Shahadat Hossain and Mehrab Hossain took three wickets apiece to restrict South African Airways Challenge XI to 265 in the only practice match ahead of the Test series at De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley today. Bangladesh finished the day on 92 for 2 still trailing the hosts by 173 runs.
However, the day started very differently for Bangladesh after they were put to field by the opposition skipper Wendell Bossenger. SAA Challenge XI openers played Bangladesh new ball bowlers with ease and shared a mammoth 170 run partnership for the first wicket. Shahadat Hossain returned for his second spell in the second session of the day and triggered the top order collapse by removing both openers, DJ van Wyk (87) and AJ Seymore (75) in successive overs.
After Shahadat's burst of three top order wickets in three overs, Mehrab Hossain Jr. destroyed the middle order with three more wickets and finally pacer Mahbubul Alam moped up the tail with two quick wickets. South African lost their 10 wickets for 95 runs after the impressive 170 run opening partnership.
Bangladesh started positively and scored freely until Tamim Iqbal was bowled by the left arm seamer Mthokozisi Shezi on 51. Shezi removed Zunaid in the very next ball to reduce the visitors to 51 for 2, but Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful and opener Imrul Kayes ensured that no further damage is done. Some late flurry of boundaries by Ashraful propelled Bangladesh to 92 for 2 at the end of the days play.
