Australia wins Champions Trophy
Australia lifts the 2006 Champions Trophy by emphatically beating the
West Indies in a rain shortened final. Starting spectacularly the West
Indies collapsed even more spectacularly to 138 in 30.4 overs. Australia
were 45/2 when the heavens opened and when play could actually resumed
messers Duckworth and Lewis had dictated a revised target of 116 in 35
overs. That the Aussies quickly achieved with 41 balls to spare and no
further wicket hiccups.
Bangladesh Bows out
Bangladesh bows out of the 2006 edition of the Champions Trophy having
lost 2 out of 3 matches in the qualifying phase. They lost their first
two matches to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe but redeemed themselves with a thrashing
of wooden spooner Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh lost their opening qualifier match to Sri Lanka by 37 runs
at the the 2006 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. Batting first, Sri
Lanka racked up 302/8 on the back of a fine century from Upul Tharanga
. In return, Bangladesh did lose some early wickets but gamely fought
on to score a respectable 265/9. Aftab AHmed provided some fireworks with
a quickfire 33 off 31 balls and another youngster Sakib Al Hasan fought
patiently to remain unbeaten on 69 his maiden ODI half century.
Bangladesh next meets the WI in a crucial match.
Sri Lanka 302 for 8 (Tharanga 105) beat Bangladesh 265 for 9
(Saqibul 67*) by 37 runs

2nd Qualifying Match: BD vs WI at Jaipur, Oct 11, 2006
Batting first, Bangladesh was dismissed for 161 after being 95 for 1
in the 20th over at one stage. The only bright spot was Shariar Nafees
and Aftab Ahmed sharing a 85 run partnership with Aftab going on to score
59. West Indies had no trouble overhauling the meager Bangladesh total
for no loss of wickets as they scampered to an easy win in 36.4 overs
with Chris Gayle scoring an emphatic 104*.
36.4 overs West Indies 164 for 0 beat Bangladesh 161 by 10 wickets

3rd Qualifying Match: BD vs ZIM at Jaipur, Oct 13, 2006
Batting first, Bangladesh scored 232 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs
on a slow wicket. Opener Shahriar Nafees anchored the innings and went
on to score 123*, the highest ODI score for a Bangladeshi. Nafees is now
the first Bangladeshi to have two ODI centuries. The 231 was enough to
see of the Zimbabweans. Once the pace came off the ball, the slowbowlers
forst srangled and then skittled out the Zimbabweans for only 130. Only
BRM Taylor offered any resistance in his 52.
Bangladesh wins by 101 runs
