"Bangladesh will play tough and competitive cricket" - Shaun Williams

19 June 2007

Bangladesh under the leadership of newly appointed captain Mohammad Ashraful has vowed to play tough and competitive cricket in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh, a formidable one day outfit in one day international, are yet to play the same level of cricket in the Test arena. Bangladesh's interim coach Shaun Williams believes past record will not be a problem in the Test series against the islanders and Bangladesh is well capable of putting up a good fight in the Test series.

"We will be tough and we will be competitive," said Williams in the first press briefing of the touring Bangladesh team in the Taj Samudra hotel.

Mohammad Ashraful in his maiden series as Bangladesh captain wants to improve the standard of cricket in every match they will play in Sri Lanka. "We want to extend every Test match to the fifth day," said Ashraful as his initial target for the Test series.

"We must improve a lot in Test cricket. We have been practicing hard and I hope that we play the matches well, it's not about the result, we have to keep improving every day," added the young prodigy.

Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene, said his team will not take Bangladesh lightly and paid respect to the young Tigers who had a memorable world cup.

"Bangladesh has made a lot of strides forward from the time they were last here. The more exposure you get in international cricket the players mature. We know how good Bangladesh are. We know how good they were in the World Cup. They were in our group and we know how dangerous they can be" said Jayawardane.

Bangladesh will kick off their tour with a three day practice match at the Colts grounds on Wednesday. The first Test match between the two teams will start on 25 June at Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
