Sri Lanka lifts domestic ban on ICL players

Marvan Atapattu and Russel Arnold's bans have been lifted

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has broken ranks with the official cricketing establishment by deciding to allow five cricketers and an umpire who last year signed up for the unauthorised ICL to play domestic cricket. The significant decision was taken by SLC's interim committee last week and has become public two days after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) became the latest nationol body to ban its ICL cricketers from all forms of official cricket.

ICL officials have welcomed the move as "a step in the right direction".

The five cricketers who are now eligible to play for their respective clubs are Marvan Atapattu, the former Sri Lanka captain, Russel Arnold, Upul Chandana, Avishka Gunawardene and Saman Jayantha; the umpire is Ranmore Martinesz. Atapattu, Arnold and Chandana retired from international cricket to play in the ICL, and will now be seen in Sri Lanka's Premier League and the limited-overs tournament, which are scheduled to start next month.

We are not in strong position to follow what Srilanka did. The day we do it our Test Status will just disappear.

Besides Srilanka has major problem looming next summer when they tour England as their top perfomers have refused to tour as they want to play in IPL.

Arjuna Ranatunga, the interim committee chief of Sri Lanka Cricket, is adamant that the tour of England in April and May 2009 will still go ahead as planned, despite opposition from several senior players, including the captain Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, who would rather be plying their trade in the Indian Premier League.

And forget talk about players in the ICL then wanting the right to return to international cricket. There are 10 New Zealanders in the ICL and I don't think any of them would fancy that.

International cricket is great when you're playing. You are at the pinnacle of your sport.

Then, about six to 12 months after you've stopped, you realise there's a wide world out there and you actually can live without international cricket. Life goes on.

It seems the be all and end all while you're doing it, but then you discover people can live quite productive, enjoyable lives without playing for their country.

And it can be quite a surprise, because at the time you don't realise that. Players don't lie awake at night because they no longer play international cricket.

Think about Shane Bond and the way he has played down talk of returning, if the ICL players are freed up to become eligible.

Bond is making about $1.5 million a year for four months' work at a standard where, if he's at 80 per cent of his peak, he's doing a really good job for his team. It's reasonably low stress from a performance perspective, he's making heaps of money, and can play with his kids eight months a year. Why would you not want to do that?
