Chandika Hathurusingha: "The mentality and approach in the team have changed" © Bangladesh Team Management

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha has said that the side's quarter-final finish in the 2015 World Cup was largely due to the fact that the players bought into the changes he suggested. He stated he was "amazed" to have gained the trust of the team in a short span, since his appointment in May 2014.

"It is not just about believing that you will win but also believing that what you are going to do will work," Hathurusingha told reporters in Sydney. "If I tell a player to do something, he has to believe me and himself. If you notice I have changed a lot of things after I came in. You [the media] criticised it a lot but I knew what I was doing. The players trusted that, which is the key for me. I was amazed by how quickly they started to trust me. It usually takes a year, or one-and-a-half years; these boys took three to four months. A lot of credit goes to the players."

Hathurusingha insisted that the 15-man group was not the best Bangladesh could offer and said the composition of the playing XI, particularly in the game against New Zealand, could have been different if he had more options available. Soon after Bangladesh's World Cup squad was announced in January, Hathurusingha voiced his displeasure over the omission of rookie legspinner, Jubair Hossain.

"It is a known fact that this was not our best squad," he said. "I was not happy with a few of the selections. If we have our best team available, going forward we can correct a few things.

"I am not talking about the 11, but the 15. We could have had more options, which would have meant a different story. Against New Zealand we could have won the game ... It is better I talk about what we need to do to going forward rather than what happened. We need to get our combination right."

Hathurusingha also revealed the plan behind Bangladesh's batting order at the World Cup, particularly Mahmudullah's elevation to No. 4 and Mushfiqur Rahim's slot at No. 6. He explained that Mahmudullah's approach as a batsman made him a difficult choice down the order. At the same time, the middle order needed more cushion in Australia and New Zealand where a top-order collapse can cost the match. He mentioned how the use of three openers in the top order was criticised during the West Indies tour last year, but stated it was a move to "protect" the middle-order.

"Mahmudullah is not a guy who can start scoring straightaway. He needs a bit of time. He was batting at No. 7 and 8, where we were wasting his ability," Hathurusingha said. "Mushfiqur was batting at No. 4, he is my best player. For me he is the unsung hero of the World Cup. His strike rate was over 100 and average was 50. His 89 against England was a turning point.

"Mushfiqur was a key player in Australia where the game would be gone if we lost three wickets in the first ten overs. You can't come back. In West Indies, when I started with three openers in the top three, a lot of people said it won't work. I knew that if we want to win, we need to protect our middle order. I told the players and I don't know if they believed or reluctantly agreed, but they knew it would work."

I hope our selectors realize that they should listen to Chandika. Yeah, he won't get every decision right but he is someone who knows what he is doing and should be supported. He is the man to take us forward and I really wish we hadn't taken a boat load of left arm spinners and included a leg-spinner. Could have made some difference but that behind us. Onward and upward now!!

Chandika is the man! He knows what he is doing and how to handle our boys well. Look at these quotes:

Quote:
"I am not reluctant to change things. It depends on the opposition and where we play. I might do something different against Pakistan. The mentality and approach in the team have changed. The players used to give excuses before; they used to say this is the way I am used to playing. Everyone. I am not complaining. It doesn't matter what he is averaging if we are not winning matches."
Quote:
"Number one is the team, then it is the players," he said. "There's no point in having the world's No. 1 allrounder when we are No. 10 in the rankings. We all have to play as a team.
I say job well done! I do see the change in the players as well especially Shakib. I just hope Haturi can keep this up and BCB supports him fully. He is the one who can take us forward

Improvement or attitude e dekhlam. Ager theke onek better. Ar performance wise Shakib will always be Shakib. Or form e ferot ashte beshidin lage na.

Why do you think she had a negative impact on him? He became the No.1 allrounder while he was married to her. His personal life has nothing to do with his professional life

Thank you sir, not for taking us to the quarter final but for making the players realize that the team is lot more important than individual performances. I hope you stay with us for a long time and the board supports you

Haturasinghe should definitely be a selector, if not the chief selector.

He should get a raise, he certainly deserves it

*BCB dislikes this*, Bring on Jubair Hossain.

The coach believes the team could perform better if they had alternatives.

“I’m not talking about one or 11. I’m talking about the 15-member team. The story could have been different if we had enough alternatives,” he said.

Hmmm... who are they?

Make him the chief selector. I dont care this faruque type guy ruining our team. So afterall the decision of playing Soumya was due to Chandika and not that average faruque's. No wonder.

My question is how much power does a coach of other countries have when it comes to selection.

Darren Lehmann of Australia and Mike Hesson of New Zealand are selectors and coach. So they have pretty good power when it comes to selection.

I think the coach has made a very good point, if everyone has to blame the coach for a team's failure then why not give him enough authority to select the players that he thinks will get you the best result. It's so unfair when you see a coach gets all the blame and even loses the job while not even having anything to say over the players selection

Did we really have a bad selection this time round? The selectors, on the other hand, did a fair job I would say. The only issue were the replacement calls. Obviously, the selectors didnt want to take a risk by selecting Rony, Shadman like rookie opening option when Anamul got injured. And Imrul will not become anyone different than who he is already. But you can't blame him for being selected either. Shafiul, on the other hand, is within the national team, so is Abul Hossain Raju, Robiul etc. The latter two arent back in form yet from their injuries. And that's all we have, really. And there lies the problem-- We don't have a pool of 30 players like other top national team does.

To me, I dont think having him as a selector wouldve solved any problem. If we want to solve the 15 quality player problem, we have to discuss the infrastructure of the overall cricket in the country, the A Team coach, U-19 team coach, HP facilities etc.

Hathurasinghe may think that there are other talents out there that the selectors didnt consider or scout. But baring the Jubair Hossain issue, there really weren't any top class players that they missed. Like Siddons once said, there ain't no Tendulkar out there ( for selection)..

Honestly, most of us would probably think the same about Soumya Sarkar until Haturasinghe pointed him out....disagree with the underlined part. Most of us were remotely aware of Jubair Hossain(I didn't know the kid existed until i heard his name in the practice match and baam, He is drafted into the squad).

There ain't no Tendulkar out there but there is definitely quality talent. And Haturi knows how to spot talent. The selectors might not think so but so far he has hit the nail right in the head with Soumya Sarkar and Jubair Hossain. And to some extent, Sabbir Rahman as well. Of course he didn't 'find' Sabbir but Sabbir was out of national team for quite a while and wasn't looking to make a comeback.

Just imagine if we let him find more young talents like this and he succeeds, then how well off we will be for the next few years. I think this coach is the real deal and should be given the freedom to do what he wants.

His target should totally be around 2019 world cup, and winning it. If NZ being ranked lower than us by end of 2013 can end up being on the verge of world champions in 1.5 years, then we should take inspiration and try to emulate with atleast 3x times we have on our hands until the next WC.

It was reported in few news papers that Shafiul was completely unfit when he joined the team as replacement.
