28 June 2007

Bangladesh slumped to an innings and 234 run defeat in the first Test of three-match Laqshya series on Thursday at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. Sri Lanka bagged the last five Bangladesh wickets in just 4.4 overs to register the biggest win over their sub-continent rival.

After the crucial breakthrough, Muralitharan and Malinga ran through the hapless Bangladesh tail to bundle them out for 254 from the overnight score of 233 for 5.

Malinga was particularly lethal with the old ball and picked 3 of the last 5 wickets fell in the Bangladesh innings, Muralitharan bagged the remaining two wickets.

Muttiah Muralitharan was adjudged man of the match for his match haul of 9 wickets for 102 runs.

Despite the defeat, Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was determined to take positives out of the first Test to bounce back in the second Test match.

"The big positive was the second innings, it showed that if we can concentrate hard it is possible to play quality bowlers", said Ashraful in the post match presentation.

"For most of the innings we stuck to our game plan and it worked well - that gives us confidence going into the second and third tests. Our aim is to make sure that every Test we get a little bit better", he added.

The second Test starts on July 3 at P Sravanamattu Stadium also in Sri Lankan capital.
