Default ***U-19 Age problem, real or fake?***

Congratulation to Afghanistan U-19 team for winning the U-19 Asia Cup. When I tweeted that, I had some of our BD fans, telling me to calm down. I posted something like this on https://twitter.com/Bangla13c/status/932183241452408832

Quote:
Just imagine if Afghanistan had the cricket infrastructure like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or even Bangladesh, they would have become a top rank team in the world.
They sent me pictures of Afghanistan players saying tell me is this guy 19 years old?

so I thought of opening this thread. Here is my view point.

Most Afghan players are very strong, built and physically tall. When they are kids, some of them look like mens. They are not like the usual sub continent type of teenagers, usually average or short height, not so built etc. I think it is unfair to always say they are using older players, unless of course you have concrete evidence. in my view they are just like that.

What do you guys think? Is there any real way to verify the age? especially in sub continent where you could make fake birth certificates? etc

tbh that guy looks more 19 than rashid khan..anyway what is the process of ICC to verify these players? do they go by their country's birth document only? if so than this is not right for Our country, I dont know others so I cant speak for other contries

if for our under 19 team we only go with birth certificate/other certificates most of our players are 2 years older

I don't think there is any other way to verify peoples age other than to trust the documentation provided by the respective country e.g. birth certificates/passport.

If anyone does know any other way, would be happy to know

any document can be rigged, this should not be the only way, there should be a scientific way to verify someone's age.

how does fifa do it?

Quote:
As for the test itself, the Tanner-Whitehouse test or the TW-3 test is in place to detect age-fraud. It involves an MRI scan of the distal radius, or the wrist bone, and measure the level of fusion there. This distal radius fusion can verify the player’s claim of being younger than 17 years, as the test distinguishes those who are above the age of 17.
http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/23...tch-age-frauds

But on the other hand, there have been counter arguments saying 'no scientific test' to prevent age fraud.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...ent-age-fraud/

But overall, Fifa have done much more to tackle age fraud than ICC has done.

Our best cricketer in the tournament in fact was 2 and half years older. I don't think it matters much though..

@SportingBD

If you have someone insider working for the doctor, you can easily switch the test results of MRI scan of Tanner-Whitehouse test too...

Hmmm. Nothing seems clear cut.

It does not make sense to me why ICC is not implementing the same standard FIFA have. They don't care for age group cricket as much?

Could it be something to do with cost saving? personally I doubt it.

Maybe is quite expensive to implement those scientific age verification methods.

^^ That would be my guess too. If I remember correctly, they were doing a similar test using X-ray. I guess it was not that accurate, and the MRI based test is not that simple or cheap.

This test is more expensive than a doping one?

^^ Doping test is required for all international sports associations, age testing is not. May be this is one reason ICC/BCCI is not pressing hard for cricket to be included in Olympic, as this sort of standard has to be implemented for it.

^^ well, it's seems as if this is a grassroots problem. Similar to the way bowling actions(illegal) are allowed to give false hope to players.

This will not grow the game. I'd say the best thing to do is perhaps compare ages of a typical Afghani to someone from another part of the world. One of them will look more mature than the other. I think this is in the genes, looking older than their age.

If you think age corruption is an issue, you should see the under 15 that try to claim asylum in Europe.

As for the Afghans, don't think you need whole lot of tests, many of those guys are clearly in their twenties -

Afghanistan people have gone through hell. This win will bring alot of joy to their country. Their players might have hidden their true age but none of the officials or competing boards are objecting. I am just glad Pakistan didn’t pick up the trophy.
