A determined Bangladesh recorded their first-ever win over New Zealand in emphatic manner on Thursday, making light of their player exodus to the ICL. The loss was a huge blow for New Zealand, who needed a clean sweep to take second spot in the rankings. Junaid Siddique, along with Mohammad Ashraful, ensured Bangladesh capitalise on the momentum given by Mashrafe Mortaza's bowling which helped restrict New Zealand to a modest target.

It was a significant victory for the hosts given the circumstances leading into the series but the challenge seemed to have inspired Ashraful and his team, who played sensibly with both bat and ball.

Junaid remained calm despite the fall of Tamim Iqbal, his fellow opener, in the fifth over. Even if Bangladesh's run-rate - the runs coming mainly in singles - was similar to New Zealand's after 15 overs (New Zealand were 62 while Bangladesh were 55) the hosts had lost one wicket compared to New Zealand's four. Bangladesh claim first win over BLACKCAPS

The BLACKCAPS have slumped to their first defeat against Bangladesh after losing the opening one-day international in Mirpur by seven wickets.

The tourists were outplayed with the bat, the ball and in the field as Bangladesh chased down their modest target of 202 with 27 balls to spare to take a shock 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

It marked the first time in 12 meetings that the BLACKCAPS had lost to the Tigers and swiftly ended their goal of vaulting to No 2 in the International Cricket Council one-day rankings.

Such a promotion was in the offing providing they won the three-match series 3-0, which they were widely expected to do. But Bangladesh put paid to that with a confident allround performance, limiting the tourists to 201 for nine after a fine display in the field.

In their first outing since July, the BLACKCAPS were clearly ring rusty but that can take nothing away from Bangladesh, contesting their first series since losing the services of 14 frontline players who deserted the national team to join the rebel Indian Cricket League.

Opener Zunaed Siddique stood tallest for the hosts to score a career-best 85, including eight boundaries, off 139 balls to set up his team against a bowling attack that failed to penetrate.

Captain Mohammad Ashraful was equally influential, making 60 not out off 56 balls as he and Siddique combined in a stand of 109 for the third wicket, their nation's best for any wicket against the BLACKCAPS. Earlier, the BLACKCAPS suffered a batting collapse to hand the initiative to Bangladesh.

After being invited to bat first in damp and overcast conditions, they lost five wickets for 18 runs to slump to 65 for five inside 17 overs before Jacob Oram led the resistance movement with a battling 57 off 89 deliveries. The only top order batsman to get underway was Jesse Ryder, who made 34 off 35 balls before spooning a catch to mid wicket.

Oram tempered his natural inclination to hit out as he and skipper Daniel Vettori cautiously set about turning the tide. These two put on 70 for the seventh wicket as the tourists reached 149 after 40 overs before Vettori departed for 30.

Oram hung around for another six overs before holing out at long on to become left-armer spinner Abdur Razzak's third victim. Razzak finished with the fine figures of three for 33 off 10 overs, but he was outshone by spirited fast-medium bowler Mashrafe Mortaza, who enjoyed the helpful conditions early on.

Mortaza snared three for 18 in his opening burst of eight overs and returned to pick up another late in the piece. He ended with four for 44, figures which suffered in his last spell when he conceded 26 runs in his last two overs.

Teenager Tim Southee swatted an unbeaten 19 off 14 balls at the death to drag the tourists over the 200 mark. Kyle Mills, Mark Gillespie and Scott Styris all claimed a wicket each but the bowlers could do little to prevent the historic win for the hosts.

The second match of the series is at the same venue on Saturday.

Bangladesh stroll to historic win

Bangladesh secured a first ever one-day international victory over New Zealand with a seven-wicket win in Mirpur.

New Zealand were reduced to 79-6 against a new-look Bangladesh playing their first international since the Indian Cricket League exodus.

Jacob Oram hit a well-constructed 57 but the visitors struggled to 201-9.

Junaid Siddique (84) and Mohammad Ashraful (60) guided Bangladesh to a historic win which Mashrafe Mortaza (4-44) had earlier set in motion.

And the victory with 27 balls to spare was even more unexpected as last month the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) handed 10-year bans to 13 of its players associated with the ICL, a tournament run in direct competition to the officially recognised Indian Premier League.

The win had much to do with the momentum set by the impressive Bangladesh attack who restricted the Black Caps to their lowest-ever total against the home side.

