Default Preliminary Squad of 21: No Rajjak or Sharif

For the first time EVER I'm having a big dispute about selection board's decision. Debut of Rajjak raj was the only positive side of the entire Asia Cup. After ending all the controversy about his bowling action i do not see any reason to keep him out of the squad, specially when rana is in such a off form. He could be great replace for rana and a good help for rafique.

There is no sharif either. Taking him into the 14 men squad could be, just could be too much to ask for since he is out of play for such a long time. but to know how good is his comeback, he could use a place in 21's team.

Alok has been called back. what did he do since he got out of the team that deserve a call back? Unless he his forced to make his way to national team, he'll never come back to his original form. why bother performing when free ride is confirmed! And same goes for hannan. until these player are made to realize that performance is the only way to stay in team, there is no hope.

Then again faisal. But probably he could come useful in dhaka pitch.

sujon is still in the team without facing deciplinary board. after sending back rafique from Zim for such event before such a crutial match, sujon should have been banned for at least a year.

apart from that team is ok (already too much problem though)

01. Habibul Bashar
02. Rajin Saleh
03. Khaled Mahmud
04. Khaled Masud
05. Javed Omar
06. Mushfiq Babu
07. Hannan Sharkar
08. Alok Kapali
09. Mohammad Asharaful
10. Mohammad Rafique
11. Manjarul Rana
12. Tapash Baiysha
13. Faisal Hossain
14. Alamgir Kabir
15. Masrafe Murtaza
16. Enamul Jr.
17. Samsul Hossain
18. Tareq Aziz
19. Nafis Iqbal
20. Aftab Ahmed
21. Talha Jubair

What confusing is, bangladesher khela is saying that all 14 member of england tour is here. Obviously, Nazmul Hossain is not here. Does that mean that 17. Samsul Hossain is actually Nazmul hossain (they both are in u19 team and i belive both are 16).

AgentSmith. Razzak needs to work on his action bit more , hence out of this tour. As for Sharif, he is out of cricket more than two years and just recently started to bowl with 90-100% ability. Even world class bowlers would have struggled to come back to national team after such lengthy lay off due to injury.

I think team selection is perfectly alright and yes that includes KM. Strong chances are KM and Talha would be considered only for ODIs. Faisal scored heavily in domestic league last few seasons. Who else you would consider then? Al-Shaharier / Sanwar Hussian? I think, Bidyut is bit unlucky ( deciplinery reason?). And won't worry, we'll get rid of Alamgir Kabir when final 15 will be selected.

DailyStar has more details:

http://www.thedailystar.net/2004/09/24/d40924040134.htm

Their list:

Habibul Bashar, Rajin saleh, Khaled Mashud, Khaled Mahmud, Javed Omar, Mushfiqur Rahman, Hannan sarkar, Alok Kapali, Mohammad Ashraful, Mohammed Rafique, Manjarul Islam, Tapash Baisya, Faisal Hossain, Alamgir Kabir, Mashrafee Bin Mortuza, Enamul Haque Junior, Nazmul Hossain, Tareq Aziz, Nafees Iqbal, Aftab Ahmed and Talha Jubair.

So AgentSmith's surmise was right: Bangladesher Khela had a typo with Nazmul.

Regarding Razzaq - how many specialist spinners can we bring on to the 21:

Rafique, Enamul Jr, Rana, Raj ..... Difficult choice... But Raj will be back in the fold soon because I believe Rafique is aging out - he has lost a lot of his potency.. flatter faster balls than the spin he used to

Squad is still too young, where are the experienced players, you can't win with youngster's. What happend to Mehrab Hossain Opee, Al Sharyiar Rokon, Shariar Hossain Bidduyt, these 3 must all be in their mid to late 20's now and are experienced enough to take on the role of solid top order batsman. Good to see Hannan back, with all his faults he is a better opener than Ashraful(he should come in to bat at number 4 or 5).

I would opt for Rajjak Raj over Enamul & Rana, even Rafique in future...

I would tend to agree for the future....

Right now I think our brittle batting helped in the decision (along with the action remedy that Raj needs to take) - both enamul and rana can bat a bit.

At present, performance matters more than talent or experience, I guess.

Opee is reportedly highly undisciplined and Rokon's place was challenged by a few in the past; with Nafees and Aftab around, he doesn't seem to stand any chances now.

Bidduyt has been with the HP unit after recovering from the knee injury. Improvement is the key for him to claim a spot.

Kapali, on the other hand, is the most lucky person I think.

My guess for final 14 (for Test Series).

With the assumption that every one is healthy, the 1st 12 slots looks like lock:

1. Javed
2. Nafiz
3. Bashar
4. Ashraful
5. Aftab
6. Rajin
7. Pilot
8. Mushfiq
9. Rafiq
10. Masrafe
11. Tapash
12. Nazmul

For #13 slot: Rana and Enamul will fight for this slot.

