Default International Cricket Needs a Left-Handed Batsman.

Is it me? Or is the modern game packed with Righthand batsmen?

At least, the top batsmen in world cricket are all righties...

Root
Smith
Kane
Virat
Babar
Kusal
Kraigg
Shai
Mushy

There's only a handful of lefties...
Cook and Gayle are almost finish with their careers
There is mominul, who might be the best leftie in the business (this might be up for debate)
Shaun Marsh might not recreate ashes form?

Do you agree with me? And share my thoughts?

Or am I just making a mountain out of a molehill?

because right hand dominance is the norm in nature.

these days we tend to complain about everything. why not enough of this or that.

I'm a leftie....in handwriting and using a knife

Otherwise, I do almost every other thing with my right hand

What percent of the world are left handed? Isn't it only like 5-10%? If anything, there might be over representation.

Lots of right handers, for example Gayle and Warner, actually use left hand stance. They prefer their dominant hand on top of the bat handle rather than at bottom.

This article was published couple of years ago -

Cricketers have been holding their bats wrong, say scientists
Quote:
Gayle and David Warner who are starring in the T20 World Cup for the West Indies and Australia respectively are devastating strikers of a cricket ball yet both bat left-handed - even though they are naturally right handed.

England's Eoin Morgan and Stokes, whose 258 in Cape Town this year was the second fastest double century in the history of Test cricket, also fit the bill.

All four are among some of the greatest left-handers of recent times who have used a reversed stance.

These include Brian Lara, Clive Lloyd, David Gower, Adam Gilchrist, Alistair Cook, Michael Hussey, Kumar Sangakkara and Matthew Hayden - all actually right-hand dominant in everyday life.

The reversed-stance advantage also extends to people who are left-hand dominant but bat right-handed - with famous examples including Michael Clarke, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Adam Voges.

Even Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, widely-considered as one of the best batsmen of the modern era, batted and bowled right-handed but is known to write with his left hand.

The reason for their success seems to lie in a reversed stance providing a technical advantage by placing the dominant hand at the top rather than the bottom of the bat handle.

Dr David Mann, a scientist in human movement at VU University in Amsterdam, said: "The top hand is typically responsible for controlling and guiding the path of the bat to hit the ball so it appears to be an advantage for the dominant hand to perform this role.

"The results suggest by teaching batsmen to use a conventional stance coaches may be inadvertently teaching players to bat 'back-to-front' and could be harming their players' chances of developing expertise.

"By adopting the conventional stance batsmen may have been unintentionally taught to bat 'back-to-front' and might not have maximized their potential in the game."

Full list of players currently competing in the ICC T20 World Cup who bat using a reversed stance:

Australia:
David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Aaron Finch, James Faulkner, Josh Hazlewood

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Abu Hider, Taskin Ahmed

England: Eoin Morgan, Moeein Ali, Liam Dawson, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley

India: Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, Ashish Nehra

New Zealand: Colin Munro, Trent Boult, Henry Nicolls

Pakistan: Sharjeel Khan, Wahab Riaz, Mohammed Irfan

South Africa: JP Duminy, David Miller, Rilee Rossouw, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada

Sri Lanka: Thisara Perera, Lahiru Thirimanne, Shehan Jayasuriya

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Elvin Lewis
My initial post was in response to Yankees saying left handers are overly represented in cricket. As you can see most of those batsmen with left hand stance are actually right handers with reverse stance.

Seems unimpressive compared to Lara, Ganguly, Saeed Anwar, Jaysuria, Kirsten, Hayden, Langer, Fleming of the previous era. But perhaps i dont follow cricket as much these days to appreciate the new players

^^ Warner is definitely better than likes of Kirsten or Langer. De Kock prolly also can do better if he focus on his batting alone.

I will rate Shakib higher than Jaya, as a batsman alone.

Most players usually place their dominant hand at the bottom of the handle and less dominant hand below. Now, the dominant hand usually has better control and more power than the less dominant one.

Now going back to batting, when you are playing shots, its your lower hand which is supposed to help to turn and twist the ball. The top hand acts like a pivot held tightly which eventually helps the bat swing more properly because you are not going to grip the bottom handle too hard with bottom hand which would restrict freedom of movement.

That means - top hand is more for support and power, and bottom hand more for control.

Now, some folks do use the dominant hand as top handle though, what this allows is to get more power but eventually lose their control on bat movement because their weaker hand is placed at the bottom.

However, even though only 10% of the population is left handed. We see a lot of left handed batsman. Batting left handed gives you an advantage over RHB at a young age because you have a different style and thus teams want to pick you. A left is pretty good at tackling the SLA and Leggies that bother RHB plus the L/R combo too. One more thing, at a young age, bowlers are very uncomfortable bowling to LHB because they mostly bowled to RHB and eventually you see a lot of runs easily scored by the lefties, and also some extras.

You see a lot of Right handed people batting left handed. But those who are left handed usually bowl and bat left handed,

ex-
Shakib
Sunzamul
Taijul
Mustafiz
Mominul
-from current side

Jadeja, Jayasuria, Corey anderson are some examples too.

However, bowling with your non dominant hand is much more difficult. Thats why you see Stokes, Soumya, Gayle bowls with their right hand. Also, when it comes to throwing, everyone definitely uses their right hand.

International cricket needs more right arn spinners. Left arm leggies. Right arm leggies.

I’m pace bowler when I used to play, can bowl off and leg spin. Tbh if I had to choose which one to take forward it be leg spin. So much demand for it plus you don’t get injured as much like a pace bowler. Why waste all that energy, effort, running in bowling on dead tracks, when you can bowl spin from few yards and have a longer injury free career!