Mortaza dismissed three of the New Zealand top order, while Abdur Razzak (3-32) contributed with the wickets of the dangerous Scott Styris, Daniel Flynn and Oram.

A 70-run partnership between Oram and Daniel Vettori (30) gave some respectability to the New Zealand score, and despite the low total the visitors would have still been confident of taking a 1-0 series lead.

But the Bangladesh batting line-up proved to be more resolute than they were late last year when they were skittled out for just 98 in Queenstown.

A confident 67-run second-wicket stand between Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim (32) set the platform.

And Siddique, who had managed 62 runs in his eight previous ODIs - at an average of just seven - formed a solid 109-run stand with Ashraful to inch the home side closer to victory.

Siddique's majestic innings was ended by Mark Gillespie when the left-hander was caught by Oram, so it was left for Shakib Al Hasan (six not out) to push Gillespie for the winning single.

Chasing 202 for victory, Bangladesh reached their target in the 46th over with seven wickets in hand. Ashraful finished unbeaten on 60.

Opener Siddique was named man of the match after piling up 85 runs in a patient innings which lasted until the 44th over. His 137-ball knock included eight boundaries before he was caught at backward point by Jacob Oram off Mark Gillespie.

After opener Tamim Iqbal (12) and Mushfiqur Rahim (30) were dismissed as Bangladesh reached 85-2, Siddique and Ashraful joined forces to frustrate the tourists.

While Siddique was happy to stand firm and look for openings to add to his score with singles, Ashraful smashed the ball around to notch up his 15th ODI half-century.

Ashraful hit five fours and a six in his 56-ball innings. The pair's 109-run third-wicket partnership put the hosts on course for a rare victory.

"We could implement our game plan and all had a good performance today to post the much-cherished win against a big team," Ashraful told reporters.

Earlier Bangladesh's paceman Mashrafe Mortaza and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak led a potent home attack that ripped through the New Zealand order to restrict them to 201 for nine in 50 overs.

Put into bat, Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum had given the tourists a solid start on a wicket drenched by overnight rain.

But when McCullum was caught by Syed Rasel for 14, it triggered a New Zealand collapse.

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori commended Bangladesh for playing well.

"They won the toss on a wicket that suited bowling first. We recovered reasonably well through Jacob Oram's innings, but in the end once the wicket dried up, 201 was just not enough," Vettori said.

The visitors went from 47 for no loss to 6-79, losing six wickets for just 32 runs in the space of 11 overs.

Ryder scored 34 before he became Mortaza's second victim and then Ross Taylor (2), Jamie How (7), Scott Styris (4) and Daniel Flynn (6) failed to get into double figures.

Jacob Oram (57) and Vettori (30) rescued the innings with a seventh-wicket partnership of 70 to steer New Zealand towards a competitive total.

All-rounder Oram smacked one six and four boundaries in his 89-ball innings before he was caught at long on by Rasel off a delivery from Razzak.

Vettori was caught at fine-leg by debutant Naeem Islam for off Shakib Al Hasan's bowling.

Mortaza, who also trapped How lbw and claimed the wicket of Kyle Mills, finished with four for 44 from his 10-over spell.

Razzak picked up three for 33, while pace bowler Shahadat Hossain and spinner Shakib chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Bangladesh claimed their first victory over New Zealand in a full international with a comprehensive seven-wicket triumph in the first of three One Day Internationals at Mirpur. Now only England and the West Indies are yet to be beaten by the Tigers and all involved with the side will be desperately hoping that this win doesn't herald another false dawn.

Jacob Oram scored his 10th One Day International half-century as New Zealand, 89 for six after 25 overs, posted 201 for nine but half-centuries from Zunaid Siddique and captain Mohammad Ashraful ensured that the target of 202 was reached with four and a half overs to spare.

Bangladesh made light of the loss of 14 players to the Indian Cricket League to have New Zealand struggling at the halfway mark before Oram added 70 runs with captain Daniel Vettori (30) and a late flurry of runs pushed them past the 200 mark.

After winning the toss and choosing to field first, Bangladesh, who have never beaten the Black Caps in an official international, reduced their tourists to 79 for six with Mashrafe Mortaza taking three wickets.

