Dhanmondi Club pulled off an upset six-wicket win over Surjo Tarun Club
in a GrameenPhone Premier Cricket Relegation League match at the Dhanmondi
Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Young paceman Debabrato Pal and his partner Tariqul Islam wreaked havoc
with the new ball as Surjo Tarun, electing to bat on a damp wicket, were
shot out for 131 in 40.3 overs. The match was reduced to a 42-overs-a-side
contest after overnight shower delayed the start.
Debabrato and Tariqul captured three wickets each to send the Taruns
reeling at 31 for six from where they never recovered.
Debabrato, who played for Chittagong in the National League, finished
with fantastic figures of 3 for 20 from his nine overs. Tariqul was equally
impressive with three for 27.
Surjo Tarun crossed the 100-mark thanks mainly to a defiant 38 by off-spinner
Sohel Islam and an unbeaten 12 from number ten batsman Saikat.
Dhanmondi reached the modest target of 132 in 32.3 overs losing only
four batsmen. Openers Shafiul and Nasirul put things right for them with
a 57-run stand.
Shafiul scored a breezy 35 off 38 balls that included six boundaries.
Nasirul scored 27. Nadim made 24 and wicketkeeper Hasibul Huq scored an
unbeaten 18.
