Default Alas!! We won’t get this West Indies to play

I was looking at the West Indies Team playing the 1st test against Sri Lanka today. Apart from Shiv Chanderpaul, there is no player with adequate test playing experience.
The first XI is composed of 7 players with less than 10 test match experience including three debutants. Other 3 players have just 10 tests beside their name. 10 out of 11 players are almost inexperienced.

Test Experience of West Indian Players:
Shiv Chanderpaul= 86
Denesh Ramdin = Debut
Daren Powell = 10
Omari Banks = 8
Kerry Jeremy = Debut
Deighton Butler = Debut
Sylvester Joseph= 2
Narsingh Deonarine = 2
Dwayne Smith = 6
Tino Best = 10
Jermaine Lawson = 10

Alas!! We do not have any schedule to play West Indies this time!! We could have another test series win, if we had the luck to play with this West Indies.

And how do yuo think we can easily get a walk over on the secodn string WI team?

We are getting better of course, but mind it! We are still not that good that we can beat even even a secodn string WI team at any time and at any place..

May be the batting looks fragile for the westindies...not the bowling..
Germaine lawson has taken a 7wicket haul against the australians..and Tino Best has also had his stint against good teams...

now.. this is defintiely day dreaming. Even a third string WI team will be able to defeat BD team. Our team isnt that good enough yet. So..let us be practical and hope they improve gradually.

Thanks.

I think we will be able to beat the first string WI team any time, any day given that our players play responsibly. The mindset you are showing (and many others) is the main obstacle if you are going for a win. Even the first string WI team is taking all the beatings all around the world! If you want to win first of all you have to believe that you will win. If you cannot believe you can win you will never win.

interesting comment there. after winning against australia, bashar said they never thought they will win and were just trying to play the 50 overs. only when they had 10 overs left and have 80 odd runs to get they thought they had a chance to win. lets say its just the thought of bashar and enthusiastic ash was always thinking of the win, how many of the bd team would have thought they can get that win before that match? confidence is often overestimated by people. a team has to be good enough to win(bd was good enough to beat australia) and then confidence is just a little hurdle maybe 5%.

I agree with Locutus. Yes would have a chance to win. But it wont be so easy as one thinks. See the score at the end of the day. They are 271/6 and chandarpaul is on the crease. Remember one thing They are facing full strength Srilanka team in Srilanka.

yea even this WI team has the capability to beat us withing 3 days with innings. So we should only think to improve our standard and find out the best players.

What would be better for BD. West Indies beating Sri Lanka or Sri Lanka beating West Indies because we tour them quite soon.

Sri Lanka winning! U dont wanna face a mad Murali. Any way Murali was unlucky yeterday he could of easily gotten 5-6 wickets yesterday.

We got our work cut out for us in september. All the Srilankan rust will be gone by then.

Ashraful is the best we got vs Sri Lanka if he gets any help we may force a draw and get a score of 400+.

What Shakalaka said.

And remember, the West Indies fought off a follow-on at St Lucia.

There is very little difference between Test-quality players - it's all the last 5%.

This Lasith Malinga is turning out to be a good bowler. I am actually not very optimistic about our prospects in the forthcoming tour. First Vaas and Malinga then Murali. In one dayers SL are hard to beat at home, all those pinch hitters!

The bottom line is that we have to play to improve ourselves - we have to play like Whatmore says - we want to see individual improvement match by match basis, series by series basis.

We can't just go to Sri Lanka to win and to try to score 250 in every matches in the ODIs or to score 300 in every match. We have to go to Sri Lanka to do 'everything that is right'.

For example, we can't afford to play Test cricket thinking it to be an ODI match and start bashing around from the word go. We have to play as is right when is right.

Just think of our England tour - when Ashraful started his innings against Australia - the match we won, it wasn't like that Ashraful was hitting all over the park from the start - he had to play every ball as correctly as possibly - punishing the bad balls, and defending the good balls. It was through playing correct shot selections by our batsman and using the conditions properly by our bowlers that had gave us that win - we did not get that win by just playing attacking strokes all over the park or bowling fast & furious that we tried to do throughout that test series.

I think Maliga will kill us in the SL tour. We always worry much about the main bowlers of the opposition and get killed by their rookie bowlers. For example, while we were worried about Kumble and Harbhajan during India series, Pathan stabbed us from the back.

I will not jump into concluding this new-look WI team's strength or weaknesses. But I rather prefer the Aussi Style sports professionalism:

"Do not change your performance level according to opposition's strength! Always play your best game and try to make as much impression as possible on the opposition."

Even Dav Wahtmore has been trying to adopt the team to this theme of not looking into opposition's strength too much and rather concentrate on self-performance.