New Zealand started brightly enough, the recalled Jesse Ryder (34) and Brendon McCullum (14) adding 47 in 8.1 overs before McCullum was caught by Syed Rasel to become Mortaza's first victim.

He followed that up by having Ryder caught by Mahmudullah and Jamie How trapped in front for seven.

Ross Taylor (two) was adjudged lbw to Shahadat Hossain before Scott Styris (four) and Daniel Flynn (six) were dismissed by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, leaving Oram and Vettori with the task of getting their side up to a competitive total.

The experienced pair of left-handers responded to the challenge, playing patiently - their 70 runs taking nearly 20 overs. Oram hit four fours and a six with Vettori contributing four boundaries before both men fell to spinners Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan respectively.

Kyle Mills (16) and Tim Southee (19 not out) threw the bat with good effect at the death, Mills falling to Mortaza for his fourth victim as he finished with four for 44 along with Razzak's three for 32 to leave the match wide open.

Tamim Iqbal hit 12 from 12 balls as he looked to get Bangladesh's reply off to a flying start but when he was caught by Styris off of Mills, alarm bells may have started to ring.

However, the anticipated collapse never came with Mushfiqur Rahim (30) putting on a patient stand worth 67 for the second wicket with Siddique.

The decision to promote the recalled wicket-keeper to number three in the order proved an effective one, as it gave Ashraful the platform to come in late on and take the attack to the New Zealanders, as he passed his half-century in 46 balls with four boundaries and a six to hurry his side towards victory.

Siddique notched up his maiden ODI half-century and ended 15 short of a century when he holed out to Oram off of Gillespie in the 44th over, leaving Ashraful, unbeaten on 60, and Shakib Al Hasan, on five, to complete the job.

At the halfway stage, they had been 90 for two - just one more run ahead of New Zealand but crucially with wickets in hand which enabled them to pull off the win which puts them 1-0 up in the series with two matches still to play.

Opener Junaed Siddique, cool after losing his partner Tamim Iqbal, hammered a career-best 85 while skipper Mohammad Ashraful returned to form with 60 not out to propel the amazing turnaround from the depth of despair.

Man of the match Siddique and Ashraful together put on 109 runs for the third wicket. When the left-handed opener gave an easy catch to Jacob Oram off Mark Gilliespie, Bangladesh had been close to the victory with only eight runs needed from 38 balls with seven wickets in hand.

Ashraful along with Shakib Al Hasan took the side home in 45.3 overs to spark off wild celebrations.

Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim (30 off 57 balls), who was promoted up the order, steadied the innings with 67 runs for the second wicket after Tamim had fallen on 12, leaving the side at 18 for one in 4.1 overs.

The 20-year old opener, Siddique, faced 139 balls and smashed eight fours. Ashraful, who had been going through a bad patch since his century against the United Arab Emirates in the Asia Cup, hit his 15th ODI fifty to remain unbeaten off 56 balls, studded with five fours and one six.

Earlier, pace spearhead Mashrafee tore through the Black Caps batting order with four wickets in a miserly spell. His bowling colleagues, at times erratic, put up a spirited show to make sure the visitors did not get too far beyond the 200-mark.

Oram struck his 10th ODI fifty to rebuild New Zealand innings but could not stop the side from posting their lowest total against Bangladesh.

Their previous lowest tally of 224 came in Chittagong in 2004.

Mashrafee found his form to justify his captain's decision to bowl first following overnight showers in Mirpur. The tall pacer deftly exploited the early condition and then relied on accuracy to run through the top order with four for 44 in an unbroken eight-over first spell.

Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak wrecked the tail with three for 33.

Mashrafee, who returned three for 19 in his eight-over first spell with three maidens, could have snared five scalps had Mahmudullah not dropped Tim Southee in the final over.

New Zealand openers Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum, whose 28-ball 80 helped the Tasmanians plunge Bangladesh to a 10-wicket defeat in the final of three ODIs in New Zealand last December, threatened a repeat of a similar drubbing with a brisk 47 for the opening stand before Mashrafee brought the first breakthrough.

McCullum, who seemed uneasy against Mashrafee's pace, slashed him only to be caught by Syed Rasel at thirdman for 14.

Ryder, who was more attacking of the two, specially against Syed Rasel, soon followed his partner. He scored 19 runs in Rasel's first two overs and then smashed first-change Shahadat Hossain for a first-ball six before being holed out at midwicket.