For #14 slot: Hannan, Alok and Faisal will fight for this slot.

I don't think Chacha or Talha will be selected in final 14 for test match.

i really wished that razzak could have been on the squad...i think its messed up that he got called for action...the biomechanic in england said that his action was fine and still he has to work something. whatever the case, razzak will be back for the next series against india/zim/SL or whoever we play. after this razzak should not have any questions about his action.

razzak is the only guy we missed...i think SL has proved that you can play and win with many spinners, especially on home pitches. its our batting and our batting alone that will create any problems for us.

good to see that hannan and alok are back...i believe alok hit 89* at home agianst the WI...lets hope hannan and javed bring stability and that nafis, ash, and rajin regain good form.

Surprise to see Kapali again. I thought he was on vacation or something. Anyway, they should have included monju Islam as well. he is quite useful bowler when it comes to economy especially in ODI.

guys there is no gurantee that razzak raj won't fizzle out like everyone else before him. only a few months ago rana was supposed to be the next allrounder, opener, silver bullet.

and I have a question to those fans who keep writing about mohammad sharif. how many of you have actually seen him play, either in person or in a match? he had a very brief career, was not that spectacular, but had some pace and supposedly could swing. Is that enough to walk into a test side after a two year layoff? Even he would not want to do that, I am sure he will want to play some domestic cricket first. Look at the South Africans - they are returning home for a month of domestic cricket before their next series, and the hope is the current players knock the socks off the rest of the league and regain their form. All these one hit wonders that make up the Bangladesh team - do any of them blow away even the rest of the competition in Bangladesh? If not, then why are they on the test team? I don't know where I am going with this other than to say Greenidge was right, all our players are way too soft. And none of them is a silver bullet yet, although I have some hope for a Nafis or Mashrafee type of player. the rest will eventually have to go.

I dont thik if Bowlers like Mashrafee, Tapah & Nazmul play.. monju has any sort of chance.
This trio-combination looks fine to me!

Nazmul has proved his sharpness... lets see if he can keep his consistancy series-to-series.

I must say i am disappointed with this selection. There is no variation in the bowling 3 left arm spinners in the squad but no offspinner. Even in the fast bowling department talha, aziz, kabir are all similar bowlers. A left arm pacer would have helped, what's happened to Shafaq al-Zabir who was a promosing left hand fast bowler and played in the U19 world cup in new zealand.

Very disappointed that Bulbul is not in the squad as his experience would have helped the youngsters.

I think the selection is ok except the inclusion of Alok and Kabir.

For a comeback to the National Team Alok should had it justified by his performance as Ashraf did it. I don't understand on which basis he was selected again. His recent performance is not in his favour. Aminul Islam and Shahriar Hossain would have been better choice then Alok, even if this choice is for only ODIs.
Do you remember what Tagore told,' You cannot call a piece of wood fire, until it burns and makes flame'. We should not judge by "talent" until it is justified by "performance". I believe all the cricketer at this level are talented, that does not mean that everybody should get chance.
I am a little disappointed for not having the name of Aminul Islam. Although it doesn't matter for the home series, as you can include any player just before the test starts. I hope that our selector should consider him as soon as he will be available in Dhaka in the first week of October.

I hope Hannan can open again with J. Omar. His best series performance was against the Aussies in Australia with his carrier best average 43 runs per innings. let's assume that he has overcome his problems against in-swingers.

Sam Bhai. I agree with you mostly, apart from Aminul Islam bit. don't get me wrong. I believe Aminul Islam would not do worse than what the current bunch of youngsters are doing - pathetic to describe it best. But i strongly doubt that he would do any wonder.

As for Kapali, i want to believe that he was considered for his leg-spin ability more than his batting ability which has been shambolic quite a while. Kaps has a test hattrick in his bag and in ideal world should be a player of Afridi/S. Malik's mould, not literally but the role they play for the team i.e. 10 overs bowling in ODI and 'bits 'n pieces' in test (!) matches when the condotion is spin friendly. The only reason we expect true batsmanship from Kaps is our top order is utterly hapless. So as soon as we noticed his batting 'capability' we thought he is our messiah. And then it got complecated further as he started to concentrate on batting and failed quite a few occasions mainly due to his lack of temperament. But he's been pushed to take a role that he was not prepared at all (international cricket isn't a place to help prepare players!) Eventually, for the time being, we lost service of a decent leg-spinner who is more than useful with bat.

Shahrier Hussain is truly unlucky. Was he left out only because the selectors didn't want to pick up more than 3 openers? At some point, may be in the next series given one of the openers would fail in this series, I would like to see him back to the team.

I quite liked your team, obviously Aminul Islam would not make it anyway. I would swap his place with Rajin Saleh in test matches and Rana/Kaps in ODIs.
