Match Highlights

2nd ODI: BD vs. SL at Bogra, 22 Feb 2006

Five down, four more to go. Dust off all your aphorisms because finally, after 15 futile tries, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka in an ODI. A wholehearted effort on the field, where bodies were flung fearlessly and bowlers were the picture of accuracy and guile, was followed up by a nerveless display with the bat and fans were delivered a 4 wicket win with 2 overs to spare.

The usual suspects all chipped in, as did the new comer and the prodigal son on the comeback trail.

To win against a team with whom you have struggled to even compete is one thing. To do so after an embarassing debacle - that's just the stuff of legend and Bashar's merry men seem to be developing a happy knack of writing their own fairy tale.

The skinny: SL 212/10 (49/49 overs), BD 213/6 (47/49 overs)

Bangladesh beats Sri Lanka by 4 wickets.

3rd ODI: BD vs. SL at Chittagong, 25 Feb 2006

Close doesn't count. That's what the Bangadesh cricket team must tell itself after a disheartening loss to Sri Lanka in the ODI series decider.

Coming in a buyoant mood after the victory at Bogra, the Tigers were sniffing another kill with the Lions on the ropes early on in the game. The BD pacers were keeping things tight and the Narail Express had removed both SL openeres. However, Kumara Sangakarra gave a master class on how to construct a match winning innings and with support from his skipper and the surprise package of Lokurarchchi, SL put itself in position to post a prohibiting total. This they accomplished by dint of some lusty tail-end hitting in the last 10 over.

A target of 310 always looked out of reach for Bangladesh but while Ashraful and Bashar were putting together a 82 run partnership, there remained hope. Inevitably, that was not to be, as the pressure of mounting run rate caused risky shots and wicket losses. Eventually Bangladesh was simply glad to play out the 50 overs and minimize the margin of defeat.

The skinny: Sri Lanka 309/7, Bangladesh 231/9

Sri Lanka beats Bangladesh by 78 runs.
