Bangladesh confident ahead of one-day series

Rabeed Imam

January 19, 2005

Brimming with confidence a day after a first-ever Test series triumph, Bangladesh head into their ODI series against Zimbabwe aiming for the maximum. The first of five matches starts on Thursday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium and, during a light practice session ahead of the match, Bangladesh's captain, Habibul Bashar said a clean sweep was well within their grasp.

"It is very difficult for the boys to shift their concentration to the shorter version within a day," said Bashar. "But I must say we are very confident of keeping the momentum going. We want a clean sweep in the series."

Bashar was, however, fully aware that Zimbabwe would pose more of a threat in the abridged version of the game, as they are more adapted to ODIs than to Tests. "They have some good allrounders and I think another plus point is their athletic fielding," he said. "We have to be at our best to make another history. That is why it is important to set the tune from the first match."

Bangladesh have never won a one-day series but their captain felt that conviction before this particular series was at a higher level than ever before: "I think we are now fully capable of handling any kind of pressure. The first Test win was a real morale booster for us and the fight back in the second Test completely changed our attitude."

Bangladesh left out Test series hero Enamul Haque Jr. and fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza from their 14 for Thursday's game. Mashrafe has been rested after he played through back pain in the second Test. Abdur Razzaq, a 22-year-old left-arm spinner who tormented Zimbabwe A during their tour to Bangladesh last year, was preferred to Enamul - who is yet to make his ODI debut. Razzaq, who appeared in five matches in the Asia Cup, comes back into the side after correcting his action which was reported during that tournament.

Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu was upbeat about his side's prospects in a form of cricket they are more comfortable with: "I don't agree that they (Bangladesh) finished the Test series with an upper-hand," said Taibu, who led by example in the Tests. "We dominated the second match and they had to ensure draw from behind. I am happy that our young side is improving in every game.

"We will go for a win and I believe my young side is very much capable and determined to pull it off. I think we are a much better one-day side because we have some quality allrounders."

Taibu, the Zimbabwe captain, said that they would take inspiration from the ODI series against England at home in November last year: "Considering our strength, we had a good series against England and I am sure it will help us to play better cricket against Bangladesh. We played four one-day matches against a strong England and in every match we showed our potential."

Zimbabwe's coach Phil Simmons expressed his displeasure at the tight scheduling. "I'm not happy with a day's break before another series which is a totally different ball game. It is not ideal for players," said Simmons, the former West Indies opener.

Zimbabwe's preparations have been slightly hampered by the news of an injury to allrounder Elton Chigumbura. The 18 year-old was a live-wire in the Test series, and starred for his team in the Champions Trophy last September: his loss would be a big blow to the side.

Can't understnd, how in the world we want to make do with only 5 specialist batsman!!!! (assuming this is the team)

with due respect, Rana is just not good enough to be at 6. It is such an important postion..... and needs some skills, Rana has shown a lot of guts.. not sure about the skills though....

Australia, arguably the best one day side plays with no less than 7 specialist batsman.. they have the liberty of having a WK batsman and one genuine allrounder in Symonds.. even though that 10 over is divided among 3 (lehmann, clark and symonds)..... and we are playing with 5 batsman, 5 bowlers (assuming Rana is mainly bowler).. Who plays with 5 specialist bowlers these days? especially, when we have the likes aftab, rajin, ashraful's more than useful bowling!!!!! Against India we had rafique coming in early as a pinch-hitter..can't see that option.. In fact without rafique and Mashrafi.. lower order looks thin in both accumulating or accelarating.....

if they dont play alok....that'd be as big a mistake as the "shanto" incident.

I donot think this is the team. Anyway our specialist batsman always score less run then our specialist bowler.

Hopefully this is not the team.
Without Rafiq and Mashrafee we don't have the tail that we needed so many times.

BD will win this series... Zimbabwe went from mediocre to nothing... serves them right for being racist. Without Heath Streak and other whites, they truly are the cricket minnows... not BD.

I think Rana should be replaced by Alok to make the batting stronger.
Ash and Aftab can share 10 overs between them.

Bangladesh Playing XI I want:

Nafis Iqbal,
Rajin Saleh,
Habibul Bashar
Mohammad Ashraful,
Aftab Ahmed,
Alok Kapali
Khaled Mashud,
Khaled Mahmud,
Abdur Razzak,
Tapash Baisya,
Nazmul Hossain

I think that is what it will be pretty sure of that, I think 4 front line bowlers of Tapash, Nazmul, Mahmud and Razzaq is enough with Rajin, Alok, Ash, and Aftab should be more than enough for support. Cant wait to see Rafique and Mashrafe back more for than batting than bowling.

I defo wanna see enamul make his debut at some point and I would like to may be if we 4-0 up see Shahdat may be make debut ?

Alok should be in instead of Rana!

We have 5 bowlers:
Aftab Ahmed,
Khaled Mahmud,
Abdur Razzak,
Tapash Baisya,
Nazmul Hossain

Why would we need Rana!?
Alok, Ashraful, Rajin can share some overs with others who sucks!

Aftab is a part-time bowler. You can't expect him to bowl 10 overs in an ODI unless he is having a very good day. As you said, there will be some sharing between Aftab, Ash, Aok and Rajin.

Remember Rana became MOM in a match against the Zimbabwe A team.
in addition to his bowling abilty, Rana scores more runs than out of form Kapali.

Kapali need some more time to prove his form. I don't want to take the risk to take him in a team where we already missing our top players. I would take him to the team when we will have Mashrafee, Rafiq in the team. So that even if he flops these two hard hitters can save.

well i agree rana scored more runs than alok but one thing is there for sure... aloks class is a lot better than rana and a batsman like him can change a whole ballgame if he can click....without rafiq and masri...we need a batsman in number 6....not an allrounder...

I wish Chacha to be kept out this time. He has already given a lot to our cricket and now we should give him a respectful farewell.

This is the best time (against this Zimbabwe) we should start with a standard (without any 'jora-tali') ODI team for now onwards.

So the 1st ODI squad should be:

1) Nafis
2) Rajin
3) Bashar
4) Ashraful
5) Aftab
6) Alok
7) Rana
8) Mashud
9) Tapash
10) Nazmul
11) Enamul/Razzak

We have Tapash+Nazmul+Aftab for pace, Enamul+Rana for spin and the part timers from Alok, Ashraf and Rajin. Be sure that Zimbabwe has distinct weakness in spin.
