Default Assessment of Teams in the World Cup

(Back after a long absence. Been around reading here and there but needed some time off.)

Here is my assessment of the 14 teams and their campaign. Although the final is yet to be played, I stick by my thoughts on NZ and Australia

UAE, Afghanistan & Scotland: (Good effort but no impact): Afghanistan gave Sri Lanka a scare, Scotland had their moments with BD and NZ and ofcourse the warm ups and UAE shown in glimpses but overall their campaign was little more than to make up the numbers and unfortunately will soon be forgotten.

Zimbabwe (Sad): Loss to Ireland and inability to capitalize on winnable positions vs. IND and PAK and possibly even WI for a nation with Zim's history and experience can not be seen in any way as a positive.

England (Pathetic): No clue on how to play the modern game. However, watching the Irish and Scottish players, their future looks bright

Ireland (Unfortunate): In a right world, head to head is more important than NRR and they qualify over WI. They gave it their all and it seems harsh to lump them in as an associate when Bangladesh and Zimbabwe get full status treatment. They did things right to the best of their abilities but luck was not in their favor.

West Indies & Pakistan (Embarassing): Based on the overall tournament and their stature the shining moments could be considered fluke performances that was just enough to make the knockouts and absolutely nothing more. Gayle's double and Wahab were the bright points but these teams are not associates where personal performances should be more meaningful than the team approach and result.

Bangladesh (Unfair but successful): Barring a lackluster effort against Sri Lanka, the effort of the openers and poor umpiring calls in the quarters, the team did everything the right way. The attitude and effort was what fans had been calling for years. Most of the players bought into the team attitude and tried to contribute to a positive result as the situation demanded. I'm not going to Bash BCCI or the Indian team as that only makes us look bad as fans. Question is now, how to bring this success to the upcoming PAK series. A case to made for being the 5th or 6th best team in the tournament

Sri Lanka and India: (Appropriate): Teams finished where they should. India may have overachieved by going undefeated in group stage but their departures were indicative of how superior the top 3 favorites really were. Sad to see Sanga and Mahela end their ODI career this way but with 4 consecutive centuries and a match saving century, these two showed what the cricket world will miss. Dhoni without a doubt added to his captaincy legacy. Not a befitting defence for a defending champion but other than the great Windies of 70s/80s and the might Oz of the 96-2011 era, who could after four years?

South Africa (Heartbreaking): Gave it their all but just came up short against an even more determined and slightly better outfit. Had they not had the hiccups against IND and PAK, that semifinal may have well been the Final. It was hard not to respect AB and his boys and not share the tears with them, even the Kiwis felt their pain amonst the joy of a first time trip to the finals.

Australia (deserving): Win or lose in Melbourne, Australia made the finals as a deserving team. A solid outfit top to bottom they understand how to reinvent the game. Sheer talent coupled with unbridled aggression makes them a love or hate team but never a team to be overlooked.

New Zealand (Impressive): This feels like their cup to lose and judging from the Aus, BD and SA games to date, they are a team with a mission. Whatever the outcome on sunday, this team has won over a new generation of fans. Sucks for me as I have to explain that I am not a band wagonner and have been supporting NZ since 1980 when I first saw a cricket game (the famous underarm match). They have taken the Australian aggression but with a touch of class that makes them the team to root for. McCullum's congratulation to Mahmadullah following his century and Vettori seeking out to hug Shakib following the win and Elliot and Dan going to conlose AB and Steyn are just examples of the class this team has.

It would be a shame if the world cup were to become a champions trophy+ going forward as ICC intends it to but overall, i believe this has been one of the better and engaging world cups for Cricket Fans, regardless of who your allegiance lies with.

FP material. Very well summarized.

Liked the ending about NZ. A very gentleman team. AUS and NZ are very effective but two very different teams in terms of approach and composition. Aggressive cricket VS Clinical Performance

Missed you. Where were you? Good analysis.
Pak had equal points with SA. Head to head Pak > SA. no? Pak ran in to Australia. SA wouldn't have faired better. Just like India.

