Default Associates to get a shot at Test cricket

Associate teams will have the opportunity to play Test cricket, with the ICC Board approving an ICC Test Challenge, which will take place every four years between the lowest-ranked Test team and the winner of the ICC Intercontinental Cup. The inaugural Test Challenge will take place in 2018, with the intention of giving a context to the Intercontinental Cup.

But only if we make sure that we are in last place at the end of 2017.

২০১৭ সাল আসতে আরো অনেক দিন বাকি। আরো কিছুদিন নাকে তেল দিয়ে ঘুমায় নেই তারপর এ নিয়ে ভাববো।

If Zimbabwe doesn't come to BD for a tour, it'll be difficult for BD to come out of 10th rank. Zim got significant points by beating Pakistan at home this year. Those points will not expire by 2017 end (3.5 year window). So, it has to be a matching performance by BD or a way to beat Zimbabwe in order to climb up the points ladder.
Anyway, BD should beat Ire easily at home. I am not sure what will happen in Ire ...

ZIM have 34 points and we have 19. Even without us beating them - say if this year's series gets cancelled. Hopefully not since ZIM will make money hosting SA and AUS. In 3 years, if we draw enough Tests, we can still cross ZIM. Provided ZIM lose all theirs. But ZIM have a decent shot at beating teams at home like SL and maybe even WI.

All in all it will be exciting. Good move by the ICC to give Associates a chance at Test status, even if its at our expense.

Good move by the ICC. Finally an associate will have a chance at playing Test cricket and it should serve motivation for Ireland and also us and Zimbabwe.

We have plenty of time to move up the rankings and it's very important we do so. Not only do we want to avoid playing Ireland but if we can't move ahead of Zimbabwe by 2017 then it'll once again show we're not progressing the way we should.

We have to make sure we don't lose to Zimbabwe anymore which won't be easy. I feel it'll be too tough beating others so we have to make sure we can draw some matches as well. Also have to hope that Zimbabwe loses their matches. It should come down to the wire and it'll be interesting to see who has to play Ireland

this is a great initiative, glad they're not using a relegation system (imagine the test side losing, then losing it's test status and funding). i think it's a really good system they've worked out, it's going to make the intercontinental cup more exciting as teams are going to push even more now to get the trophy.

Absolutely! But what I wanted is to include the team as a proper funded member in ICC as soon as they get a drawn series against the lowest ranked full member. The three biggies would certainly not let it happen.

They will. It was in the ICC's february manifesto. If there is an 11th test team, they will get the funding of the 10th team, while the 10th team's funding goes down to the Associate's level in terms of World Cup revenues, etc. So the Big 3 won't lose anything.

Update:

Here we go..

1. Not clear the consequence if No 10 rank test team loses the game
2. No 9 and 10 need to play Qualifying match in T20-2016 World Cup

^based on the ICC's february meeting and the latest CI article, there is no relegation for the #10 team. however, the #10 ranked team would lose funding if they lost to the Associate, who would gain that funding difference.

and they are using the same WT20 format as per CI. BD and ZIM have to play in the qualifying round, Ireland get auto berth into that round since they are ranked 9th. 5 other Associates will qualify for the this rounding joining BD, ZIM, and IRE.

Not liking the funding thing, it's one of the reasons associates struggle to bridge that gap so taking it away from the full members will make it tough for them to get back there and could even kill cricket in that country. Zimbabwe for example are already struggling financially so loss of funding could have a major impact.

I can't remember the details, but I think it only applies to revenue from World Cups and such. And it wouldn't be a total loss, they would just swap shares with Ireland. Granted even no loss puts ZIM at trouble, but I guess its fair. An 11th test nation deserves more money and we all know the Big 3 aren't going to give it to them. Although I guess ZIM mostly subsists on ICC loans anyway, so I'm not sure it really makes a difference. They'll just loan a little bit more. Teams like ZIM and SL will never be financially viable due to lack of interest in those countries compounded with a lack of players marketable outside their own countries. Thats what drives broadcast rights.

This should have been done in 2000 when we got our test status! Dang it! It would have helped us a great deal back then. At least I felt BD wasn't ready for tests yet at that time and was willing to wait for 4-5 more years.
