Default Small problems to work on - Shakib

Small problems to work on

http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesig...php?nid=128894

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, identified bowling in the Powerplay overs as one weak point that they needed to work on in order to win matches against bigger nations in one-day cricket.

Shakib's boys conceded 107 runs in the last ten overs, 55 of them coming in the batting Powerplay, during the third and final ODI of the Beximco Series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here yesterday. That leaking of runs proved too costly in the end as they lost the match by 45 runs to give the visitors a 3-0 wrap.

"Bowling in the Powerplay overs is a problem for us. We give away too many runs in that part which have cost us dear. It is very important to bowl well in Powerplay overs if you want to win," said the Bangladesh captain.

The Bangladesh captain had earlier said number three and four batting positions are a problem too which needs to be addressed.

However, Shakib was pretty satisfied with the overall performance from the Tigers in the series.

"We played good cricket overall, came close in the second match. We are improving with every game which is very satisfying. We are not having big problems, rather small problems which we need to sort out," said Shakib.

Shakib scored thirty-eight runs from as many balls in yesterday's match and the whole team were banking on him to play a big knock and he felt it too.

"I thought if I could score 80 today, we would win. There was turn for the first thirty overs in the first innings, then it got easier for batting," said Shakib.

Shakib was adjudged leg-before wicket against part-time spinner Kevin Pietersen, but replays showed that the ball hit his leg outside the off-stump after pitching outside. After his dismissal, Bangladesh innings disintegrated fast. But Shakib was in no mood to blame the umpire in question -- Enamul Haque -- for losing the match.

"Umpiring is a tough job. Sometimes these things happen, not that they are done intentionally against the lesser nations. Overall umpiring was good today [Friday], apart from the one crucial error," said Shakib.

Though Shakib believed that the umpire's job in one-day cricket could be made easier and more accurate with installation of the referral system, which is currently used in Tests only.

This is mind blowing - he is happy to blame it on his fellow bowlers and not bothered that the team could not chase down 285 runs against a second string English attack, that too on a home ground!

if we are improving after every game, why are we losing after every game?

the problem is our rate of improvement is slower than the rate of improvement of other teams!!

I don't think he is throwing his bowlers ( him included in that group ) under the bus as you suggest. I don't also think he is blaming anyone in particular. But, as a group, yes we struggle in opposing teams batting PP. It is just an acknowledgment of the fact. You have to recognize it first before you do something about a problem. Good teams always have a good score on their back with wkts in hand when they initiate their PP. So, they also take more chances and usually with wkts in hand, they come good more often than not. I would however ask Sakib to save three overs for the opposing PP and lead himself to the charge as the premier bowler ( also the most experineced ). He should lead the way.

Sakib is living in dreamland. I am surprised by his choice of words. they played dreadful cricket, now, they have no chance to beat England, except by some miracle, they can beat them in England which is highly unlikely by a long shot.

Someone should point out to him that he played a big role how batting became easier after 30 overs - he spread out the field even when English batsmen were not having much success hitting boundaries.

He should have watched how Utseya (or Taibu, whoever is in charge of field placing in Zimbabwe team) maintained restrain on WI's scoring rate through out the match yesterday with good field placing.

I don’t think Shakib is as much in charge as we think he is. May be it’s all planned ahead. Otherwise, why does it all seem premeditated? And what confirms it is when Athar Ali spoke to him about his decision to bring on Shafiul in stead of a spinner on the 2nd match. Shakib said that Shafiul bowls pretty well in the power play situation so he was the go to guy which tells me that it was already set. Doesn’t mater what the situation was he was going to bring in Shafiul even if it means denying the bowler who just took a wicket in his last over, sigh!!

If you take out the last 10-15 overs from England's batting including the batting PP, were we that far behind than them?? since the batting PP got introduced in the ODI format teams have learn to use it to their advantage, while we have not. If I had to find 2 big mistakes from our last ODI i'd have to say the batting PP in both innings, during the english batting PP we gave away way too many runs then we should have and for our innings we didn't use the batting PP to our advantage. My gut feeling tells me that the management is afraid to take the batting PP in the middle of the innings, because they are afraid of a collapse. If that is the case than we need to work on it so that collapse doesn't happen.

I believe Eshen pointed it out in an earlier thread that all this roots from the lack of respect for the PROPER way to play T20. Which is to hit the ball over the fielders and not go for a wild slog 6 each time. BD is also the only team today that seems to bat certain balls in ODIs and T20 with the pre meditated dead block where the ball is simply placed down to the ground with no opportunity of scoring whereas other teams/players will use defensive placings which get them the single and occasional boundary via a lucky edge or misfielding.

Shakib needs to work with his temperament problems. You can afford to be the victim of brain fart so frequently specially when you are a captain.

It is the powerplay that makes the deference.
