A phenomenal performance from Kiwi skipper Daniel Vettori denied Bangladesh a deserving victory as New Zealand chased down 317 to win the first Test by 3 wickets at Divisional Stadium in Chittagong today.
Vettori bagged 9 wickets for 133 runs and batted resolutely in the second innings to raise his match tally to 131 runs and made the difference between the two sides. In a stark contrast, Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful could only score 2 runs in the match after playing insensible shots before getting out.
However, Chittagong Test will be remembered for the performance of Shakib Al Hasan who grabbed 7 for 36 in the first innings and set a new Bangladeshi record of best bowling in a Test innings. Shakib also scored crucial 71 runs in the second innings to keep Bangladesh in the Test, but didn't get enough support from Bangladesh top order who faltered yet again. The second Test of the series will start on 25th October in Dhaka.
