I think among the BPL teams , Comilla, Barisal, and Sylhet have a strong and passionate fan base. They are living all over the country in large numbers, especially in Dhaka and Chittagong. If Comilla becomes a division, than the Noakhali people will be added too. Hopefully in future Comilla will be a venue also. Couple of years back I was in the stadium to watch Comilla-Barisal final. It was an electrifying atmosphere (similar to Abahani-Mohammedan match of the 70s). Tickets were sold for tk 2000 in the black market. I thoroughly enjoyed the event.

PCB won't give NOC to their centrally contracted players till Nov 17, forcing them to play in their domestic T20. Others such as Afridi and Sami will get NOC whenever they want.

More bad news for Comilla - Tamim may miss a good portion of BPL, as he will be on rehab.

Quote:
Tamim confirmed that we won’t be available from the start: “I don’t know still that how many matches I will miss in BPL. I have to be in rehab for two weeks. Then my condition will be seen again and then I will be able to say how many matches I will miss. But it is confirmed that I won’t play the first two matches.”

“My intentions are very clear. National team is my priority. It won’t be a good decision to play until I become fit again.”

He added: “BPL is a very important tournament. But there are matches in National team too. We have a big series against Sri Lanka. No matter how many matches I miss in BPL, I will play only when I become fit.”

Good news for Dhaka - Mosaddek is fit to play.

Quote:
The middle order batsman himself announced this during an interview with a reporter on Saturday: “I have no problem with my eyes now. I can return to Cricket from BPL. I am hoping that I can play the first match at Sylhet. I have started my training few days ago. Our team’s practice sessions will start from tomorrow and I will join them.”

Bopara: Mash is someone you want to play for
Quote:
Rangpur Riders’ English all-rounder Ravi Bopara has heaped praise on captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza, ahead of the fifth edition of the BPL T20, scheduled to get underway Saturday in Sylhet.

“Mash is a type of guy you want to play for. He gives 100% so you have to give 100%. It is good for any team. Nobody can be lazy with Mash. He is a good cricketer. He is a very accurate bowler, and he can smack the ball against the spinners. He has authority, which is good,” Bopara told the media in Mirpur Saturday.

“I want to win the tournament. There’s no point coming here to lose. I am playing with new players; I have played with Ziaur [Rahman] before in the 50-over competition. There are some English guys and I have worked with Tom Moody in the past. Very nice and very familiar,” he said.

“A lot depends on the pitches – if they are good we are going to have a good tournament. If they are bad then it will be interesting. We expect competition against every team, but we have got the team.

Injured Mustafizur set to miss start of BPL
Quote:
BCB's chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury said that the Grade 2 sprain has to be carefully treated to avoid a relapse. Given the severity of the injury, Mustafizur is likely to miss at least the first two weeks of the tournament.

"This is the 13th day of Mustafizur's lateral ankle injury," Chowdhury said. "We started physiotherapy yesterday, and he has improved quite a bit after the first day. The swelling has reduced. But despite clinical improvement, we will be careful about him since the scan report has shown that the injury is a Grade 2 sprain or moderate type of ankle strain. We will review him after two weeks, after which we will set the next course of management plan.

"It has been two weeks since he got injured. If he rests for another two weeks, it will be a month, which is a useful time for recovery.

"He has to give some time to get back to bowling training, which will depend on him. In total he will need 2-3 weeks, before which we won't get a completely fit Mustafizur."

This has to be the least hyped BPL here in BC.

I remember when there were threads for the fan base of individual teams. I happened to open the fan thread based on pure randomness- Rangpur Riders.

I guess the current tour in SA has turned most people away.

We need you guys and gals

Thank you. Pakistanis are not coming; so Sarfraz, Shadab, Imran Ali are not playing, correct?

We have a decent team. Post season shouldn't be out of reach.

^^ Shadab and Sarfraz will join on or after Nov 17.

Imran Ali Enam is a local player, a find from the last pacer hunt. He recently toured England with the HP squad, played against Ireland-A as well.

Recent inclusion of Michael Klinger should further boost the Titans.

BPL woos top players to add glamour

The fifth edition of Bangladesh Premier League will see some extra glamour with the inclusion of some of the world’s most prominent Twenty20 stars, who will make their debut in the tournament this year.

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga, New Zealand batsman Brendon McCullum, England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler have dominated franchise-based Twenty20 cricket across the world but never played in BPL previously.
They will join respected names in world cricket like Pakistan’s Sarfraz Ahmed, Australian batsman Chris Lynn, New Zealander Luke Ronchi, South Africa’s Rillee Rousow, Kyle Abbott and West Indies’s Samuel Badree as BPL first timers.

Some upcoming Pakistani stars like top-ranked one-day international bowler Hassan Ali, all-rounder Fahim Ashraf, Champions Trophy hero Fakhar Zaman and consistent batsman Babar Azam are also expected to make their BPL debut this season.

With five foreign players per team, and with so many good players coming here because of cancellation of Global T20, this BPL should be at another level from previous versions. Hathuru will not get a better chance to assess our domestic players. I hope Papon will force him to watch the tourny this time.

My main interest will be to see which coach is successful in any department and hope BCB snipes him into our setup, we're in a dire need.

As for local players shining (besides permanent ones) in the t20 format I'll feel bad for them since our board is too cheap to include t20 specialists in our squads and hope to save money by using players from ODI/Test team when they clearly have no idea how to play the game (ex. Kayes, Mushfiq). We saw how good Maruf was last season yet never got a spot or a chance to play in the national team.

