Root gets out too often after 50 and before 100. England’s inexperienced batsmen having a bit of trouble now, although Aussies saved by Smith.

Must be nice for Smith to give the ball to Starc and blow the tail away

"David Warner potentially sacrificed a century to help Cameron Bancroft grow"

There was really only one way the equation was supposed to play out.

David Warner resuming on 60 not out, Cameron Bancroft on 51. The fifth day, with 56 runs needed for a foregone win.

In any familiar world, the aggressive Warner would monopolise scoring and smash a hundred, while the patient, quiet, junior partner blocked the odd ball at the other end.

Except that isn't what happened at all.

Warner deliberately avoided it. Instead of gobbling the available runs, he put himself on rations, then fed his nest-mate bit by bit so the youngster would grow up big and strong.

Ashes 2017: When Jonny Bairstow met Cameron Bancroft, 'He just greeted me with a headbutt'

Australian debutant Cameron Bancroft says England's Jonny Bairstow greeted him with a headbutt in a Perth bar earlier this month before they continued drinking for the rest of the night.

"I got into a very amicable conversation with Jonny. He just greeted me with a headbutt," Bancroft said.

"I was expecting a handshake, it wasn't the greeting of choice that I expected. There was certainly no malice in it and we continued having a very good conversation for the rest of the evening.

"At the time he said sorry. For me personally it was just weird, I didn't see it coming. He says hello to people very differently to others.

"He connected with my head with a force that made me think that's a bit weird."

The controversy kicked off on Sunday when Australian vice-captain David Warner was picked up on the stump microphone at the Gabba telling an England player: "You shouldn't headbutt our mates".

This has produced lots of laughter in the post match press conference yesterday.

England aren't out of this Test match. By Smith not being brave enough to follow on (Australia had all the momentum and we lost it), we're one Root-masterclass away from the most humiliating defeat.

I'd say Aus need 3 wickets in the first session tomorrow.

Lost art Cleaning up the tail

Cummins and Lyon have been the best Aussie bowlers but Starc is gonna end up with the best figures.

England miss Stokes, there isn't a gulf in class between the 2 sides. England have had there chances in the 1st two tests. I think Moeen's finger injury is also big

Just like England, Mas_Uk has disappeared.

England need to book a flight, they are really out of touch in Australia.

I will write to Cricket Australia and recommend them to field an Australian A or Cricket XI side. Or maybe the current Sheffield shield champions can take on this hapless side.

No clue but they said it involves a World Cup winning all rounder so I’m thinking either symonds or watson (did he win a World Cup?)

Starc with the breakthrough. Cook falls cheaply.

Stoneman batting at over a 100 SR. At one point,he hit Starc for 3 consecutive boundaries.

Interesting.