Mashrafee finally had Ryder caught by Mahmudullah for a quickfire 34 off 35 balls, leaving New Zealand at 55 for two in 10.2 overs.

The visitors lost two wickets in quick succession, triggering a top-order collapse as Shahadat and Mashrafee dismissed Ross Taylor (2) and Jamie How (7) inside three runs.

Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, coming in the 17th over, trapped Scott Styris (4) lbw in his first over and then had Daniel Flynn (6) in his third over to reduce New Zealand to a precarious 79 for six in 21 overs.

However, Jacob Oram and captain Daniel Vettori briefly rescued the Black Caps with a timely 70 for the seventh wicket before Shakib Al Hasan removed the New Zealand skipper for a 57-ball 30 studded with four fours.

Oram, who survived a run-out scare on three, hit 56 off 88 balls featuring four fours and a six before before being caught by Rasel off Razzak.

Tailenders Southee and Kyle Mills scored 19 not out and 16 respectively to give New Zealand bowlers something to bowl at.

Bangladesh did beat New Zealand before, but it was in the warm-up match during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.

DHAKA : If you ask the Bangladesh players they would tell you that this was coming. People close to the team knew it was on the cards and were confident about that belief. Bangladesh's 7-wicket thrashing of New Zealand at the boisterous Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today was reward for that conviction, something that has the whole country rejoicing.

"It just feels like the days prior to the India game at the World Cup. That eerie yet definite feeling that that something fantastic will happen. You'll see that we are going to do something special," Abdur Razzak had confided to a couple of team members on the first day of practice after the Eid break. Today the left-arm spinner was backing that with performance. Buoyed by the new ball burst of mate Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (8-3-19-3 in the first spell and 4/44 to finish with) Razzak was back to his miserly best picking up 3/33 from his full quota as the Black Caps scraped to 201/9. Razzak had taken 3/35 and Mortaza 4/38 in that memorable win against India. Shades of Queen's Park Oval?

Another Trinidad hero Mushfiqur Rahim had batted at number three against India for some calming influence after an opener had fell early. Here he did a similar job after Tamim Iqbal (12) slashed hard at a ball out outside off and was caught at slip (18/1 in 4.1 overs). Asharful's opposite number agreed. "We probably did not respect the conditions as much as we should have and found ourselves 65/5. Mortaza was wearing braces on both 'legendary' knees before the pre-match warm-ups and evoked the remark from a fellow player: "He's looking good today!" And he did. Pitching the ball in all the right areas and moving them in and out at will he was a seam master at work. A deserving five-for was only missed when Mahmud Ullah dropped a dolly at mid wicket off Southee in the last over of the New Zealand innings but the big man had made his impact.

"He does that for us day in and day out. He doesn't always get the results because opposing teams tend to see him off and then attack the others but today was his day," said coach Jamie Siddons.

For Siddique it was an innings that will probably get him rolling again at this level. The first part of his knock was all about getting in and hanging in and then he flourished like he can. The left-hander's previous 8 ODI innings had brought him 62 and relief would be an understatement to describe his emotions.

"More importantly the team won and that makes me feel even better. I needed this innings to get my confidence back. My one-day record has been quite ordinary and it was about time I got some runs."

"We just executed the team plan today and we won. We always try to play according to plan but had difficulty in implementing them in recent times. Everything however fell into place today," said the 21 year old who didn't miss the chance to pay tribute to fellow Rajshahi star Khaled Mashud who was given a formal farewell by players of both teams and officials during the innings break today.

"He has been an idol. We grew up knowing only two international stars from Rajshahi, Mashud and Mushfiqur Rahman. He has been an inspiration for so many players and he has been the hardest working cricketer I have seen. I dream of emulating him someday."

Mashud, who watched the whole game and then lost himself in the embrace of his former teammates at the end of the game said this farewell was the closest to his burning desire to retire from the playing field.

"What a super way to sign off. The Bangladesh team has given me a present I will cherish for ever. This are lads who are going to take us to the next level. Mark my words. I just feel privileged to be here saying goodbye today."

Despite the euphoria today was also a day to target greater things. "We have a lot of work left in this series. This is only a good start and we can't lose focus. The series is still open," Siddique said. The night's schedule for the Tigers reflected that desire with only a quite team dinner at a posh steak house.
