The beautiful places I have in my mind are all lost in current times. Dhaka in the 70's and 80's. We use to live in Shamoli (BACHS) beyond the ring road. A lake (full of fishes - Fisheries Department came and had projects there) adjacent our house with a boat. Had cows, chicken, goats and of course vegetable nursaries. Living inside the city limits yet enjoying gram-bangla at the same time.
Now? I can't even recognize how to get to my home!!

My fantasy retirement scenario: beachfront cabins with modern toilet + electricity/Internet in Kuakata, Singaraja (Bali) and Racha Island (Phuket).

Heard stories from parents and grandparents regarding what BD was and is now-looking at the villages still-I can only imagine how beautiful it was

Siberia is beautiful. I remember flying over it on the way to Novosibirsk on a cold October morning and I had never seen such pristine wilderness. It was awe-inspiring but it made me feel very small.
I agree with the others that there are parts of Bangladesh-India-Nepal that are really beautiful, but just like anywhere else in the world many of these places are defaced with crass commercialization. Some parts of the Himalayas, on the India and Nepal side, are good examples of that.

You and I love this place because we have our friends, family and roots here. There are also some of the eateries, the remarkable stories of our resilient and peaceful underclass, and surprising moments and snapshots of utter bliss. But that's a part of the "gobore pauddophul" aspects of a basically fugly and barely livable (unless you're wealthy) megacity of 20 million built for 500,000.

Loved your description
Yeah agree with you all regarding BD
rural life draws me more than the urban
family and friends the prime driving force now.
Dhaka's gone- with the water problems it will facce in the future as well. Poor planning, commercial interests-disaster

I probably love it still because I don't live there and my visits back have been sporadic till recently. I am still looking at it through 80s glasses.
I missed out on Dhaka during the 80s, but Dhaka during the 70s was indeed a pretty little town.

I am gonna mention a place that few people have heard of... Iguazu Falls! Until we were planning our trip to Argentina, neither me nor my gf had ever heard of it... and we are still wondering why so few people know about this place...
We did the walk up to "Garganta del Diablo" (The Devil's Throat), as shown in this video:
A more general video covering all the waterfalls at Iguazu...
Strongly recommended to those with the means (getting there can be expensive) and an appreciation for the raw power of nature. Some photos I took myself:
P.S. Buenos Aires was boring... but Iguazu alone made the trip to Argentina worth every penny.