The two best teams are playing in the finals. I think Australia takes revenge with some interest.

agree that PAK shoulda ranked higher with head to head. SA was a different team in the knockouts with a different fire based on their matches vs. SL and NZ. Still believe the best two teams are in the final but i think SA would have fared better against Aus than Ind and Pak did. Not a fan of the NRR as the first tie breaker since teams can play to minimize loss difference and also a game like NZ/Aus which was a 1 wicket win can give a huge NRR to NZ where it was not indicative of the match.

On a personal note, didn't have enough time. 2nd kid, new house, promotion etc. Not to mention the poor ICC calendar

The best two teams are playing in the final. I wouldn't rate SA as high as you're doing seeing their miserable performance against India and Pakistan. I would say, they can beat anyone if they bat first .

UAE - By their standards a respectable effort. 180 plus in every game bar vs India, batted 48 or so overs in every game. An okayish batting display and a relatively impressive bowling display in all honesty. Naveed is a decent bowler tbh. In reality though they didnt really do anything other than make up the numbers. Had they shown the fight they showed vs Zimbabwe and Ireland maybe they'd have impressed, but alas they seemed content by the end to simply head home with some memories. 4.5/10

Scotland - Massively disappointing. Like all Scottish teams they just totally bottled it under pressure. Respectable vs NZ and impressive vs Bangladesh, they never quite clicked at any point. Should have convincingly beaten Afghanistan but bottled that too. Will be hugely annoyed with themselves and did not perform to their standards. Another case of what may have been and another winless WC. 5/10

Afghanistan. Pathetic batting was as I expected and predicted totally exposed. Only one 210 plus score all tournament that vs SL. Bowling was decent, batting woeful. Need to get serious about batting and not be content to be crickets fairy tale if they want to progress. Great game vs SL and a wonderful win vs Scotland mixed in with some absolute hammerings. Good enough I'd say, but they have to stop being content with their current status and get a professional set up started (which Moles is trying to do). 6.5/10

Ireland - What a horrible way to leave a WC. For the 4th time we get screwed over by NRR, but we only have ourselves to blame. Threw away two excellent platforms vs Pakistan and India and bowled garbage vs UAE when a comfortable win should have been taken. Batting was top notch with all the batsmen getting at least 1 50 and several 250 plus scores. Bowling woeful and not playing more than 1 specialist bowler in any game was total madness especially when the bits and pieces players failed with bat and ball. An impressive campaign cut short by inability to kill the game off vs Zim and UAE. 7,5/10

Zimbabwe - Can only be viewed as a nightmare tbh. Unlucky vs Ireland,Pakistan,India and arguably the WI. Batted well in every game but bowled awfully. Taylor,Williams and Chatara carried the rest who contributed practically nothing. Bottom line is they finished 4 points behind an Associate team and in second last so it can only be viewed as a failure of a WC. 4/10

Bangladesh - Excellent campaign. 1 horrible game vs SL aside, they competed in every match and dumped a Big 3 team out. Reached the QF's which was the ultimate goal so has to be seen as a successful WC. With such a young squad there is plenty of room to improve too. 7.5/10

England - Absolutely pathetic. Hammered in every game vs a top 8 team. Embarrassing batting order with Taylor at 6 ahead of Buttler and Ballance at 3. Morgan woeful, bowling woeful, batting woeful. Simply woeful. 2/10

Sri Lanka - Great in group stage but humiliated in the QF's as the old guys just ran out of puff. Sanga bowed out with a brilliant WC, but I seriously worry about them long term. Pretty average tournament - good with bat, bad with ball, not great, not bad. 6.5/10

Pakistan - Shambolic beginning. Garbage team selection, clueless management, terrible batting and 2 humiliating losses. Got their act together after that and showed improvement and notched a big win vs SA. Easily beaten in QF. Reality is they're just a middle of the road ODI team IMO. 6/10 (would've been 2 had they continued on their expected path after losing to the WI_

