Default Batsman with the best judgement of the ball?

"Hazare's technique of batting seemed to depend solely upon two vastly simple and comprehensive judgements-this ball could be hit, that ball could not be. On these pillars the great edifices of Hazare's innings have securely rested. There was no middle way with Hazare as there was to the Buddha. All great batsmen have their prods and pushes, intermediary gestures between the large flourishes,to keep the scorers alert and the scoreboard moving. not so with Hazare. He eschewed the potboilers not out of any philosophic scorn but because they did not fit into his simple scheme of things. The ball that could be hit he endeavoured to despatch for the maximum;the ball that could not be hit he dropped dead or dying at his feet. Add to this the number of balls he left alone, and the mystery, is clear why Hazare took so long, over the making of his runs."

from S Mukherjee- "An Indian Cricket Century"

....reading this paragraph I wondered whether there will ever come a time, when we can write just one miserable paragraph about how slow one of our batsmen batted that day?

Your observation is quite astute. Yes we need some batsmen who'll fit that description.

Before reading the paragraph (only rading the headline) the first name that came into my mind was 'Hannan Sarkar - facing balls on bouncy pitches'.

Halim Shah still gets a fluent runs. JO has to be our number one for slow batting... We need him to do just that in England.

Might be irrelevant, speaking of slow batting reminds me of a 1999 test innings of New Zealand Bowler GI Allott. He stayed in the middle for 101 minutes, faced 77 balls and scored a duck!!
