Default The Pace Hunt Myopia

It seems that recently everyone who is capable of having an opinion on Bangladeshi Cricket (and many who aren't) seem to have the opinion that the problems with our bowling dept. can simply be fixed if we can acquire some bowlers who can bowl 'at or more than 90 miles an hour'. Yet if you think about it, how many of the top pace bowlers in the world regularly, if ever, bowl at those speeds? Out of the 100 or so pace bowlers who have played test cricket over the last 10 years maybe a dozen have bowled at that level. Of the current batch of fast bowlers, maybe 5 strive to bowl at those speeds. A great many bowlers take wickets bowling at lower speeds. Look at bowlers like Zoysa, Vaas, McGrath, Pathan....none of these bowlers go for sheer pace, yet they are very successful. Instead of this obsession with speed, we should concentrate on bowlers who have decent speed but can swing the ball while controlling their line and length. I can guarantee that this approach will get us many more wickets than concentrating just on speed.

Yes, agree there. Talking about bowlers without pace here is one guy we might meet soon in England. Cricinfo did a analysis, impressive stats. Cricinfo

His pace of around 125kmph will hardly scare batsmen

Apparently there is unlike McGrath, Pollock doesn't enjoy bowling to left-handers. And, if the numbers are anything to go by, it isn't only a slight dislike he absolutely abhors bowling to them
A left handed opener against this guy would be useful.

Ok , it looks like theres been a misunderstanding. I dont think anyone wanted a bowler who could constantly bowl at 90mph but a bowler who can reach that speed. We have a fairly accurate bowling attack what we need now is a bowler who can unsettle the batsmen with a few quicker ones (thats why mashrafee is so useful). You see, the faster that bowlers are , the more they can get away with being inaccurate. Look at Shoaib Akhtar for example, until he halved his run up he was far less accurate than even bd bowlers but he is still rated number 8 in the world...

And how many matches has he played with his shortened runup?
