according to banglar_darbesh's BD Cricket Dictionary, Golam Rahman Himel might as well turn out to be a good example of a "consistent" player, who is "capable of playing a few fluke innings in regular intervals".

Why didn't Golam Rahman bat in the 2nd innings? After scoring the century. I think he came 5th down after he scored his first century. Why? Is he weak or something?

I saw that too. My theories are:

1) It's pretty hot in dhaka right now and after his 1st innings he was cramped/injured?

2) He's an accumulator and Sylhet needed quick runs. You'll see the strike rate much migher of those who were elevated.

After the total collapse of the non-Golams of Sylhet in the 1st innings they couldn't have wanted to chase 313 in 73 overs. Too hard.

Why is he cramping up. (if)

Its not summer time. He needs conditioning training probably.

Excellent! He is obviously a player to watch out for! We could really do with a lefty opener in the national team and this kid seems to have a hunger for runs. I am tempted to even consider him for the England tour, atleast to include him in the pre-tour camp. But then I would have to break two of my own rules, firstly to not attach too much value to NCL batting performances and secondly to not rush young players into the national team!

He is running away with the NCL highest run title and he is only 17. And Lefty. He seems to have the temperament of Gullu. I am salivating.

I would like to know what Khaled Mahmud thinks of him after today's innings.

Don't be stuck with your rules all the time. Rules and made to be broken....

Now whether he is a real deal or not, we will not know unless we assign him with a new challenge.

Holy Maco.

I just went through game by game and his numbers and consistency really jumps out at you.

This kid can't be a fluke. Amazing temperament. He is not one of those players who inflate their stat against bad bowling or on hot days. He is even better when he is playing the best bowling. Scored a 160 surviving 127 overs agains Rafiq, Talha, Mahmud, Ashraful, Anwar H.Monir, Arafat. Played good innings in every game except one.

Has anyone seen him play? Could we get some expert opinions hers.

I am still not in favor of including him in England tour. He should be included in England bound A team even if he will not score any 50 in the next few matches of this NCL.

I agree. Its better to take him up in steps. Fazal, the rules are there specifically to avoid situations like these, when a player scores a lot of runs and we all get really excited and want him in the national team straight away, what I usually refer to as the Pakistani aproach. But look at what happened with Faisal Hussain last year.

When we identify a talented player early, the aproach should be to groom him and make him ready for the highest standard so that when he does make it into Test cricket, he can adapt quickly and have a long and successful career. We don't want to thrust them into Test cricket at the age of 16 because we got impatient and see more talent go to waste!

bit off topic - was chatting with my paki house mate last night and stuff about the hpu and youngster grooming came up. he was astonished that bangladesh has such a systematic approach (imo it could be a lot better) to the development of its talents whereas in pakistan they have to do everything on their own, are brought into the team before maturing enough and eventually kicked out for good after only a handful of failures.

Shams,
I am not disagreeing with your approach in principle and agree what you are saying. However I feel that there should be room for exception. It can be exceptional talent with exceptional maturity, lack of established player in national team, lack of team-a, u-19 team activities during that time frame to keep upcoming talent busy, etc, etc.

As long as we are identifying and grooming the talent, challenging him with higher level of competition in a well planned step by step approach, most of the fans should be ok with that. What we don't want to see is just shut him down completely with a requirement that he needs to repeat in domestic league year after year before giving him another chance to the next level. Now that next level may be team-a, u-19 or just playing in warm-up matches for national team. The good thing is that, now we have more activities in u-19 and team-a. Thatís good.

BCB is doing much better job now in bringing new talent to the national team. Nafis, Aftab, Nazmul didn't disappointed us so far. The exception is Talha I guess.

Are you guys sure that he is just 17? Because according to observer "Both Mehrab and Himel are too old for U19's in 2006 so despite what is being thrown about for their ages, they were not considered for this team."

Too bad. So what should be the next step for Himel then? Going to England tour with team-a then?

I think he'll be past his 19th birthday before the world cup.

So what. Close enough to consider him a 17 year old today.

so if he's really 17, i'm assuming his 18th birthday's coming up in a couple of months, and his 19th will be right before the world cup in 2006. if that's true, then it's safe enough to say that he's 17 now.

Golam Rahman is the MVP of a team that includes:

Rajin
Taposh
Nazmul
Shanto
Enamul Jr.
Alok
Moniruzzaman

Granted some of them didn't play all the games. But its highly unlikely anyone could have matched him. Imagine if Rajin had those stats we would be out of our minds now.

Agree. My concern is not whether he is 17 or 18.

For some reason I thought he is in the u-19 team and then realized he is not in the team. My concern is what is the game plan for players like him, who played very well in dometic league, young enough as a prospect but not young enough to go with the u-19.

Even if doesn't play in the world cup, I think, we should have taken him to the Australian tour.

McInnes's coaching would have been invaluable for a kid like him. Developing our top talents could be more important to BD cricket than the mere under 19 world cup.