Team preview 3 (Khulna, Sylhet and Chittagong)

Khulna Titans

After their lucky stint last season, they are back and looks like they are planning to go fractionally harder to go for the title. They certainly dont have the best possible team on paper but they are doing some things right. Apart from retaining the players that performed, they added a handful of foreign players that are definitely underdogs. Their biggest signing Chris Lynn unfortunately pulled out due to injury which would have given them a huge boost but they got some pretty handy players. They have Shadab Khan who is arguibly one of the most exciting spinners in the world right now. Shadab partnering with the veteran Mosharraf Rubel could be 8 overs of effective spin attack. They picked up Chadwick Walton who was the highest scorer in this years CPL and they also picked Carlos Brathwaite who had a solid CPL stint too with the ball. Their local pool once again is on the average side but they some of the young guys like Nazmul, Saif, Afif have a sky high ceiling so it would be interesting to see how they perform. batting was a huge worry last season and seems like they havent really gone after many local talent for that department. Lucky for Khulna, they can field 5 foreign players this year and stacking up that batting order with players like Walton, Klinger, Malan, Prasanna, Rossow wont be a problem. With Mahela, Alfanso, Bashar on charge, they might just pull it off!

Khulna Squad
Mahmudullah (Icon), Carlos Brathwaite, Muktar Ali, Abu Jayed, Shehan Jayasuriya, Imran Ali, Benny Howell, Shafiul Islam, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Jofra Chioke Archer, Afif Hossain, Dhiman Ghosh, Chadwick Walton, Shadab Khan, Yasir Ali, Seekkuge Prasanna, Dawid Malan, Junaid Khan, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Kyle Abbott, Saif Hassan, Rilee Rossouw, Mosharraf Hossain, Ariful Haque, Michael Klinger

Sylhet Sixers
A new player in the game and so far they have done well with the squad selection. Again, they dont look like contenders on paper but unlike Khulna, they picked some good local players. Sabbir, Nasir, Sohan, Taijul, Rabbi are all effective players and it looks like Sylhet wont have to worry about their 6 local player quota. Its their foreign recruitment list that doesnt look as promising. Babar, Santokie, Plunkett, Whitely, Tharanga, Usman are decent signings but probably not enough to cause some serious damage. Guess it will be upto the locals who are definitely capable of bring some Ws by themselves!

Sylhet squad
Sabbir Rahman, Babar Azam, Chaturanga de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Nasir Hossain, Nurul Hasan, Nabil Samad. Ghulam Mudassar, Mohammad Sharif, Imtiaz Hossain, Sharifullah, Krishmar Santokie, Usman Khan, Barry McCarthy. Andre Fletcher, Davy Jacobs, Liam Plunkett, Ross Whiteley, Wanidu Hasaranga, Taijul Islam, Abul Hasan, Shuvagata Hom, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Upal Tharanga

Chittagong Vikings

I guess when they wanted to discontinue their franchise, they really meant it! The transfer to the new owner wouldve benefited Chittagong as this squad is clearly the weakest in the tournament. Their only edge is a decent set of local players with the likes of Soumya, Anamul, Subhashis, Alauddin, Taskin, Sanzamul. But some of these players very inconsistent and their performance curve could end up on extreme ends. Their foreign pool, well lets just say it exists! Jeevan, Reece, Dawson, Ronchi, Misbah, Blackwood are decent players but most of them wouldnt be anyones top picks for T20 games. Safe to say, Vikings wont be winning any title this year unless the locals perform exceptionally well and consistently.

Chittagong squad
Soumya Sarkar, Luis Reece, Liam Dawson, Sunzamul Islam, Al-Amin, Alauddin Babu, Tanbir Hayder, Irfan Sukkur, Naeem Hasan, Yasir Arafat, Misbah-ul-Haq, Luke Ronchi, Jermaine Blackwood, Sikandar Raza, Jeevan Mendis, Najibullah Zadran, Anamul Haque, Taskin Ahmed, Subashis Roy

Taijul Islam? . He is the least player am looking towards. Isn’t Kane Williamson meant to be in the sixers side?

Chittagong Vikings are hardly active making any noises pre to the start of BPL 5, they have hardly been active in regards to promos etc. 2nd City will finish as the last city in the table

Question:

Is Shaheen Afradi the Pakistan medium pace bowler who has only played 2 FC matches to date? Or is he a BD local player unknown?

akle, this may answer your question -

Shaheen Afridi: the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy's new sensation
Quote:
What is so special about him?

His settled action, his game awareness and his inswinger with the new ball. According to Mushtaq Ahmed, who discovered him at U-16 level, his fitness and height as a fast bowler are his best attributes. He is also handy with the bat in the lower order, and his big-hitting ability is an attractive feature. "He has great cricketing temperament and at a young was making a lot of sense with his field positions," Mushtaq said. "His action is pretty repeatable and we didn't really bother to work on it. It's repeatable and that is what a coach wants to have in his bowler. He listens and picks things up very quickly."

How does he already have a BPL deal?

He was handled by a sports management company based in Lahore. His agent Talha Aisham emailed Dhaka Dynamites videos of Shaheen's bowling, and asked if they would be interested in signing him. They agreed, subject to a formal endorsement from Mushtaq, who is the Pakistan NCA head coach. Both Mushtaq and captain Kumar Sangakkara exchanged emails, and the deal was locked in for two years starting from 2017 for a sum of around Rs 1 crore.

Thanks Eshen. I looked at his record and thought that it was kinda odd to recruit someone with that less of an experience. But he look like he can genuinely trouble the batsmen. Hope to see him play a few games or more in this tournament.
