Will they ever come good?

For some odd reason, the 2nd Test against South Africa last week left me with doubts for the first time. I am starting to wonder whether any of our current group of batsmen will ever become as good as their talents would indicate. Guys like Ashraful and Aftab have as much talent in them, physically speaking, as any other batsmen to ever play the game. They can play ever shot, dominate any bowler, play according to the sitaution, etc. But their psychological games are even poorer than the Bermuda batsmen. Everything from application, to understanding of the basics is sorely lacking.

So here is the billion-dollar question: will our current group of players ever become players that could be unanimously termed "world class?" I am not talking about being classed as legendary a la tendulkar or ponting, but more along the lines of a gary kirsten, or marvan atapattu.

Our batsmen needs a sports psychiatrist. They didn't have one for last 3/4 years.

And I'm very hopeful they will do better if they get one.

Roqibul will be a great cricketer. But selectors should make him work hard for his position by only keeping him in A team for next 2-3 years at least

Some of these players will be great for Bangladesh, but not for the rest of the world. The only player who has world recognition is AShraful, but seems to fail more than succeed at the moment. Unless he can get his brains together soon, he will not be recognized in the world. For his sake and for the sake of BD cricket, I hope that he can turn things around for he has all the talent in the world,but when he hs a bat in his hand, he forgets all his rules and goals.

I remember when sakib started playing for bangladesh. We said this guy don't have a nervous system in his body. Which I still beleive. He is a tough guy. I think he got the temperment to become a reliable player.

Sahadat is the other one who is getting better by time.

Player who will remain inconsistant: Ash, Mash, Aftab, Tamim
Players who will not survive: Enamul, Mushfiq, Rajin, Reza

Will they ever come good? Why doubt man, after all don't we BC folks believe from the core of our heart that BD is destined to be the world beaters of cricket? That means all our players will be Lara, Tendu, Ponting, McGrath, Warne.........

BD needs good structure's in demestic level, and stop relying on players from under 19 level, when this stops then may be you can see results...players comming in to the national team averaging 20 in domestic leauge..and we expect them to be consistant?? BD has long way to go...yes they have huge talent but 1 only needs 10% talent and rest is confidence which comes with experiance..

That's what I was afraid of. He now reached a point which will take him a while to come back. And it is even harder under JS, no matter what he said about Golden Boy.

Exactly! Thats why Sakib will likely out-perform/score Ashraful in the long run. However, Ashraful may still be a bigger star, he is the one with miracle power. Ash is just so fun to watch when in action and can siglehandedly win a match. Ash is however may not be as prudent of a captain as Sakib.

I am very sure that Mushy will make a comeback. he is still very young and I wish him all the best. Many players go through a lean patch, but have bounced back.
For the time being, he should concentrate on his studies and play for the A team.

Great? I'm not so sure about that, but 'great' by our own standards or 'good' by International standards? Certainly !

I think the following cricketers will will come good, but only from their early 30s: -

1. Mohammad Ashraful: I expect close to twenty test 100s from this guy by the time he retires. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the day he learns to apply himself by playing higher percenetage shots, will be the day he becomes truly "world class" and NEVER look back.

2. Zunaed Siddiqui: I expect him to be the first of four Bangladeshi Batsman to average close to 40 in all 3 forms of cricket.

3. Tamim Iqbal: See Zunaed.

4. Alok Kapali: He will be our Misbah Inshallah after several years of steady A-Team cricket to help him overcome some of those psychological issues we know too well. The day he does manage to carry some of his remarkable domestic form over to the highest level, will be the happiest of days for many of us. In the mean time, I won't mind if he doesn't get another chance before his late 20s.

5. Rokibul Hasan: See Zunaed.

6. Imrul Kayes: See Zunaed.

7. Aftab Ahmed: I expect him average in the mid 30s by the time he retires, thanks to Coach Siddons.

8. Mushfiqur Rahim: I expect him to come back as a specialist batsman and average in the 30s by the time he retires.

9. Nazmus Sadat: I think he'll improve, learn to steady his temperament and give BiZu and Tamim a good run for their money in ODIs and T20Is.

10. Dhiman Ghosh: I think he'll establish himself as one of the premier WKs in all forms of cricket and a serious theat down the order.

11. Farhad Reza: I think he'll continue to improve, learn to steady his temperament, and become an effective batsman down the order.

12. Syed Rasel: Maybe our Chaminda Vaas with the ball by the time he retires.

13. Abdur Razzak: I think he'll go down as one of the top ODI SLAs by the time he retires. His batting would be just as effective as Dhiman or Farhad's down the order.

14. Shahadat Hossain: I think he'll be our highest wicket taker by the time he retires and his batting will continue to improve also.

15. Mashrafe Bin Mortaza: Let's see what he does in order to get that Tigerheart out of the MaMu.

16. Shakib Al Hasan: He needs to get a helmet that fits properly and clean up his batting technique before becoming as effective as he can be, especially in ODIs. He'll probably be our most successful captain by the time retires.

17. MH Rubel: I'll go with Rafiq on this one.

18. Shaju Datta: He'll pick up where Rafiq left off.

19. Enamul Haq Jr: I think he'll play and dominate our test bowling for a long time. I see him with 300 test wickets by the time he retires in his late 30s.

20. Dollar Mahmud: Definitely our own Chaminda Vaas with both ball and bat, once handled correctly.

21. Rubel Hossain: Our own Fidel Edwards Inshallah. I think he'll be the first Bangladeshi seamer to average his pace in the 140s and offer the widest array of lethal swings in his arsenal.

22. Shubhashish Roy: Pace, power and aggression galore once handled correctly.

23. Shumon Saha: Another Rajib Inshallah.

24. Shahriar Nafees: I see him retiring with an average in the 30s.

25. Nafees Iqbal: See Shahriar Nafees.

26. Talha Jubair: As aggressive as ever, he's continuing to re-invent himself as an accurate swing bowler, and I think he'll contribute just as much as Rasel will Inshallah.

27. Abul Bashar: Very scrappy and hardworking player in the Rana (RIP), Rajin, MH Rubel and Farhad mould, and I expect him to continue to improve and take full advantage of the chances he gets. Excellent fielder.

28. Nayeem Islam: I hope he continues to improve and doesn't become another Nadif Choudhury !

29. NH Milon: If his current improvements continue, then WATCH OUT Farhad Reza.

30. Mehrab Jr/Golam Rahman/Ghazi Salahuddin/Imtiaz Hossain/Golam Mabud, take your pick: They need loads of A-Team experience before coming into the senior side with any hope of staying there.

Lost faith in TK Baisya, Ehsanul Haq and Nadif Choudhury, and never had much faith in Rajin Saleh and Mohammad Nazimuddin. It's too early to talk about guys like Shubho at this point.
