Bangladesh win thriller to revive campaign

Shafiul Islam produced his innings of life to spark life in the struggling Bangladesh innings to seal a thriller against England to revive Bangladesh's world cup campaign at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong today. Shafiul turned the match on its head with some blistering stroke play and injected confidence in his partner Mahmudullah Riyad as the 9th wicket pair shared a 58 run partnership to secure an unbelievable victory.

Chasing a modest victory target of 226 in 50 overs, Bangladesh were reeling at 169 for 8 after losing 5 quick wickets for only 14 runs. Young paceman Shafiul Islam who had an ODI average of only 5.60 entered the arena with completely different mindset and smacked English bowlers all around the park for a run a ball 24 and secured the vital win for the hosts. Mahmudullah Riyad was more measured in his approach and scored a calm 21 from 42 deliveries. With this win the qualifying scenario became wide open as all teams except Netherlands still have realistic chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and invited England to bat first considering the dew factor under lights Bangladesh spinners strangled the English batsmen with their immaculate line and length bowling on a slow low wicket of Chittagong. England innings failed to gather momentum early on until the arrival of Eoin Morgan who changed the pace of England innings. Morgan and Jonathan Trott shared 109 runs 3rd wicket partnership which threatened to take the match away from Bangladesh. A low diving catch by Imrul Kayes broke the partnership and Bangladesh came strongly to restrict England to 225 after picking up wickets at regular interval.

Trott was the top scorer for England with a patient 67 while Morgan hammered a brisk 63. Bangladesh spinners shared 7 wickets between them to take the control of the match at the halfway point.