WI - Pathetic. Qualified thanks to Pakistans ineptitude early on and an ability to kill small teams off. No desire, no discipline, not an ounce of passion bar Holder,Sammy and Simmons.Half the team eyeing up the IPL halfway through the group stages. Hate this team. Get rid. 4/10

India - Slightly better than would've thought after the tri series. Outstanding in group but found out vs a top team. No shame in that. A decent enough campaign all things considered. 7.5/10

SA - Put everything into it but came up short. Didnt choke but were beaten by a better team. Heart felt for them after losing but thats world cup sport for you. Behardien and Parnell playing over Abbott is a total joke though. Will be devastated after yet another failure in a knock-out but they gave it their all. 7/10

Australia - Fantastic in all departments and have feasted on the flat pitches. Definitely worthy finalists 9/10 (10 if they win)

NZ - Same as above. Such a likeable team in all aspects. Every neutral is rooting for them. Win or lose I cant think of any faults in their displays tbh so they get the top mark. 10/10

^ good one Donald.
UAE: I was horrified knowing they are playing WC and Holland not. I thought they would be hammered to oblivion. The expectation was zero, actually in minus. Then they punched above their weight. Promises are there. However, with their ameteur status I am not sure if it can continue. I'd give them a 5/10.

Scots: They caught my attention with the pretournament noise. Thought they would challenge some teams. They did but couldn't get over the hump. Promises are there with all the county players. Future is bright. No wins and higher expectation - 4/10.

Afgans: The rise is phenomenal. A win in the 1st WC campaign. The struggle they face... Great bowling unit. Needs a good coach. 6.5/10.

Eng: I was thinking well they have a good bowling unit. The games are going to be in Aus-NZ where there is bounce. Then the media was already projecting them to the semis when Morgan and Co. beat Ind twice in tri-series and went in to the finals. This team missed a scot. Paul Collingwood. Finn's fifer got them .5 points extra. Rebuild should be #1 criteria. 3.5/10.

Zim: Ball didn't bounce their way. Feel extremely bad for Dav. Shoulda , woulda win more games. However, they are test playing nation with quality players. The result is unacceptable. 4/10.

Ireland: Unfortunate. Give them the test status. 7/10.

WI: Lloyd's gamble is internal matter. Keeping out regulars like Bravo and Pollard (in their prime) was mind boggling. Future is even bleaker. Who is the future ODI star? Smith? This team was really hurt when Naraine decided not to come. Those three changes the complexion of the team totally. Got to the QFs. Graham Smith ate his word. With all the talent in the world... 6.5/10.

BD: 6 plus years not touring this side of the world. Few more practice games couldn't be scheduled. Unknown players, Tamim's injury, Shak not batting. Was hoping "don't lose to the associates", "get to triple figures". Sarkar, Sabbir, Taskin performed. Rubel bit, Mash led. Mushi punched. Shak flashed periodically, Riyad rewrote the record books in style. Qualified for the QFs. Gave a good account for ourselves. With fielding blunders, I can't give them the grade I wanted to give them. 7/10.

SL: The greats are leaving. Sad for cricket. Sanga is just class. His post exit interview is so touchy. Mahela, can't say enough about him. Yes, he is over the hill. The bowlers weren't playing as a unit. Herath's injury changed the dynamics of the team. Lost to the three best team. I think they should have lost purposely against Scots and face India. I know it is unethical but... we are talking about maximizing the chances in getting tot the finals. 7.5/10.

Pak: Misbah is gone. Can't wait till the April series. 8 points. 7.5/10.

SA: Made it to the Semis. 5-3 overall record. Steyn a no show. Down fall. 8/10.

Ind: What a turnaround from the tri-series. At one time they had a stat in the WC, 15 catches in 15 attempts. Shami and Yadav were very good. 7 wins. 8.5/10.

Aus and NZ: The book of T_E hasn't finished yet.

The west indies crisis is more complicated than you put it. The selected no one from guyana, meanwhile guyAna just crushed everyone in the domestic first class, Bishoo and Permaul blew them away.

NZ, the most balanced team of the tournament. One weakness going into the final is lack of an experienced third seamer.
