Ramiz Raja insults Bangladesh

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja’s criticism of Bangladesh cricket and its players has irked the Bangladesh fans a great deal. Visibly not a fan of Bangladesh cricket, Ramiz’s latest round of criticism though is no surprise given his history of dishing out offensive comments.

Ramiz, who is part of the commentary team of the Star Sports network covering the ongoing 2015 ICC World Cup, openly offended Bangladesh as a country as well as its cricket team several times during their Pool A opener against Afghanistan last Wednesday at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Those who watched the game between Bangladesh and Afghanistan, it was clearly evident for all to see that the 52-year old commentator was favouring the Afghans from the very first delivery of the match. And as far as the Tigers are concerned, they were on the receiving end of some unfair and baseless hostility.

Ramiz started out by mocking the nicknames of the Bangladesh cricketers. The former skipper also made ill comments regarding the traffic system of Bangladesh. Ramiz went as far as to question the role played by the Bangladesh Cricket Board towards the development of cricket in the country.

At times, his disparagement was bordering on the ridiculous. When seamer-allrounder Soumya Sarkar came on to bowl against the Afghans, Ramiz referred to him as “Sumaiya Sarkar” - a mistake which is really unbecoming of a top commentator. Not only that, he is probably the only commentator in the world who calls Shakib al Hasan “Sakibul”. Not known for toning down, Ramiz also refers to every Bangladesh cricketer with the name Rahman as “Rehman”.

It is no surprise therefore that the Bangladesh fans are calling for his head as they want him banned from commentating in any match involving the Tigers. Effigies of the former Pakistan captain have already been burned in several parts of Bangladesh. And in Facebook and Twitter, activists are running a campaign - #BanRamizRaja.

This is not the first time Ramiz has got himself into hot water. After undermining India during their clash against archrival Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup in Mirpur, Ramiz was fined 10% of his commentary fee as he pleaded guilty to a Level 1 breach of the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct.

Many are even questioning why the commentary panel did not include at least one commentator from Bangladesh given that there are several good options – Athar Ali Khan and Shamim Ashraf Chowdhury to name but a few.

In the meantime, another commentator of the World Cup, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has also put himself in the line of fire by misinterpreting the action of the Bangladesh players. Following their convincing 105-run win over the Afghans, the Bangladesh cricketers performed a lap of honour as a sign of respect for the travelling fans.

Aakash soon tweeted in his official account, “Bangla Tigers took a victory lap after winning the game...yes, after beating Afghanistan. #ChaseCricket #CWC15.”

This confusion, however, was later cleared by Bangladesh cricketer Mahmudullah. The all-rounder said the lap of honour was for the supporters, nothing else.

About out traffic, I think any Comm would not enjoy the traffic.

Rehman is the Urdu pronunciation of Rahman. Also some of those comments were Ganguly's. Ramiz is a douche but pretty well behaved during that game. Chill out bros!

Why is he using Pakistani pronunciation? We aren't Pakistani, he should learn Bengali pronunciation or quit. Also if he is so well behaved, why was he fined in 2012? Its written in the article.

Not this sh*t again! This OLD and WRONG news. Itwas Ganguly and Harsha who were talking about those things. And anyone who knows their ABC's they should know they weren't making fun of anyone. Ganguly who's bengali himself was talking about how Bengalies have nicknames that are more officials than their official names, such as Bjoy and Roman. And what they said about traffic, if you live or ever visited BD you'd know they weren't wrong about what they were talking about... This was ALL in light hearted.

Come on. This is silly. Ramiz isnt Sidhu. He praised our performance on many occasions. We also gave the world plenty of reasons to criticize us with poor performances.

What a retarded logic, Shakib has been part of many disciplinary issues, does that mean he's a 'obodro chele' ?

Bhai how hard is it for you to go through the forum rules and see what it says for using the word "paki"? How many times do we have to repeat the same thing?

I think members should be quizzed before getting activated
