This topic is here because Tamim's BMW is a hot topic for many. So is owning a BMW really a symbol of wealth? Or can anyone with an income buy one?

So far it seems to me that car shouldn't be a concern for our members... Food should be. Ramzan mashe bole khabar kinar poisha nai.. economy kharap jantam kintu ei obostha kokhono buzi nai.

Bro, I could vote for No but definitely not because it is too expensive. Rather the maintenance of a BMW would be too expensive compared to my current car. So it is not the price before but the price after which I am concerned. The low mpg and high maintenance cost with similar or poorer service and the anxiety after crossing 100K will always keep me thinking about the wastage of money with guilt.

Nippon rocks .

Hi Lamisa,
Following 4 people claimed to afford to buy a latest model 5 series and up bmw.

Yes ofcourse!
akabir77, Equinox, FagunerAgun, Rabz

A 5 series start with 50K USD and up. A 7 series start with 80K and up.

Now the next question is how many of the above are single?

For Zee and others..

Beamer---> Illegal delivery aimed at batsman's head ; a bumper ; a head high full toss.
Bimmer---> BMW.

Pretty important distinction.

Its not the price, as someone mentioned, but the high price of service that hits the pocket. True.

The poll question is vague, so I chose the second option (too expensive) for the BMW model that I like (M3) and can't afford. There is a good difference between an entry level BMW (1-series or 3-series) and an M-series or Z-series performance monster. I have more faith on a 10-yr old BMW than a 5-yr old Chevy having personally driven both. In U.S. I think they are offered with first 3-year free maintenance service and the clean-diesel stuff seems to offer decent mpg, but not as good as the new Ford Mustangs. If social status is the aim of the poll I would think the poll should be about owning a Mercedes, Cadillac or Lexus :-)

For enlightenment's sake I think I should mention here that afaik, an entry level 3-series BMW has a retail price of Tk.70 lakh (Tk.70,00,000) in Dhaka. Audi A6/ A5 Sportback 2.0T is going for Tk.1,40,00,000, and A4S 2.0T is going for Tk.1,10,00,000. Merc C-Class entry level is also around 90 lakh+ afaik.

For the country's #1 cricketer, I dont think splurging on a 3-series BMW is anything worth going hoo-ha over. Getting an auto loan isnt very hard for professionals these days either. Lastly, Brand New cars with engine size of 2L or less have a very minimal marginal tax rate (between 35% and 75%) as per the latest budget. The tax rate is not the 300-400% people think it to be. Heck if you wanted to bring in a brand new car for sale in BD, you dont even have to buy it in its country of manufacture like you do for reconditioned cars in BD.

I have to agree with cluster here. Being in a travlling job I was blessed to drive some of the newest and weirdest modeled vehicles which might not have been the case if my job was local. Yeah why not ask for a jaguar or porsche alternatively .

^^^ ammark those price are almost 3 times high compared to entry level cars in UK. Even top of the range BMW 3 series will cost you arond 40k in pounds which is roughly 41/42 lakh taka in todays currency.
I see all the news about people driving vehicles which not road worthy in Bangladesh. I can see why ,if you overprice to high how can people afford it.

I had a Honda CRV for nearly 5 years( never gave me any trouble), which I sold for 800 pounds (about 90k taka). In January when I was in Bangladesh someone try to sell almost the same spec car to my dad for 5 lakh taka. Why pricess are too high back home?

Just because I can afford one, does not necessarily mean that I'm gonna buy it anytime soon. I can't justify buying a car worth 70Lacs or 1 Crore, not just yet.

A car worth Tk 20 lacs gets me from place A to B in great style amongst the hoards of rickshaws.

If you have the money sure why not. Personally if I was to buy a BMW i'd prefer to get it 3 to 4 years old. My friend recently bought a BMW X5, its 2006 model. Its in great condition, less than 30 K mileage, its in practically brand new. I think it cost him around $30,000. If I do ever end up getting a BMW i'd probably go for something along this line.

I don't know dude. Not many people can afford to buy 100K+ car with a 200K salary here in U.S.A.

sure as you said, it's not a big deal with loans and everything but i don't think it is particularly smart to buy expensive cars like that if your income is in that level (ie 200K)- especially for ppl who would be forced to retire before age 40.

But if you make more money - then its ok - and more power to you.

Personally, I would consider you wealthy if you can easily buy a car above 100K without breaking a sweat. Definition of wealth is widely different for diff ppl..

I agree Mo bhai, I think it is ridiculous that with the money for a 3 series in BD, I could get a 7 series in the West. I was stating it for the facts though. I can only throw some guesses about why the cost of cars are so high: as One World bhai said, Shipping, buyer demand and high taxes for CR-Vs and Toyotas which come reconditioned. However, the biggest reason is probably big huge profit margins by BARVIDA and BADA importers.

Totally. Its not very smart to be spending on these cars at 3x their fair value in the first place. But the moronic thing is that there's plenty of new money to be thrown about in Dhaka city and Chittagong town these days. Tis a sad vain existence in my eyes. However, in comparison to the growing number of 5, 6, 7, E class, S class, and overpriced Audis, a 3 series goes for small change. A Camry costs Tk. 55,00,000 these days!

Ohhh I voted wrongly, I was being too modest and said it would be too expensive for me. But then I thought, technically, I can't even afford my own meal because I am 99.95% financed by my parents. Sad!

Tamim earns 200K? Wow I wouldn't think Australian cricketers earn much more than that.

What's the point of an over-priced luxury car in bangy anyway? It's almost an oxymoron. Who exactly would you show off to? The beggars? You wouldn't even be able to drive it properly or fast on those roads. The ridiculousness of the behaviour of rich people never fails to astound me.

Btw, it's perfectly plausible for someone earning 200K to comfortably buy a 100K car. I'll let you know how it goes for me in 8 years.
